I listed 22 unique items this week. I really need to push myself a little harder since my day job is super slow. I do have some family obligations and distractions, but this number really should be way higher. I feel like I’m going to look back later and go “the lockdowns was such a good opportunity to move those death piles”, and “why didn’t you get more done?” I did get back to exercising everyday this week and I’m trying to watch what I’m eating.

Cost of Items Sold: $88
Total Sales: $212 Ebay, $136 Mercari

Number of items listed: 22Eventful week on Ebay, but not really saleswise. I got the offer for $50, so registered for managed payments. Couldn’t figure out how to charge shipping labels and fees to my credit card, so will need to look that up.
Then, ouch got my first neutral feedback in three years. The buyer falsely claimed I photocopied $10 vintage canning labels. I asked for a return, no answer, then reported and asked for feedback removal on the site, and poof was removed in less than an hour without calling Ebay overseas. Hooray! I also rejected a lot of lowballers and had several of my counteroffers go off into the wind and expire. Had some success selling off $10-15 vintage on Mercari pretty quickly, so I’m pleased with that. The better stuff goes on Ebay. Say what you want about Mercari but your items get looked at and it’s very transparent so I like that. I’m wondering if people are still spending but it’s going lower dollar. My hourly day job projects seriously dropped off in June. Looking back I’m displeased with myself since I didn’t crank out more listings. It will be strange to have Ebay start paying for our monthly groceries, but I’m super grateful at this time for my “side business”.
Stay safe everyone. Thanks for the podcast and sales videos.
So happy for you Joe that it worked out so well. I’m dreaming of lower bills post retirement…

I never double box things. But, I do use XL bubble wrap for breakables. At least three times around. I start with bunching it up at the handle. However, this approach won’t fit into a 4 x 6 x 6. Smaller ones fit 7 x 7 x 6, oversized in larger box.
I’m going to try this padded flat rate method soon on cheaper mugs that people won’t pay $10+ shipping for cross country. FOMO Mug Ship Video

I have had four packages arrive with postage due this summer, but overall a much better experience than you have it sounds. Not sure if it’s the type of items we are buying or what. In a seller’s forum, it was suggested that some sellers are routinely getting away with shipping underweight so they keep doing it. I think people are maybe less likely to leave bad feedback because of the personal profiles. Anyway, Mercari will send a harsh message (I had to cancel once) and supposedly they kicked off a bunch of sellers who were complaining online. I have had excellent and easy customer service through messaging too – sure beats calling Ebay’s overseas reps. Mercari does absolutely need to add a prompt for sellers about condition issues.
07/06/2020 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 470: How Would You Start Your Business Today? #79171The other simple platforms are drifting Ebay’s way a little bit on the shipping maybe, but still it’s so much faster to create a listing over there with the click buttons and suggestions popping up for fields. Ebay has improved their mobile listing a bit and I hope they continue to do so.
Thanks again T! Yes, I think that’s about right based on pink different shape solds and rose vases of other colors.
VL and Amatino, I echo the wishes for continued healing this week.
I listed 24 items, with 18 unique. My 14 yo daughter would like to run the house, so she lost her screens for a week. I’ve spend some nice time with her but it crimped my listing style. I also feel uneasy I guess subconsciously about things and have not been sleeping that great. I had a couple of lazy days last week. But hoping to tackle more boxes. I did a box of ceramics last week. Thinking of switching over to small art this week or back to fabric.

I keep the larger or longer ones in order by size, flattened in an open box like a filing cabinet but it still seems like a lot. But then when you find one you need, it’s a relief.

* Number of items listed this week: 24Great podcast this week. I’m the one who was asking for opinions about short listing titles since I noticed in Terapeak some short ones had sold highest. I was contemplating balancing the search hits vs. an algorithm boost one might get from a better conversion rate. Of course, we’ll never know about Cassini. I start with a readable string of the most basic and important key words first and then add a bunch of relevant descriptive words and fill up the space. However, I was thinking of dropping some of the latter possibly, especially things like color that would be covered in the item specifics. In theory, I’d get fewer, better hits and improve my conversion rate.
Regarding Poshmark, as a buyer I resent paying over $6 shipping on very lightweight first class items. It’s great for listing but makes me lowball over there. And yes, they might have to change it up like Mercari did if their hard goods business does well or they have other changes.
Good week of sales for me. Lots of distractions from listing last week. I hope to get more listings up this week. I’ve got a lot of piles but I’m a few boxes in now and it feels good. My daughter cleaned out her closet and it’s a lot of stuff. Most not very saleable, but we’ll see if she wants to put some work in.
If I started my business today, I would trust my instincts but search solds more often at the buying end and try to stay above $30 net unless it’s multiples. In my area there is no shortage of inventory so I really blew it in a way picking up some of the stuff I’m now dealing with years later. Also, I would pay more attention to the weight, since postal rates just keep marching up.

My husband on his own just discovered Poshmark last week. (He calls it Posh.) I know for Mercari the prices are lower, and people know the terms so are willing to take a risk. I have bought brands that I already own in a particular size. Both my husband and I found the social side of Posh a bit annoying and he asked me about people following him.
Unfortunately after the last set of USPS price increases, Mercari could no longer sustain their three chunk shipping buttons and now require weight and measurements. I think a lot of casual or shifty sellers are getting it wrong too. I just sent another package back as a buyer that had DIM postage of over $40 due.
