@debitendcredits – I tried sending an email, but I received a “Delivery Status Notification (Failure)”. I copied and pasted the email from your post above, so it shouldn’t be a typo edit.
WedWoes #2:
I listed the heat plate stirrer thing I mentioned last week. I received an offer for it yesterday. It was a little low, and, since I just listed it, I decided to make a counter-offer. I actually debated whether I should just accept the offer so that I could make sure to get those four extra points 😂
I started the repair on the teapot set, but asked my husband to do the drilling. Not that I can’t do it myself, but it helps me get stuff done when he does some of the work (good thing he doesn’t read this forum).
My next plan would be to test the two other heating plates (no stirrer function). I looked through my other “Woes” lying around, and some need research, test, or repair, but some are just things I’m not interested in. I think I should put those out for Freecycling.
I agree with VT that these challenges really help get shit done!!

09/08/2020 at 9:21 pm in reply to: Back To Work In The Art Department- Looking stuff you’d find in an old mine #81377I don’t really have much mine related here in NJ. However, I just bought a few auction lots yesterday, and this Protect-o-flash came with one of them:
It’s apparently some kind of emergency light. I think it could be something used in a mine. I’m sure it is vintage, but not that old. I haven’t been able to get the latch opened, but I assume there is a big heavy battery in there. It is 12x6x9, 27.5 (!) pounds.
If it is something you are interested in, respond here and I will send you an email.
This happened to me recently as well. I realized one issue was a line for “MPN” required me to click on “Add” before it registered. However, I didn’t have an explanation for the others.
@VintageTreasures – This is typical for end of summer / at or prior to the start of school / around Labor Day weekend. We just have to expect it. I noticed that Jay and Ryanne had one day with one sale. If they have about 8000 items in their store and can’t sell more than one in a day, you know it’s bad!
@Amatino – Thanks for fixing that!I listed 20 items of which 17 meet the silver challenge and one of those was a Woe.
I got out the flatware from my one commission. There are three flatware sets (!) plus a bag of random stuff where I found two sterling pieces. I’ll be breaking out each set to types of pieces (forks, spoons, knives, serverware, etc) and listing the miscellaneous stuff separately. I already have some flatware listed in one of the sets (Coronation), so I don’t have to take photos for the basic dinner forks, spoons, and knives (and they won’t count in the challenge).
Thanks for the podcast! I love coffee, so your new business sounds so interesting. You guys are setting yourselves up for success with all the careful planning.
I had a reasonable week for the end of summer. No sourcing. I only bought stuff for myself at garage sales. I’m going to an auction this afternoon, so we shall see.

I recently purchased several lots at an online auction. I bid on one lot because of some mugs I noticed; however, when I researched a glass bucket, I found it was an antique from the late 1800s Germany! A buyer corrected some mis-information I had in the title and asked for a better price. I had really overpriced it, so I sent an offer of $55. The whole lot was $3 plus premium, and I’ve sold two college mugs already. The buyer is an older gentleman who is an expert in German glass and steins as well as beer and wine. He’s been educating me about glass and beer, and I might try some of his suggestions. I gave him my email address, and I consider him my penpal now!

I purchased an Indian food grinder about two years ago for the minimum bid of $1. it sat in a deathpile because it had a plug for India, and I didn’t know what to do with it. Finally, over a month ago, I listed the parts and accessories. I sold one part as a local pickup a month ago, and now I sold two parts to one buyer for a total of $41. I’m wondering if I should start unscrewing the thing and breaking it down further!

Early this year, I picked up a set of four chairs that someone had at their curb. I steam cleaned them best I could and prepacked them in two boxes because they were so large. As you all know, setting a shipping price for two boxes can’t be done properly in eBay. Someone in NY requested a better price, so I was able to adjust the shipping from $100 to $38, and the chairs sold for $100.
I think you missed my Wednesday Woebegone post?
Yup, I’ve used it several times. It has been available a couple of months.
I got the message today, but no coupon. As I’ve mentioned above, I signed up a few years earlier, but forgot my password. I opened a new account rather than try to call and get it reset.
Anyway, here is what mine said:
You registered as upsmartsales on 11-10-2003!
First purchase: You scored teal & white unpadded sling/baby carrier on 4-26-2004. (I had young children at the time, but this might have been a gift)
First sale: You cashed out with Marianne Williamson Audio Collection + 2 other tapes on 4-29-2004. (She actually tried to run for president last year).
I think a WOW Report is better than a Woe report! Congratulations!
Woebegone Wednesday #1
I have a copper tea pot, sugar, and creamer set that I had bought in an auction lot last year. I listed (and sold!) the rest of the lot, but there are two lids with wood knobs that were not connected. I bought wood filler, but haven’t done anything with it. Yesterday (because of the challenge), I filled the holes and now I need to screw them back on. Then, I can photo and list.
At the beginning of the year, I bought an auction lot of scales. I listed everything except for three items that the auctioneer called electronic scales. They are actually not scales, but a heating plates for beakers, like something that a chemist might use. The first one I had looked did heat up, but it also has a function for spinning a magnetic rod that you put in the beaker. I thought I had no way to test it, but later I found that I have some magnetic beads from a jewelry lot. Last night, I heated up water in a large Pyrex cup to boiling, threw in two magnetic beads, and had them spinning like crazy! The other two only have the heating function, but I do have to test them.
Now, for the challenge, can I only take photos and list on Wednesday, or do I just need to report what I’ve done?
You can’t change the listing; however, tell him to accept the offer, but don’t pay. Then you can send him an invoice with the lower shipping cost.
My total for the August challenge remains at 9.
I like the Woebegone challenge because I always have items that need repair or testing. In fact, I have two such items ready, but haven’t been touched for a month or two. One even has some silver tone metal on it! Wednesdays are, unfortunately, the day that I go into work, but that just means I need to prepare ahead of time!!
