Actually, I had spoken about this woman I was completely unaware of prior to this in 1 post. That was all I had intended to do. However, it was the criticism of me criticizing her that caused me to respond. So now I am being criticized yet again for just responding? Okay, cool.
To be honest, my initial criticism of these sort of people was as muted and positive as it could be.
Lets say I’m a potential course customer of a reseller that is selling courses. Oh good, I found a “testing” store of theirs. The first thing I would look at is their listing style. How do they describe their clothing? What would I learn in their course? Good? What does that mean? “Good” could mean anything. Why isn’t it more descriptive? Am I going to spend $20 a month to learn how to describe clothing as “good?” What am I learning to do that I just can’t emulate myself after looking for 1 minute at the testing store?
It is completely different to compare sellers that have “testing” stores up in order for you to buy their courses or eat lunch with them vs. resellers that seek no financial gain from what they are doing.
Also, this thread was intentionally posted in the “random thoughts” “brain dump” section of the forum.
Okay, this is a fun one. Just found her ebay store/youtube/webpage by googling that information. What is a “teaching” store? What does that even mean?

I opened a random listing and under condition notes:

Uhhh…what does that mean for clothing??
Good preowned condition – no defects
That is as generic as most book descriptions out there. For clothing, I want more detail! Good can run the spectrum from clearly worn to just out of the department store.

Do people really need that level of instruction to sell on Ebay? Is it really that hard? Oh my god.

We bought 4 or 5 boxes from them, and figured out they were scamming with these boxes. We’d been tracking the profits on these boxes after actually selling each piece which came out to NEGATIVE 20% Gain. We’re never buying from them again. It’s a shame they are abusing their popularity to sell terrible mystery boxes. I’ve bought from plenty of smaller sellers and hit 50-75% profit margins.
I know they delete their sales on their main Ebay store, but you can still see what they’re selling based on their feedback. If they are selling items for $10-30 apiece on Ebay, why do people think they’re going to get much more valuable items in mystery or reseller boxes? Wouldn’t the more valuable items into their Ebay store?
The mystery box fad is getting out of control. There are even a ton of mystery box book lots on Ebay. Not the subject mystery books, but “mystery box of books.” I don’t know who’s buying those, either.

I indicated that I ship to Canada and Mexico back in January by:
Sign in to your eBay account and click on My eBay.
Click the Account tab, and then click Site Preferences.
In the Selling Preferences section, Postage and packaging preferences and then click the Show link.
Click the Edit link next to Exclude shipping locations from your listings.
THEN, when I list items I always leave the “Ship in the Global Shipping Program” checkbox checked. I also went back in and bulk edited all of my items to be in the program.
That is the life! So jealous.
It was mainly packages going out in late March-mid-April. It seems to be getting better now – still delays, but not 2+ month delays. Had media mail packages from 4 hours away take 1-1.5 weeks to get to me. From Texas, 3+ weeks past the expected delivery date.
I moved all of my Ebay listings to Global Shipping Program for international shipping in January of this year. So glad I made that decision! Well, I’ll still ship directly to Mexico and Canada, but that’s no big deal. From what I can tell the Global shipping orders have been fine – I haven’t been contacted by any customers that purchased items through that program.
However, I’m still shipping directly worldwide with my other selling venues. There are definitely major problems happening – some countries are currently not allowing shipments at all from the US, but you won’t know it until you get an order in and try to buy shipping to that country. It’s really annoying that these sites are still allowing customers to order.
Some shipments are not being updated once they leave the US at all. They are still expecting items to arrive within a month or less. I’ve had media mail shipments take 2+ months to arrive to the customer during this pandemic. I can only imagine international delivery times will be comparable, if not longer. Unfortunately, no one has patience anymore and they assume you never shipped the item and are scamming them even with tracking showing that it left the US.

