I think one of the bigger differences between “sales event” and Markdown Manager is that MM doesn’t really promote. Sales Event is essentially MM on steroids, as it actually promotes the markdowned merchandise
A couple thoughts: Yes, his workaround—if that’s what it is—COULD indicate a pattern. BUT maybe not. When eBay first announced the out of stock rule, the ebay boards were filled with posts from people saying things like :” Well, there’s an easy way around this…” So, it’s not as if there’s no advice out there on how to dodge the out of stock defect. Even someone out of stock for the first time could find out how to try to dodge it.
I do agree with ecommerce about a discount rather than a gift. The refund made the buyer whole financially, but it is no comfort to the buyer who spent time finding the item and really wants it (especially for the sort of unusual stuff many of us sell). I think I would use Promotions Manager to issue a coupon code for my store, good for “x” and for a certain duration (especially if I had related items in the store, which might be of interest to the buyer). But of course, doing that would not require shipping something, and that’s the nub of the issue here, isn’t it? Is the seller’s sole motive in shipping a gift, an effort to make up for the buyer’s inconvenience, or is it an effort to dodge the defect?
OK, I see your point….refund was issued BEFORE evidence of delivery.
It IS possible that the seller is NOT trying to dodge the cancel defect, and has sent the gift ONLY as a good will gesture for the buyer….
Vintage jackets and coats sometimes have both a store name and a brand name inside. Could that be the case here? Either way, as jay says, focus on the cashmere and style.
ecommerce,
But that’s my point…it sounds like the Seller did not, strictly speaking, issue a refund from the PayPal transaction. He used the sending money option to send the amount of the refund. Also, since the seller sent AN item, and the transaction shows delivered, even if he issued a refund, it would not be linked to a cancel, since neither the seller nor the buyer actually cancelled…the seller presumably sent the gift item as if were the item itself.01/24/2017 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 294: Finding the Valuable Caches and Going All In #11073Wow, habnab, congrats on the fabric sale! For me, five hundred dollars for three yards of fabric is a lot better than a decent sale…I’d call it great! What sort of fabric was it?
Oh, and the Free Shipping is immaterial. This isn’t about DSRs. It’s about ebay’s rather strict standards for out of stock situations. It doesn’t take many such situations to effect a small seller’s standard.

I don’t think the seller got a defect here. If I understand correctly, seller advised buyer that seller was out of stock (if they did this through something other than ebay messages, ebay won’t evn have a record of that). Seller offers to ship a gift (which, as far as ebay knows, is the item itself). Buyer receives item, ebay views that as a shipped and delivered transaction. Seller then issues a refund through PayPal, NOT as a refund of the transaction, but as a direct PayPal payment to buyer (so that nothing in the payPal transaction indicates that anything other then the correct item was shipped and delivered, and there’s no indication that a refund was made.
As others have noted, the seller has made the buyer whole (refunded the amount) and even sent a gift (which may or may not be appreciated by the buyer). Most buyers are not as savvy as JulieB, who is also a seller and so understands the seller’s dual motives: to make the buyer whole, and to avoid the out of stock demerit from ebay.
I do understand the desire to report the seller to ebay, but I also understand that stuff happens, the seller made it good, and personally, I’d let it go. But that’s up to JulieB, she can try contacting ebay…
Non-TRS sellers do get a discount for using ebay labels. I think it is basically the same, or perhaps slightly more, than what you get for printing USPS labels online through USPS. So printing your labels online is cheaper than buying postage at the counter pretty much no matter what. Also, I want to add , for those TRS sellers who ship internationally, there is still a pretty big difference between the discounts for non TRS and TRS. So, if you do a lot of international shipping, the TRS shipping discount is still a pretty big benefit.
I believe the rates are set by USPS. Several years ago, ebay negotiated with the PO so that ebay sellers using ebay labels would get the Commercial Rate discount, and ebay TRS sellers using the labels would get the Commercial Plus Discount (none of us would be eligible for that discount on our own, we don’t ship nearly enough items individually). Until this recent change, the gap between Commercial and Commercial Plus was pretty large, which made the TRS discount a really nice perk for TRS sellers. The USPS (not ebay) closed that gap considerably with this recent change. That is what we are seeing now.
As Jay says, we are still doing a lot better than if we paid for our postage at the counter. And if you are TRS, you are getting the same rate many much larger sellers get from the PO, which helps the little guy stay competitive, thanks to the deal ebay cut with the PO.
With that many views, I’d also guess these have appeared on a popular blog/website, or in an ebay Collection.
Looks like a poor little lamb, who has lost his way….baaa, baaa, baaa….I’d add an empty bottle of booze in one or two of shots LOL
My desktop is a cardtable for the PC tower and keyboard and cat bed, a small folding table next to that holds my monitor. When I’m working at the computer, my cat is either on the floor near me, in her bed, between me and the keyboard , between me and the monitor, or on me. She is 16 and she likes to be with me.
There are times when it drives me crazy, but I accept the fact that I’d rather have time with her than workplace efficiency. LOL….so to prove all this, she just now got out of her bed and is sitting between me and the keyboard, making this hard to type LOL

I agree with this as well. I know it has been suggested to ebay before, but so far they haven’t acted on the suggestions. Maybe this will be the year!
