Thanks. In that case, I feel like Ebay needs to make an effort to act like an actual company and come out with an official date for when everyone will have to migrate to Managed Payments. We all know it’s going to happen in the next year. Just tell us when.
A lot of us have epic Paypal Working Capital loans that we will need to discuss with Paypal how we will pay going forward. We cannot just be thrust into Managed Payments at a whim.
How was such an unprofessional email approved to be sent out to nearly everyone in the first place? It doesn’t make any sense. You’d think there would be levels of approval it would have to go through before being sent out to sellers/customers, including hopefully some proofreaders.
09/13/2019 at 9:25 am in reply to: FYI: Managed Payments – eBay gave our store a deadline to join 22OCT19 #67755I didn’t receive the original email or the follow-up apology one. Does anyone know when we’ll all be absolutely forced into Managed Payments? By January 1st, or later next year?
Just pretty simple meals ordered when we go out for 2 people. Usually 1 app, 2 entrees, sometimes we share a soda. No desserts, no alcoholic drinks. Some restaurants during lunch have prix fixe options for cheap, so even easier to tab up a bill.
Yeah, ephemera is great to sell with free shipping. It can get a bit pricy if it’s slightly heavier than normal and going across the country (or to Hawaii!), but it’s worth it for most orders. If you have multiple items selling to 1 person, you can also make something off the “combined shipping.” Love free shipping.
Depending on how rare or quirky the item is, you might also want to try running some on auction. While most items get no bids or just 1 bid, you’d be surprised by the attention some odd items can get.
Listening to the podcast now. My husband has always done that when we eat out! When they ask if you want dessert or more water or anything else, politely say no, ask for the check, then just give them your card and have them process it right when you’re finishing up. 99% of the time when you’re reading over the check, nothing will be wrong with it and it’s fine to sign and tip. It’s rare for there to be something wrong on the check, and the time you save from just sitting is worth it to sort of hurry it up.
I’m back to sourcing each week, but still not up to full-speed and don’t know if I really want to be before next spring. I had the chance to go out to 4 separate places to get inventory on Saturday, but instead just stayed in and listed from the backlog. Still sourcing more online than in stores, though I would like to start shopping irl 2x per week until it gets too cold to go out much in late December/early January.
Speaking of time saving, here’s a suggestion for those in an urban area: if you’re in a city that has grocery delivery, DO IT. ESPECIALLY do it if you don’t have a car. The amount of time you save driving to the store, walking around, picking up items, picking up extra junk you don’t need because it’s there or on sale, standing on line, driving home can all be eliminated by just ordering groceries online. I took most of yesterday off, but in the early morning I had to wait around for groceries to be delivered. I took the time to work on packing up Ebay orders, pricing items, etc,. that I didn’t have when I was gone for the rest of the day. The groceries came at the end of the delivery window, so I actually had time to price around 40 items. Today has been hectic, so instead of pricing items, I can go straight into listing them when I have time. Thanks, grocery delivery!
In terms of backlog, I still have the box fort next to my desk. I’ve listed 2.5 boxes of backlog over the past week, so at least progress is being made! Trying to list as much new stock coming in as I can as well, but it’s getting delayed. For my own sanity, I’m going to stretch out what I consider “new stock” and “backlog.” Everything purchased from the summer of 2018-now is considered “new stock.” Everything older is from the backlog. I was happy to find a pile of items from 2011-2012 that were good. Still not tossing much older stock other than for condition issues. I’m actually tossing more of the newer stock than the old, oddly enough.
I also need to get back to moving my inventory into the new shelving units. Some large items have sold out of the shelves since I started working on them, but I’ve been refilling them with new stock instead of old stock. Agh. Maybe I’ll get a box or two done today to get back into that drudge work.

Are you able to pay your ebay fees daily in managed payments?
After the middle of the month when the subscription & accumulated 2 weeks worth of fees come out, I pay new fvf or listing fees daily (sometimes more). I like being on top of fees as much as possible so I know how much I have to play with when it comes to savings/buying ebay stock (trying to use just money in paypal to buy new stock), money to cover new fees/etc,. That would be really annoying to just pay it all once a month.
