Number of items listed this week: 29The saga of the new homeowners returns. After replacing a whole wall of our basement because of foundation issues, dealing with our well stopping on two different occasions, now our main sewer line has collapsed and they have to dig everything up again. I am starting to wish we were still renters. I don’t make enough on ebay to pay for these issues. All of my inventory, my packing supplies, and photography stations are in the basement, so I’m dealing with some stress and anxiety over just the time and $ to fix the issue. I could probably bring SOME of it upstairs, but there just isn’t the space. The plumbers did a really great job keeping the mess minimal today, so I am really thankful for that. Right now I’m not feeling like I have a whole lot of control. Trying to stay productive, but it has been challenging.

Number of items listed this week: 45I started as a collector. I bought items in big lots, kept what I wanted for my collection and sold the rest to pay for my collecting. Eventually the selling part became more fun than collecting, so now I just sell. 🙂
In my weekly news: I went to my first auction this past weekend. I went to go visit some family and an uncle on the fly invited me to go to the next town over to check out an auction. I just went to observe. They had some interesting items, a lot of what I didn’t know a lot about, and it was pretty busy. It was hard for me to keep track of what was actually going on, but at the same time, the progress seemed excrutiatingly slow. I didn’t know how they were going to get through all the tables of things by the end of the day! I’m so used to going into thrift stores, picking out what I want and then leaving with it.
In an auction it is like they are selling all of the items in the store piece by piece, so you have to wait until your item comes up, and THEN someone else may also want the item, so even if you wait all day for it, you might not get it. I don’t know if I would have the patience for that! I didn’t buy anything…
For others that go to auctions – do you expect to spend the whole day there? Do you have a strategy to make the most of your time?

I have an inventory system in place now, and it is work to keep it up, but I have found that despite this upkeep work it makes my life less stressful. I just fill up a box as I list things, give the box a number then put it on a shelf. I have also have an inventory spreadsheet with the name of each item and the number of the box it is in. I also have a few shelves just for larger bulky items or things I don’t want to stack on top of eachother. For these I just give the shelf itself a number.
I am realizing how slow it is to list things I am unfamiliar with. With vintage toys (my Etsy shop) listing things is a breeze. I am working on specizlizing in shoes for my eBay shop, but I am feeling the learning curve. Picking out key words, figuring out what the sizes are (Is it stamped in UK/US/EU, all, one or none of those), and figuring out what flaws or issues need to be highlighted. The learning process is fun though. 🙂

I love finding caches too! I found an entire collection of Rainbow Brite dolls & all their Sprites at a thrift store one time. So exciting! A few months later the same store had HUNDREDS of troll dolls (these I passed on, at the time, I just had no space for them).
Another year I went to a garage sale where a man was selling his ENTIRE collection of action figures – Thundercats, Ninja Turtles, Masters of the Universe. He had ALL the Ninja Turtle figures from the original line from 1988 to 1993. I bought ALL OF THEM. 🙂 He had them all individually bagged up with their weapons and accessories. WOW. I have never spend so much money at a garage sale before. I have since sold all but two of them, and made lots of profit! Woot! My only regret is that I didn’t buy all the play sets and other things from him. I just didn’t have the space! I am pretty sure he had an ultra rare playset worth about $900 that at the time I knew nothing about… (he gave me a stack of pamphlets/mini comics that went with the action figures and sets, and the comic for that playset was in there). I probably passed up on some major money. D:

My toddler and I went to visit family over the weekend, and got hit by some bad weather at the end – so we stayed for an extra day until the roads were better. One less listing/work day this week, but at least we stayed safe.

Number of items listed this week: 20Last Thursday was my first day as a full-time reseller. I have been a hobby seller on Etsy since 2011 and looking forward to making this full time gig work. Most of the past few days have been spent making an inventory system. I had too many cases over the last year where I looked for an item for over an hour because I couldn’t remember where I put it. Three days of inventory work will be worth saving the frustration down the road, especially when I have a bigger shop down the road.
My goals for 2017:
1. Transition to full-time without burning out / defusing my excitement. My mantra is: this is a marathon, not a sprint.
2. Stop hoarding the good stuff. My deathpiles aren’t made of the low-value stuff I don’t want to list. For me it has been easier to list and sell off the low-value items and keep the ‘jewels’. This ends now.
3. Learn more about shoes.That’s a good idea. 🙂 I have been trying to learn more about shoes, so maybe that will be a focus for a while.
Short answer: Leaving my job was my own decision, and not unexpected. I gave my boss a couple months notice so he could fill the position.
Long answer: Three years ago I had a great job that I loved as a molecular biologist, but my husband and I were living in separate towns while he worked year to year contracts in different places. A couple years ago he found a full-time tenure track position (he is a psychology professor) in a small town and I moved so we could be together again. I worked in the same college, part time as an adjunct biology instructor, but found it wasn’t a great fit for me. I realized that despite its perks (flexibility, working in my field even in a small town) there were quite a few things that I didn’t like about the job. When I worked in the lab I felt like my job was important and clients depended on and appreciated my work. As a part time professor there is a weird relationship between student and teacher. They are your ‘clients’ in a way, but they don’t really want to receive the product (knowledge and experience) you have worked so hard to give them. (It didn’t help that one of the classes I taught was the non-majors biology class… it was like pulling teeth.)
