Agree with Retro. While that is a really good haul of stuff, is it worth $6,500? While some of those board games are good, a lot of them don’t go for much on Ebay. I also can’t tell if that much is hiding underneath the table/to the side, or if that’s it.
Oh, I see the additional items now. Can’t really tell what’s in that mess. I do see some McDonald’s toys, meh. For $6,500, I’d want to poke in every box and crevice to see what’s there before deciding.

My high-end isn’t moving at all, my at the bottom low-end is moving briskly. While I continue to stock for both ends, I now have forced myself to develop an eye for the sort of stock that will do well on the low-end. Of course this isn’t ideal, but in order to fund the purchasing of better items, have cash-flow, pay bills, etc,. I need to put my money where it can actually generate sales. If it was a perfect world, I would just source only for the high-end, but the long-tail has gotten very long for those sort of items (at least for me).
12% of unlisted items. So you’ve sold the majority of items that you purchased in 2017 already? Having only 12% remaining in stock sounds really good!
I guess you could check prices on the stock that remains and see if they’re worth keeping in stock, maybe adjust prices if that would help at all (sometimes changing the price does nothing to help). Check to see if any of the items have sold recently? If they’re undesirable and sell for a low price, get rid of them because you have made your money back. If they’re desirable and just take longer to sell, it’s worth holding onto them. If they’re desirable but are not worth as much as you have them listed for and are not worth the cost of keeping them, either sell them to break even or just donate them.
I sold an item today for $20 that I’ve had listed on Ebay since 2011 and takes up very little space. For me, it was worth hanging onto that long. For others? I don’t know.
It’s more psychological than anything. Even though normal people know that the economy isn’t right, seeing the FED indicate what we already know is still not good.
The DOW fell more than 300 points as soon as the decision was announced, which actually surprised me because it has been apparent that they would drop interest rates at either meeting this month. Usually they price in announcements like this.
I just finished paying off a $10k Paypal Working Capital Loan TODAY for my outside projects. It was paid off at least 3 months early, took way less than a year to pay off (part of the reason I have been listing like mad these past few weeks). I don’t know how the loan system will work under the new managed payments system, so I’m going to get out another loan just in case so I can continue utilizing it for those projects. Might be my last chance for a loan via working capital. 🙁
A lot of sellers are just treading water in a good economy, so it will be rough when the recession truly hits. Recessions are also the best time to buy stock, so it could work out if you can both sell less and have enough money to buy for when it gets “good” again. I’ve been buying A LOT of stock these past few months and I’m not even actively buying the way I used to at the moment. Definitely feels like we’re in the midst of it. GDP only increased 2.1% last quarter. I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers are revised down at some point in the future.
Still interested to see how RA/FBA goes. FBA wasn’t around in 2008. How much will people value having brand new items delivered as a “convenience” vs. going to the store themselves and paying half the price?
180 items listed on Ebay this week! Making very good progress with the backlog now. I’ve realized that 2 shelving units I have with unlisted stock contain the equivalent of 15 bankers boxes of items in them. So, I’ve been correcting the problem and making them the focus of my listing for the past few days. I’ve already listed 3 equivalent boxes of stock from them, all acquired from 2014-last month. There was 1 item mixed in I think I purchased from 2012. Oh, well. It’s listed now.
Listening to the podcast now. I don’t understand getting rid of items after 60 days? What? I sold an item last week that was listed in 2005 (not on Ebay). Stock will sell when it sells, unless it is legit junk that just needs to be culled.
I’ve been working really hard listing on Ebay to help offset the costs of other projects. That being said, my goal for the next several weeks is to get 50-100 items listed per week. This July has actually been pretty good for Ebay sales – 30-35% up from last year, even though inventory levels are up. It could’ve been worse – more inventory, while sales remain the same year over year. I pretty much took most of July off from sourcing, but I’ve started again in the past week to have good stock in for the upcoming holiday season.
In-N-Out burgers are overrated. If it was a limited edition Shake Shack burger (like the GOT burger), someone might’ve eaten it.
I don’t have a car or know how to drive, but I do have a porch, so it’s easier for me to just purchase items from these websites. Some items are cheaper on Walmart, some on Amazon. The closest Walmart is across the state line, so I can’t just get up & go as public transit doesn’t even run out to those locations outside of rush hour. An Uber across the state line would run like $30-40, even though it’s only a few miles away and would probably only be a 20-25 minute drive. Even the Whole Foods I get groceries from on Amazon is across the state line, but it’s “free” delivery and everything arrives fresh, so it works. The closest Whole Foods by public transportation is around 30-45 minutes away, depending on transportation at the time of day. The closest Trader Joe’s is also around 40 minutes away by public transportation, 20 minutes by Uber, so it’s cheaper for me to “shop” at Whole Foods outside of cheaper grocery delivery that I do every few weeks from a normal grocery store that charges a delivery fee and has an $80-100 minimum, ugh.