Now you can access Terapeak, an eBay insights tool, in Seller Hub
Terapeak, an exclusive eBay insights tool, is now available in Seller Hub under the “Research” tab, previously called the “Growth” tab. Terapeak uses recent eBay supply, demand, and pricing data to help you determine what to sell, when to sell it, and at what price.Terapeak features are being implemented in Seller Hub so you will no longer need to leave eBay.com to use the tool. Over time, all Terapeak research functionality will be integrated into Seller Hub, along with new insights tools and features, and Terapeak.com will no longer be available. We will alert you in advance of the change. In the interim, you can still access Terapeak.com. We encourage you to use Terapeak in Seller Hub before the change.
No outright fee increases, other than “Increased visibility for Promoted Listings in search results.” I’ll continue to have 0% of my listings with 0% promotions and see how it goes.
What I have found to be really annoying is searching for items by low—>high price. Sponsored listings mixed in will be 5x or 6x the amount of the lowest items I’m looking at, temporarily startling me every time until I realize they’re promoted listings and not some huge gap from 1 or 2 cheaper listings to a much higher price. I can only imagine how much they annoy buyers.
That’s sort of cool they’re integrating Terapeak in with Ebay, but I wish they would create a separate app for it. I just tried to look up an item on Terapeak in Ebay and it took a little longer than the separate Terapeak website. Hopefully it will get more speedy eventually. I only just realized the other day that WorthPoint has its own app and it pulls up results much faster. I’ve just been using the web version for years.
09/02/2019 at 4:42 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 426: Our Financial Lives Are Tied To The Mysterious Whims Of A Website #67275After 6+ weeks of no thrifting, I went thrifting twice this past week! It was amazing, but tiring, but amazing! Going again tomorrow. :). I have been sourcing a lot online, but it’s not the same as going out there and digging through stuff. I mainly stopped sourcing due to the heat and because I’ve been working hard on other ventures outside of reselling.
I’m still working through my backlog. I’ve created a fort next to my desk with 4 bankers boxes of stock. One box has already been completely refilled, the other 3 haven’t been touched yet. Once I am through the refilled box again, I will try to list the other 3 boxes as quickly as possible. I have also started to price out items as soon as they come in, so I go through shifts of what can be listed. I am excited that some of the backlog is being sold within a few days of it being listed. Only a few items have had to be tossed out so far from this latest round of listing, mainly for condition issues.
I got rid of my Poshmark account yesterday. Since I have been buying new clothes in stores, I don’t feel the need to purchase used clothes for myself for more than they would be new. Plus, the shipping is not good as a buyer. I have also been buying more vintage clothing for myself on Ebay & Etsy, and Poshmark can’t compare. There were only 3 items left in my Poshmark closet. I’ll either donate them or wear them. No biggie.
If I put you on block, it was for a reason. No, I don’t want to deal with you again.
“hey my name ***** ***** at ****** I was trying to purchase this item but it want let me could you please take the blocked off me if I did something wrong in the past I apologize I was new and I did not understand it”
Yeah, the original gurus that started this discussion make barely any money from actually thrifting when you look at their Ebay store. I don’t know if they put their vintage and pre-owned finds on a different Ebay store, but for their main store they link to they sell maybe 5-10 vintage items a month, if even that much. I guess at this point they could be selling the bulk of their thrifted finds directly to their mentoring students, but I don’t know if thrift finds were ever a substantial component of their business to begin with. They’re just sort of riding on the coattails of others that do make their living thrifting in terms of appealing to their students.
Also, sooooo much of that sort of stuff you can buy is broken and requires extensive testing. You have to be a wiz at fixing stuff that has been long discontinued.
The worst are the people that try to sell items as “working, used” on Ebay when there’s no way the item they are selling could possibly work because it’s missing pieces or the software for the machines is corrupt! The only way you’d know it’s missing pieces or janky internally is if you are involved in that field and have used the machine before, or are really good about tracking down manuals and looking at every single piece and know how to test the software, or whatever is needed to make sure the machine works. Also, for the items that do need software and it’s not working in that way, good luck on either tracking down the software or even knowing how to replace the software on a machine from 20+ years ago if you do by miracle have the software.
I feel like a lot of business/industrial type sellers on Ebay are already sort of fraudulent, tbh, and people like this encouraging any sort of seller to come in and sell these sort of products better really better be schooling these people on the extensive amount of work you need to test industrial products at the very least.
I actually like that the sites are collecting and remitting sales tax for all of us small sellers. I wouldn’t mind if they kept it like this. As long as they handle it, I don’t mind buyers having to pay up in taxes for what they buy online. This current system seems like a win for the states, and a win for us for not having to deal with collecting the tax.
Just played a few seconds of one of their videos. Why does the guy sound like he’s shouting while talking normally? So weird.
