This is my first week of “officially” being an ebay seller. I got my first sale on Saturday, and I couldn’t be happier.
I got laid off of my job on the 9th. I decided it was time to start busting my ass for myself than to keep on busting it for other people, with no payoff. I have so much more to list… but I am also worried I don’t have enough… I realized I have less than I thought. It’s difficult, it’s snowing like crazy and I’m new to the area. I am excited for this coming summer, but hopefully I can pull this off through the winter.
Week Dec 11-17, 2016
Total Items in Store: 75
Items Sold: 1
Cost of Items Sold: $16.58
Total Sales: $16.58Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 68No debt is great. I have a degree, but I also have no debt. I was lucky, of the few things my parents valued, no debt was ingrained in me from a very young age. I have also “rebelled” in a way, as I have quit looking for a “job” and have decided to focus solely on Ebay and Freelance work. It takes a certain type of person to see a system that isn’t working and decide to change it. Props to you, I wish I would have realized at 19.
I’m within your 1-2 hour radius! I just moved up here (Belvidere) a few months ago. I hope to meet you in the future.
It evolves, if I know I can make money on it, I would probably buy it.
Currently my collection is a bit different. Until recently, I haven’t had the time and energy to put into ebay like I have wanted. So my rules for thrifting were pretty strict due to space and the fact that nothing was leaving. I’ve collected “things” over the last 4 years, and even sold a few items on etsy.
I went through a brass stage of collecting but then quickly realized that most of what I was bringing home wasn’t really worth it. I have kept things I personally enjoy and a few of the more odd items.
I love vintage jewelry… most of what I have collected is probably more for personal use but I will always look for jewelry and will be more likely to buy to sell it in the future. (If anyone has pointers or sources for educating, please send it my way)
Clothing, purses/bags, etc – If I like it, it stands out to me, I feel like it doesn’t deserve to be in the thrift store anymore (I feel like I “save” items). I guess I rely more on my sense of taste with this one. Odd and quirky will only make the cut if I “feel”(tangible feeling) quality, I really don’t want sell/buy trash. I have never been too reliant on brand names (again, an education is probably needed in this department). Recently I have been buying t-shirts and coats. Because who can pass up an awesome leather fur trimmed dress coat for only $1?
Paintings, I have made a point up until now to only buy what I want on my walls, a few are going to make it to ebay.
It’s pretty apparent how green I am. I love learning, and I am excited to be here.
This looks similar to the Pizza carrying cases they sell in restaurant supply stores (worked at one for a hot minute)
Thrifty Cast (as stated above)
I enjoy listing to Murder Podcast… Sword and Scale, Last Podcast on the Left, Someone Knows Something, Remarkable Lives, Tragic Deaths(not always murder), Unexplained
History Podcasts. Footnoting History, You Must Remember this, The British History Podcast, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Our Fake History(this one has some awesome music played by a band called Dirty Church),
Some Audio Dramas I have enjoyed: Limetown, Fireside Mystery Theatre, Dark Tome, The Black Tapes
Other: NPR Politics, Ted Talks, Ted Talks Business, Ganjapeneur, Fashion Hags, The simple Sophisticate, Shoe-In,
just to name a few… (I don’t spend very much time with other people)
I am in Belvidere, IL!
need some guidance as I go through these steps. Generally speaking I want my Business to be up and legal by January 1st. I am currently listing items.
1) separate paypal account
I have one paypal account, it is attached my my personal bank account. I have yet to have any sales, is it okay to keep it this way? Should I set up something totally seperate?
2) resellers license
How do I know if my state(IL) needs this?
3) separate bank account
Kind of touch on above. How does this benefit me? Should I speak to my bank about my new business?
4) separate credit card
same as 3
5) Go Daddy bookkeeping account
Is the simple $3.99 a month enough or do you suggest a higher level?
6) accountant/tax preparer
Is there a special type of accountant one should look for online selling/small business? How soon do I need to get one?
For Wool coats, is that any type of soap or do you use wool specific?
I would love to hear/see scavengers favorite tools!

Ashana. Reason: typos
Funny side story… my sister interviewed for one of these “faith-based” alternative healthcare groups. It was going really well until the guy told a graphic story of running over his own kid with a lawnmower. She went through the rest of the interview, even got a call back. The organization had some other issues(super legalistic) as well but I think the main thing was she felt uncomfortable with the person who would have been her boss.
My thoughts were, “that story isn’t a good story to share on a first interview”.
Absolutely! I’m considering a donation page that says “Invest in our future” and listing out some of the dreams we have.
Well after dealing with 2 weddings from siblings I have decided to boycott David’s Bridal and will not be forced to buy a $200 bridesmaid dress when I can give my money to another ebay seller.
I am extremely disgruntled with wedding “services” and the entire play.
I have still not decided if I will wear white but SO has expressed the desire for it to be this color, (which will be difficult as I am super white, but I refuse to buy this new either).
But what I really want to prove is that money doesn’t make an event, relationships do.
People are generally amazed when I tell them I don’t generally spend more than $5 for an article of clothing.
