Okay, I figured it out. It is a drop-in gelatin filter holder. Some Nikon lenses have a slot at the back of the lens next to the camera body to hold this. Some lens designs will not accommodate a filter ring at the front. Only worth about $15 on eBay.

02/01/2017 at 6:13 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 295: The Challenges of Changing Your Strategy #11558Numbers for end of January
Total Items in Store: 701 (688 last month)
Items Sold: 47 (53 last month)
Total Sales: $895 ($1,603 last month)
Cost of Items Sold: $135 ($163 last month)
Highest Price Sold: Dial Telephone $39.45 / 5 PBR Beer Patches $44.75
Average Price Sold: $19.04 ($30.24 last month)
International Sales: 2 GSP
Number of items listed: 61 (49 last month)
Spent on new inventory: $329.70 ($0 last month)
Returns: 1 (low value, just refunded and let them keep it)I had one lost “in inventory” item in January. I found an eBay seller with the same item that was willing to drop ship it to my customer. Hopefully this will keep me from receiving a defect.
I spent a lot on new inventory. $160 was at a family run estate sale, prices were either too high or under priced. I have already sold two of the $1 items for $45.
I spent about $140 at the annual Oakland Museum White Elephant preview sale. Way too much stuff to pick through, but I did get a large lot of topo maps for 25¢ each. Here is a link to some of the photos of the sale: Imgur Link.
For anybody near the S.F. Bay Area, the regular sale is in March, but if you donate something in February you will receive a pass that will let you in to buy stuff on certain days before the big sale in March, kind of like a mini preview sale. I think they said Wednesday through Saturday, 10am-3pm or something along those lines.

01/02/2017 at 8:55 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 290: Experimenting with your eBay Store #9430I just got around to listening the pod cast about the returned counterfeit bracelet. If it ever happens again or to anybody else, first file a fraud case with your local postmaster and police. They will not do anything, but when you contact eBay and PayPal, give them the case numbers. I had a friend that had this problem and they said with the case numbers the eBay rep closed the case in their favor.

If you use packing peanuts you should hit up local health food stores that sell supplements and vitamins. One store I go to has large garbage bags full of these that they are always wanting to get rid of. Almost all of the vitamins they received come in small to medium boxes with lots of peanuts, both the water degradable type and the styrofoam type. If I hit them up on the right day, they also give me lots of small boxes. Of course, as mentioned before on this wonderful forum, large chain stores always are restocking and have carts of empty boxes available for the asking. Also, make sure to use your eBay store coupon, I forgot 1 quarter and lost $50 in free shipping supplies.

Twice this month I reached 700 items listed, but each time sales picked up and now I’m 12 items short of that goal. For the fun of it, I have included some numbers for the whole year of 2016.
Numbers for end of December
Total Items in Store: 688 (671 last month / 542 on Jan 1, 2016)
Items Sold: 53 (51 last month / 605 in 2016)
Total Sales: $1,603 ($933 last month / $12,092 in 2016)
Cost of Items Sold: $163 ($116 last month / $1,916 in 2016)
Highest Price Sold: 3 memory cards: $475, Avirex Jacket: $150

International Sales: 2 GSP
Number of items listed: 49 (37 last month)

Returns: 0Years ago I would buy old computers for gold scrap. I would save the old core memory cards just because I thought they looked cool. I sold 3 in December, 2 at my asking price via GSP to France:
I purchased this Avirex Leather jacket at a yard sale for $20, I had it listed for $225 but accepted a best offer of $150:
A while back I went to the Coliseum Swap Meet in Oakland, CA, I only found one vendor with items I wanted, I bought the lot for $32.

I took a best offer of $100 for the Pocket Barometer, the other items are all listed.
I hope everybody had a great Christmas and New Years – and has great sales in 2017.

Paul, That is fantastic for the rave fliers. In the 1990s I visited the record stores on Telegraph Avenue near U.C. Berkeley almost weekly. I would mainly grab the punk show fliers, but along with those I grabbed gobs of rave fliers also. I probably have about 2-3 bankers boxes full of them. If you are willing to share, how did you come up with a price for them, and about how large was the lot?

12/13/2016 at 8:24 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 288: The War Of Attrition Will Not Grind Us Down #8076Most of my items I charged shipping on. I normally have flat rate shipping except for the larger items that I send FedEx SmartPost. When I research an item, if there are more than 5-8 listed on eBay, then I will bump up the price and use free shipping so it shows up higher in the search results. I sell mostly vintage non clothing items.

11/19/2016 at 10:34 pm in reply to: What is the best or weirdest thing you have found inside an item you sourced? #6151I found 3 1970s $20 Bank of America Travelers checks once. They were only signed once also, but when I took them to the bank, they had no problem cashing them for me. I do not know if it was because of their age or not. So if you do get older checks, try cashing them in – it may be worth it.

The Paper weight I had purchase recently at an antique store in Kalama, Washington for $4, it sold GSP to Canada: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191991835971.
I sold a mixed lot of beads that I almost donated, but they went for $20: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191865901821.
An African Woven Sisal Kiondo Basket Purse I got for free from a pile of leftovers at a flea market went for $28.95 (free shipping): http://www.ebay.com/itm/201651544343.
And a Missouri Pacific Lines Railroad Plate I had sold for $34.95. These normally go for a lot more, but this one had areas of surface loss, but it still sold pretty fast, so my price might of been low: http://www.ebay.com/itm/201693150940.