Living in a city is sort of a PITA because while things should be more convenient, in actuality it’s not because of the length of travel, the crowds, the ability to carry things back via public transportation or Uber, etc,. It’s just easier to have other people do the work of delivering stuff. When you can find stuff in local drug or grocery stores, the prices are usually higher than ordering online anyway.
Oh great, this is still useless for most sellers. I am not top rated and will never be because I refuse to do same day or 1 day shipping. I also offer 30 day returns, which I think is more than fair. Free returns just encourage people to rent items. No thanks. Hopefully Paypal and adyen will continue to enforce true seller protections against fraud.
Just placed an order on Walmart that had an “order in the next 3 hours to get next day delivery!” banner on top. It’s 5 pm here. I could order until 8 pm and get what I need the next day. That’s better than Amazon, which usually gives you until noon to get an item the next day.
One of the best parts of having an Amazon subscription is getting Whole Foods delivery within 2 hours! Delivery is free over $35. Just have to tip. Much better than Instacart.
I wonder if Ebay will require a minimum purchase amount for free 1-3 day shipping, or set up a membership fee program like FBA? If they do start a membership, will they throw in perks like prime video or Whole Foods? If so, they’ll need to start buying other companies. Will they be developing their own tv shows? hahaha.
This is going to fail so badly. Amazon is still losing money due to the constant need to build warehouses, reduce shipping rates to 1 day and same day in order to compete with Walmart, figure out how many items should be stored in their warehouses or be disposed of, etc,.
How will they deal with fakes? Will whole sections be gated like Nike? Toys restricted? This is going to be such a disaster.
Ebay does not have the capability of taking on either Amazon or Walmart, period. What they really need to do is emphasize the uniqueness of their auctions, not take on fixed-price merchants that are YEARS ahead of them in the game.
it’s a book on reselling! “almasty profits: the collected notes and recollections on the hustle from the inside of my car.”
just kidding! i can’t imagine anything more depressing to do.
it’s actually just a fiction book conjoined with phenomenology. if you guys are for some reason still interested, i’ll figure out some way to post the info here without doxxing myself too badly.
I listed 150 items out of my backlog last week! Yeah!
I’ve been trying to get 10-30 items listed a day, depending on what projects I have lined up for the day. Very pleased I was able to average out to 25 a day. I also skipped an estate sale on Saturday due to the heat and just rearranged my office and listed a ton of stuff. Nearly 50 new items were listed that day. It was nice to not source at all last week and just work on what I already have. I’ll try to do the same again this week, because it’s nice listing through a pile of items you remember acquiring years ago.
I also had my first book published last week, so it’s nice to finally get that out of the way. I’m embarrassed to say the number of times I refreshed Amazon to watch the sales rank on the first couple of days! Launch went better than expected, so I’m pleased overall.
This week, I plan to work on 3 or 4 different listing projects. One of them is the upcoming Holiday Season – I’ve got to start listing more Halloween and Christmas items now, since I’ve been starting to sell a bit of both over the past few weeks. I guess a combination of the heat & back-to-school spam is getting people to think of the cooler months ahead.
07/16/2019 at 1:45 pm in reply to: Ebay: Please make sold listings show the ACTUAL sale price. #65016The easiest way to extrapolate an actual sales price is by going from low to high or high to low in sold results, if it is possible to do so. There will be some items mixed in that sold for the actual price they are listed for. You just have to sort of estimate at that point what an item actually sold for.
I do agree that it’s annoying and wish they would show actual results as well. I also find it annoying that if an item sells with a private offer to buyer, it will still show it as the item selling for its full asking price. So, even if an item appears to have sold for full asking price, it can sometimes not actually sell for its full asking price, so you have to keep that additional layer of possible sold prices in mind while estimating the actual sale price of an item. Just ridiculous.
“Peace & Love” PFFFT. Never trust anyone that signs a nasty message with an ending like that! So condescending.
I went through speech therapy in elementary school for a couple of years in the 80s for an unrelated speech issue. What people don’t realize is how traumatizing it is to be brought out of a class IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL for just a speech issue. You feel like something is very wrong with you, because your classmates are still in class like normal, while you have to go see a speech therapist because you can’t say certain things right. Like, that’s it, that’s all that’s wrong with me? You have to waste class time to be able to say things more correctly? Why is this a big deal?
I found it to be a big waste of time, because I STILL sometimes can’t say those style of words correctly. Now, when I do mess up those words, I just remember having to be yanked out of class when I was young and how nothing has really changed other than me thinking that something is wrong with me. It’s not like going to speech therapy actually really helps. Does it actually help anyone? I don’t know. Blah.
