01/06/2020 at 10:26 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 444: Is Cross Posting The New Reality? #72546
I do not cross post between my Etsy and eBay stores. I might be looking at moving some of my eBay inventory over to Etsy just because I’m annoyed with eBay at the moment. I don’t know if I should look into the cross-listing software or not. I would move the listing over and then delete the old one. That will be something for me to think about in the next few weeks.
Week of Dec 29 – Jan 4
* Total Items in Store: 1507 eBay, 34 Etsy

* Cost of Items Sold: $39.50 + $15.80 Commission
* Total Sales: $481.34 eBay, 17.75 Etsy
* Highest Price Sold: $84 Vintage Starrett Inside Micrometer
* Average Price Sold: $21.70

* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 0My sales often pickup after Christmas. People are getting what they really want, or they are spending their eBay gift cards.
As I mentioned in the other thread, I’m slowing down and focusing on other things for a while, so I won’t be listing much in the beginning of this year.
I listed 0.
I’m always up for this challenge; however, my goals are changing somewhat this year. This will make it harder for me to compete since I will most likely be listing less.
I made a few mistakes last year because I had misplaced an item or found a defect I hadn’t noticed before. The mistakes were made because I was flying through photography and listing and didn’t spend the time to get it right. I ended up losing my top rated status, and I need to get it back.
While I did raise my average selling price last year, I think it is not enough. I need to slow down and be more careful with what I buy. When listing, I place priority on easy items rather than ones that need to be tested or repaired, but have higher value. In general, I need to catch up with my inventory (deathpiles) and slow down on purchasing.
I’m also considering another source of income which would reduce my time spent on eBay. That may or may not happen, so I can’t say whether that will affect my numbers or not.
In the near term, I have some organizing to do (non-eBay related) and my daughter is home for a few weeks before college starts back up, so my listing numbers will be low for the beginning of the year.
If you have free shipping and you are showing priority in your listing, I’d think the buyer could complain if the package came as parcel. eBay uses your shipping method to calculate an estimated delivery date, and a parcel package could take significantly longer to ship across the US.
If you have parcel but send it FedEx, I would think that would be OK. The delivery times between those two methods are similar. They are both considered “standard” methods of shipping.
I used the Google Translate app on the iPhone to see if I could translate the letters from Japanese. The handwriting function translated the first three letters on the left side as “underground woman”. So, it is probably Japanese.
It is pretty cool looking, and you could still use the word Tiki. I don’t see the chain in the photographs. It kind of looks like a large napkin holder from the photos.
01/03/2020 at 9:02 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Cassette decks, Reel tapes, Iroquois China, Hats, Typewriter #72389Nope, the buyer returned it. I tried not to have to pay back original shipping, but eBay forced me to do it. They did remove negative feedback.
I had no idea that this stool thing was so sophisticated! The top of the base does appear to be a different part than the bottom, but it doesn’t come off, at least not easily. I need to take some additional photos, and then I will list it with what comes off and what doesn’t. I’ll add in that it might originally have been used for incense, but is not currently usable for that purpose. It is an interesting piece even with all its dents and scratches, so it will re-sell eventually.

Jay once interviewed an eBay seller who stripped down cars and sold the parts. I tried using the search function on the right-hand side, but didn’t find the episode. Maybe someone else can find it.
I’ve been thinking about it as well. My husband’s car is also a 1999, and he might need to replace soon because it has an intermittent issue. He thinks it’s the clutch (over 270k miles on it!), but how much is he going to spend on this car that keeps coming up with new issues?
We do have a garage, but what do you do with the skeleton of the car that really isn’t sale-able? How about the engine, which is very heavy, and might not be sell-able whole? I recall that the guy that Jay interviewed had a way to move the remaining metal and sell it as scrap. That isn’t something that most of us would be able to do with normal cars and a handtruck.

One of my parents’ downsizing friends traveled a great deal when he was working (he is now retired). He accumulated a large number of USAir flatware. I’m not sure whether he grabbed them after a meal, or if they were given out as gifts. One guy purchased three sets from me. For each sale, he waited until I had printed a label before he purchased another set. I don’t know whey he wanted them shipped separately. He bought one set of 13 ABCO tablespoons and two sets of 10 SOLA tablespoons. Each were $28.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/183970298882I have started listing 70s and 80s radios from the large lot I bought in September. I sold a Zenith AM/FM portable radio for $26 and a 1950s Motorola tube AM radio for $36. Each cost less than $3.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/183991782664A friend gave me a vintage set of Carvel Hall knives, in nearly new condition, in a wood presentation box. It sold for $32.

* Total Items in Store: 1499 eBay, 35 Etsy
* Items Sold: 13 eBay
* Cost of Items Sold: $15.15 + $4.66 Commission
* Total Sales: $272.08 eBay
* Highest Price Sold: $36 for 1950s Motorola AM tube radio
* Average Price Sold: $20.93
* Returns: 0, 1 partial refund
* Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
* Number of items listed this week: 1Just got back from a year end visit with family. I had an extended handling time for a good bit of last week, so sales were slower. Things are picking up this week.
In this podcast, Ryanne said that she would take about two hours to ship about 20 items. I took about three hours today to ship my 14 items that sold while I was away. Granted, I had more fragile items, but, really, I just pack slower.
So looking forward to a 2010 challenge! I wasn’t even selling on eBay in 2010!
Or, should we do a 2020 challenge?
I am visiting family this week. I did manage one listing.
12/28/2019 at 7:09 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Soap on a Rope, Distressed messenger bag, Gold coin #72218This vase was a free item from one of my parents’ downsizing friends. It had a Home Goods sticker for around $25, but the prices on eBay were much higher. I took off the sticker and listed it for $65 or best offer. It sold full price to someone in Canada.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183908023432I sold a few jackets that I obtained at auction for a dollar or two each. First is a men’s Harris tweed jacket for $47. The second is a women’s Orvis tweed coat for $32.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/183758503969I bought these WWII replica medals for pennies in an auction lot. I was surprised to see that I listed them for $27.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183690347212This Dunphy’s teapot for hot toddies is from my auction lot of whiskey advertising items. Each item cost about a quarter. This sold for $20 to someone with the last name of Dunphy.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/183982840508I do the same, but, instead of Craig’s List, I post stuff on a local freecycling Facebook page. We also have a Freecycling event in town twice a year, and I save up stuff for that.
12/26/2019 at 6:46 pm in reply to: Buyer of a board game part just unsolicitedly shipped it back, and so much more #72137I think I did have something shipped back to me once without any message, so I just refunded them. If it is still within your return period, perhaps you should just do that?
The only thing I can think of is if they meant to ship it to someone else whose address was on a different box? But then accidentally grabbed your box?
Just out of curiosity, I would want to message him and figure out why he shipped it to you. If he asks for something in return, you don’t have any obligation to do so. If he shipped it to you by mistake, you would have to invoice him through PayPal. I guess that is where it could get a bit sticky.
