Greetings!
…. My name is Ian (or iangoldy on Periscope and other forms of internet things) I’m 19 years old and last year I dropped out of college pursuing a degree in Computer Science. All my life I wanted to be a Programmer. But, in todays times getting that degree takes a lot more then good work effort! It takes MONEY!! I was spending $34K a year to attend my school that I wasn’t even rooming at it (BTW Room and Board is more money XD). So, I rebelled against my parents and family who are all college grads and in fact teachers. I didn’t want a life of debt. So I took my small Flea Market and Facebook selling business and went Full Time eBay. I’ve been doing it full time for a year now and couldn’t be more surprised with the results. I love the lifestyle and the hunt! I mostly sell Retro video games, Electronics, and Geeky toys/collectibles. Love the Podcast and hope to connect more with you guys.

Welcome Ian. There’s definitely different ways to educate yourself beyond the traditional expensive university route, as long as you’re always learning. Computer Science (aka programming) is one of those skills that can be learned by just doing it yourself.
Feel free to join us each week in posting your weekly numbers. Helps show progress.
Here’s an interview with Ian in case anyone is interested:

Hi Ian,
So true about being a self-taught programmer. I have worked in IT and as a Web Developer since the late 90’s. I only attended classes on and off, and only when my employers paid for it 🙂
I learned on my own just by following my own interests. Right now I am working my way through FreeCodeCamp.com. It’s a great community as well. They post coding sessions on Twitch and they have Gitter IM. Check it out if you’re interested.
Congrats on your business and Thank you for sharing your story.

Good for you Ian. Wow, that’s a lotta debt! I totally get where you are coming from, my degree is costing me about 10,000 per year after grants and I’ve got one more year where I can just use my grant money and no loans and one more year where another 10,000 will be borrowed… and I’m biting my nails over that!!!
I am pushing 47 years old… the most important conclusion about life that I’ve come up with is that everyone needs to follow the track THEY CHOOSE FOR THEMSELVES, if you see that this track is working for you, it is the right track. No track, now that’s a concern!
I hope your family is supportive enough?!?

No debt is great. I have a degree, but I also have no debt. I was lucky, of the few things my parents valued, no debt was ingrained in me from a very young age. I have also “rebelled” in a way, as I have quit looking for a “job” and have decided to focus solely on Ebay and Freelance work. It takes a certain type of person to see a system that isn’t working and decide to change it. Props to you, I wish I would have realized at 19.

I really enjoyed your interview. I can’t imagine being that self aware and goal oriented at your age. You have many years to explore. It’s ridiculous that kids at 18 are asked to choose what they want to do for 50 years and pay thousands of dollars to achieve that. College isn’t really an exploration of different paths in life at least it wasn’t for me.
