The post about the blanket falling apart into shreds had me guffawing…that’s hysterical!
My numbers for the week, which reflect me raising prices significantly. I tried to eliminate sales so that I could focus on scaling up inventory. Spending time packing takes away from the time I can list. I am going to try to make a go of this full time, having lost my job 2 months ago. I don’t necessarily want to take income from the store now though.

This is the store I’ve been trying to build up.It’s hard not to look at those numbers and cringe. There’s an old adage I used to live by when I was on commission sales eons ago, “production cures all woes”. Too true.

12/17/2017 at 11:46 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 338: Rich Scavenger, Poor Scavenger #28946I haven’t had time to read this week’s entire blog response posts to this podcast, but I wanted to respond to something I read that Simplicio touched on. I just listed a bunch yesterday, calculated shipping on all the posts. I found I was able to add local pick up to those listings. So, then I went in and added local pick up to all my listings. You have to make sure that you don’t just override the existing shipping method when you do that, which is what I mistakenly did. It was a quick fix because it’s a second store with less than 500 listings and was easy to fix with the bulk editor. It was not easily achievable, at least at first blush, on my store that uses business rules though. I’ll have to figure out how to edit those rules as opposed to using the bulk editor on those stores. The point of the whole thing is that you don’t have to be limited to using flat rate shipping charges when you want to also add local pick up to the mix. Someone may have already commented on this, in which case, I’m sorry for any duplication of information. Happy Scavenging fellow trash elves!
Take a look at the site, Abe Books. They specialize in antique and collectible books. There may be something to learn there. First editition can be valuable if pristine and preserved in acid free acetate. Good luck
Hi Bob, I’m sorry about the Lions……not really since I’m in Minnesota and we are hoping for a super Super Bowl here. It would be a first for a home team to host the super bowl and be in it….I think.
I’m around your age and have similar ambitions. Recently, this part time eBay hobby has become a full time endeavor/experiment, when I lost my well paying full time job. It’s very different full time than part time I have found. It’s also different doing it alone v. with a partner.
I’m glad you added your voice to the chorus here and hope to learn from you through any contributions you choose to make.
11/12/2017 at 6:59 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 333: The Illusion of Keeping Up With Everything #25492I have 2 stores. One with my husband and one with my eBay friend/partner. I’m just posting the store with my husband’s and my numbers this time around.
10/29/17 – 11/04/17
Total Items In Store: approximately 270
Items Sold: 7
Cost of Items Sold: < $5 (I’m excluding the original cost of the crappy lamp because I used it for a decade)
Total Sales: $136.47 not counting shipping (253.62 – includes shipping – I’m never sure if shipping is supposed to be included or not & I do make some money on shipping usually)
HIghest PrIce Sold: $75 – ugly fake tiffany style urn lamp which I’m ashamed to say I ever owned!
Average PrIce Sold: $19.50 (wow, that’s soooooo low)
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory ThIs Week: $ 20
Number of Items lIsted this week: 30I reached out to ebay via ebay Facebook for business. I can’t copy and paste the response from my phone, but the rep experienced the same thing when making a similar search. She indicated the results are varying, not as a result of capitalization, but based on reindexing of listing based on seller updates to listings. I imagine this has a greater impact on new goods. So, in the end, the rep had no suggestions from either a seller or buyer perspective for a best practice relating to capitalization.
I ship in a flat rate priority envelope, not a padded flat rate. It takes some practice, but if you roll the stuffed side down over the flap, rather than try to press the flap dow, you can do it. I call it, “The Tuck and Roll”. My ebay partner and I always end up in peels of laughter.
If you turn your phone, rotate it, it helps this problem on the viewing side. To some degree.
Not so sure about the enamel idea. Judging from the appearance of the size. That would take a lot of enamel glass and a huge kiln. But I would say it’s painted. Maybe it’s an outsider art piece?
I sourced a 12 cup Mr coffee maker, just a recent model in black, and an early 90s white cuisinart 2 slice toaster still in the box with the sales receipt attached. Nothing special about either one, except they were in fine shape. Both were purchased at the bins for 29 cents a piece. I listed them both on Craigslist, Offer Up, let go, and ebay. They were listed for 20 plus shipping each on ebay, and 25 each on all the local marketplaces. They sold with 2 weeks through let go for a total of $40. At about the same time, i sold a 4 cup mr coffee for 10, also bought for 29 cents, also through offer up. I’ll start picking up these staples going forward for sure. Nice bread and butter.
Because they haven’t programmed the system to accommodate negotiated offers, of any kind, to be instant payment. Don’t know if there is a barrier to that, but it would be nice.
LAwoman, I think they are great results. However, did you increase your prices to offset your cost of advertising? If so, then you’re all goid. If not, then you need to assess whether or not those items would have sold organically on their own. If they have been on your shelf over 2 years, then the promoted listing is well worth it, if they were there only 2 months, then it’s hard to say. When you say it would have helped to know the total promoted number, are you referring to all the other similar items from other sellers?
LAwoman, you can filter on the column for sales, then select the number 1 (or 2, etc) and you will see only the sales. You can email me the report if you wish. Jay could email you my address if he’s not too busy enjoying himself!