I wonder if the same is going on for reselling? Interesting discussion on the podcast and in the forum on how people are bidding up items to near retail – new or desperate resellers or bored customers? A lot of new resellers are also wasting their money on mystery boxes – another questionable thing that has me scratching my head. The youtube gurus with their courses and mystery boxes are making a mint now off unsuspecting newer resellers that were recently fired from their jobs or stuck at home for months with no sources of replenishable inventory. Of course they’re all going out and desperate to get what they can get after being stuck at home for months on end. Another reason why when things open up back here I’m just going to stay put – I don’t want to get in the middle of expectant resellers and just plain ol’ stuff.
140 items shipped out last week. 45 items went out today. It’s still busy, but not crazy busy like it was even a few weeks ago. I’m happy with the current level of sales, as it’s overall still busier than last year during this same time period.
The “slow down” in sales has given me an opportunity to get back into listing. I’ve been trying to list both new items and items from the backlog each day. I’m currently trying to list 20 items a day in order to keep up momentum and start refilling the holes in the listed inventory. I’m also not allowing myself to bypass listing items that aren’t interesting to me – if I want to get them out of my immediate “listing from” area, they either have to be actually listed if worth it, or put in a donation pile if they are not. It has been nice to spend more time actually researching items and putting in the work to get them listed rather than just continually putting it off.
I’ve been curious to see how sourcing is going around the country, so I’ve been watching youtube videos of resellers going to garage sales as I pack. A few weeks ago, people were wearing masks and gloves and keeping their distance from each other. As recently as this past weekend, maybe half or less of both the garage sale holders and the customers were wearing protective gear or keeping their distance from each other. It’s such an odd time right now and I just can’t believe many people don’t seem to care about what’s going on.
I suspect thrifts won’t open up again here until early or mid-July. When they do, I can only imagine how much pent up demand there will be from resellers and people who have been bored at home to shop at them. My feelings on going to them are still the same as they were in March – I’ll pass. With the first phase of reopening happening today, we should have numbers in a few weeks to show how safe it really is to venture outside again. That will give me a good indicator on whether it will be safe to start shopping outside again in late summer/early fall. Otherwise, it’s just not worth it. The backlog will keep me occupied.
This recession/pandemic really can’t be compared to 2008 at all – it was a good time to buy stock back back in 2008 with much cheaper prices for items. Now? There’s a lot of competition and items are priced much higher. I don’t know if there are a lot of new resellers out there trying to buy stock, or if there are a lot of bored people at home with nothing to do driving up the prices. In terms of sales, the slow-down in March emulated the 2008 reselling slowdown that I experienced. It felt more like 2008. April & May were an extended holiday season. June is back to a busy normal. Yep. People are angry and frustrated over the way the world is right now and are taking it out on us sellers through feedback and messages. Reminds me of working low paying jobs that involved with dealing with customers in person. You should be able to get the feedback removed since it was a product review. I had a neutral removed a week ago that stated the buyer had no idea the book would be so small, even though I had listed both the measurements and page count for it. I just filled in the removal request form and it was removed a few hours later. Sounds like a good cd haul. I’d suggest looking up the artists on discogs as well, if you haven’t already. The cds might have pages and items listed in the marketplace. The marketplace also offers a sold (low, high and last) history.

Thredup seems to be used multiple ways by clothing resellers – some go to the Goodwill Outlet and send their items to Thredup instead of listing the items themselves on poshmark or ebay. Others buy resell boxes of stock from thredup to list on ebay or poshmark. I’ve also seen some resellers buy on thredup and send the items back to thredup to resell.
I’ve got some clothes I’ve been meaning to list since January but keep on putting off because I don’t want to deal with the possibility of returns. I’m just going to sell them on thredup at this point – they send a free bag and shipping label so you don’t even have to pay to send your clothing to them. They take care of all of the photography, listing, customer service and shipping. Pretty great for people like me who aren’t clothing resellers but also don’t want to just donate these items to a thrift store.
