I always greet the seller when I walk up with “good morning, how are you?” it sets up for a friendlier negotiation later.
Never ever say anything disparaging about what they’re selling, it’s theirs until someone buys it, show interest, it gets them on your side and if something’s too high I just say you’ve got a fair price on it but I’m not really willing to spend that much, usually they will give you a better deal.
It all about a friendly non confrontational negotiation.
I’ve shared this before, go to the bank and get as many $2 bills as they have, it’s usually not more than 10-12, I’ve found that $5 items often can be bought for one $2 bill.
The power of the Two is amazing, last night at the auction they had a stack of 22 two dollar bills, not old, the bid went to $57!11/02/2017 at 4:31 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Carhartt coveralls, Utah speakers, Ecco Boots, Marlboro Bag, vintage vacuum, Apple IIe computer. #24854Sales have slowed down since last Thursday (0 sales that day) and continue a little slower than most of October.

I recently acquired a fabric covered HM shell chair with a swivel base for $25 but it looks so good in my house I’m reluctant to sell, maybe I’ll price it at $600 and it’ll be here for awhile.10/31/2017 at 8:19 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24613I’ve never had it happen.
I’m not sure why other than it likely isn’t a widespread practice.
I do price my stuff high and I take very detailed photos so perhaps scammers are less likely to risk the money.10/30/2017 at 2:29 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24582This is kind of a weird area, I can find all sorts of cool mid century stuff, it gets passed over a lot at auctions, and I get it real cheap.
Trying to sell MCM on CL is a bust mostly so all the larger items I’ve found have become part of my home like floor lamps and furniture.
I know there are a few people who are looking for stereos like I do but often I’m the first to inquire.
I’ve become friends with the proprietor of a used vinyl record store who has people bring in the coolest stereo gear and he gets it cheap, he sells it but it’s not a big part of his store and I’ve gotten a few pieces from him. I guess that’s an advantage of a brick and mortar store, people know where you are when they’re ready to sell.I just don’t feel there are as many eBay resellers here, lots of garage sales and antique malls with slow changing inventories so I don’t fear a scavenger swooping in to grab all the good stuff available.

10/30/2017 at 2:09 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24580I’m not finding the garage or house full of stereos like I have in the past lately, just individual components.
It seems every week there are new listings on CL but I’m getting more particular, with the experience now of a few years, I can better judge the equipment and what kind of time I’m willing to put in to get them ready for sale.
As with everything now, I aggressively look for the home run sale of $200 and up.10/30/2017 at 1:42 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24578Oct 22-28 2017 $1470

• Cost of items purchased this week $50Garage sales are still happening, I went to few on Friday, seems better stuff and not as many shoppers in the cooler weather.
I have way too much stuff unlisted to even be considering buying more but with winter just around the corner, pickin’s will soon be slim, I can cram a bit more in without exploding.10/30/2017 at 1:38 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24577I only dumpster dive for packing materials but I’ve found a lot more than that in those iron boxes.
At World Market they throw out expired food and some of its pretty interesting stuff and always good. I once brought home 12 bags of tortilla chips.
At a Pier 1 I found a huge round framed mirror.
I will dig to the bottom of the dumpster at the Ford dealership for the blue plastic backed foam wrap, I use it all the time, best thing I’ve found for shipping fragile items. My new answer to that question will now be, “no, I’m a hoarder”.

Mine are run of the mill cafe menus with nice picturesque scenes but the prices are cool to see.10/26/2017 at 2:12 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Harley gloves, vintage microphone, trucker wallet, vintage Apple monitor, models & trains #24484Update on the Apple monitor.
It arrived with a couple cracks in the case, probably rough handling but also the age may have caused it to be a somewhat brittle.
It was well packaged with an inch or more of styrofoam and a sturdy box around the original box.
After some back and forth messaging the buyer accepted a $200 partial refund and kept it, I wasn’t going to have him ship it back regardless but it just goes to show that a little tactful communication will sometimes pay off. He also provided plenty of photos to document the damage and told me I did a good job packing it, now it’s time to make that dreaded insurance claim.I do, it’s like Bonanza, a few sales every month.
Unlike Bonanza you must purchase postage via Paypal.I’ve received that message. It was after I shipped a $700 Stereo. I contacted the buyer via his Paypal email address as his account didn’t show up anymore and the sale was removed completely from eBay and he confirmed the buy was legitimate on his part but did not mention any suspicious activity reported by him. That was over a month ago and I’ve heard nothing since.
