I listed 27 items.
I just got back from a long weekend visit, but I did take some photos and start some listings before I left.
Sure, I’ve had a few international sales through eBay’s service recently. They go to an address in Glendale Heights, IL.
If you have free shipping set up on your items internationally, then you need to stop that right away. If you want to include shipping domestically, you can do the math and figure out a reasonable price for CONUS (continental US, basically the 48 states that excludes HI, AK, and other territories).
Anywhere else, you got to do calculated shipping. On eBay, I had just about everything with calculated shipping. On Etsy, I’m trying my hand at included shipping except for a few large or heavy items, but that is only CONUS.
Thanks to you both. I’ll just tell him the price without tax and give him my PayPal email address.
Also, got a question if anyone can answer. I sold some vintage labels, which appeared to “go missing” because there was no movement for about a week. I submitted a “missing mail” request via the USPS website, and three days later I received an email saying that the mail could not be found.
Yesterday, I refunded the buyer.
Today, of course, it was delivered.
If they pay me back via PayPal, how do I collect the sales tax? I know am overthinking this for less than a dollar in tax, but I want to at least try to be on the straight and narrow. I don’t want to have to submit a buck for Ohio sales tax for an $11 item. Will PayPal submit the tax for you, and how do I set this up?

I had a strange thing happen; I think Tuesday evening. I got a call from a buyer on my home line. We have a normal land line, which we keep using less and less, but still want it around in case of an emergency.
A buyer called me up because she bought a set of 4 placemats, but I had six in there. She said she felt bad about it, so she looked me up via my LLC information & address on the label! I told her that I probably mistyped and it was perfectly fine. She seems to be collecting things from Bagshaw, the company from St. Lucia that made them, and I think she just wanted to talk about it. I had done the research about the company, so I knew a little. She said that she only buys from eBay in guest mode, so she can’t message me. She didn’t seem crazy, and she mentioned that she was 80, so I think it was just a nice call. Surprised me though.
If I remember correctly, the price was edging up a bit before the lots started closing, but the bidding war happened mostly at the end.
When the lots start to close, the auction goes into live mode, which pushes the lots ending soonest to the top. Since the bidding war kept pushing the Art lot out by 2 min every time a new bid came in, we didn’t really see what was happening until the majority of other lots had ended.
You can actually see the bid history if you select it within the listing. I just checked it, and the bid was $801 just prior to the auction closing.
Julie – I just googled “fibroid surgery” and sounds like you will need to take it easy for several weeks. Good luck on your recovery; I hope it is fast. Maybe you should consider putting your store on pause for a few weeks, but setting things up for listing sounds like a great idea!
The majority of my sales this week had to do with the MaxSold auction I put together for my neighbor. I’ve been working on it since the beginning of summer, and we waited to have it after he had moved into his new house.
The high sale was a group of art. It wouldn’t have been a big deal if there wasn’t a signed & numbered framed Andy Warhol print in it (photos 3 & 4). While we were amazed during the final bidding, I didn’t actually do the research to find out why. Guess I wanted just to finish off the day and get to bed. Then, @lukastreasuretrove mentioned here what it was. My neighbor’s wife had bought it before they were married, and it hang in their dining room for decades. He wasn’t aware of what it was, and it wasn’t his style. I had quite a bit of work getting this auction together and didn’t do the research. However, at least two buyers did and duked it out in a bidding war. The buyer’s son picked it up, and he actually like some of the other art in the lot, so that was nice knowing that some other pieces will get displayed. Sold for $5450. Even with fees and commissions taken off, this is my highest sold ever.

The next highest is a 40 piece sterling flatware set for $767. The buyer actually wasn’t particularly happy when she looked at it. Either she was angling for a partial refund or my pictures were too good and made the set look more shiny than they were. I had a talk with her, told her to get them professionally polished and said that other sets have gone for similar prices on MaxSold (which is true). I did not offer any money back.

While I may not have recognized the Warhol, I did recognize the two Agam’s; both signed and framed. When I was a kid, my aunt & uncle bought an Agam movable piece of art when they were in Israel, and I’ve seen his stuff in museums. I also picked up a framed print on fabric from a rummage sale years ago. The two prints sold for $385 & $310.

Steve had just showed a Dual turntable that he had sold in one of his videos when my neighbor showed me the old stereo system with one in his basement. It also had some other nice equipment. I was not surprised it went for $130.

I was a bit surprised when this pair of chairs sold for $125, but not as much as everyone else. Mid-century modern definitely sells; even this set with tired, old cushions.

There were some other high priced items like jewelry & vinyl records, but a few others I found interesting was a stone bust of Poseidon that went for $51 and two IBM Selectric typewriters for $45 that my husband pulled out of the attic.

The pickup went very smoothly with my husband and son as volunteers as well as my neighbor and three of his friends. One buyer who bought the most number of items, all low prices, didn’t speak English very well. My husband speaks Russian and happened to be the one helping the buyer and his helper.
You have a choice between MaxSold or seller managed.
MaxSold charges the $1250 to come to the house, take & upload all the photos, and write the descriptions. The owner is still responsible for organizing their stuff into auction lots.
For seller managed, which is what I did, you don’t pay the $1250.
Their commission fees are the same whether it is MaxSold or seller managed.
@Amatino – Sounds terrible, and what awful timing. And, I know you are allergic to just about everything. If I recall correctly, you did not get the COVID vaccine due to all your allergies, so maybe this illness will now provide you with a bit of natural protection? Just trying to look for that silver lining …
I listed 19 items this week. Yesterday was the auction pickup, and now I’m getting back into the groove.
No, I had no idea. I told my neighbor that I did not do the research, but that it might be worth something, might not. The signature really doesn’t look like Andy Warhol even though the Google image search is telling me that this is his design (that I’m doing after the fact).
Now I understand. We were wondering what was going on, and why it went for so much, thanks for clearing that up.
My neighbor’s wife did go to auctions at one time, which was evident from some of the other items I listed. The Agam prints (which I immediately recognized) were from auctions.
I do like Andy Warhol. After all, we both grew up in Pittsburgh!
I can see where it could be part of my business, but I don’t think it will be. I need a owner who doesn’t really care about how much their items go for and is willing to share the profits. And, plenty of time to set the auction up.
Normally, MaxSold charges $1250 to catalog all the items and then a tiered commission of 35% to $7000 and then 25% after that. Assuming someone has decent values in their items, my taking a 50% commission instead of the $1250 is probably not as good of a deal for the owner.
That $1250 went up from $800 when I ran my first one about five years ago, so maybe it is a better deal now. A true transition planner first does an estate sale, then MaxSold, and finally helps with the sale of the house (either bringing in a real estate agent or being one his/herself).
I did find out that another neighbor has sold their house and needs advice on selling her stuff. I talked to her about MaxSold, but I’ll just make the first call and refer her. But, yeh, she could have been another customer if I didn’t have my part time day job.
You know, to be fair, I worked on that auction all summer. Just that it is all listed at once. If it was distributed as I took photos & wrote up the descriptions, it wouldn’t be such a big deal. But, since those are the rules …
It was a record breaking week!!!
This website & forum has been such a big part of my resale journey; I don’t know where else I would go for the discussion and comradery. Sure, it is smaller, but it’s just a cool and calm place to talk about your eBay/resale business.
My auction for my neighbor is going well for this point in time. It closes on Thursday, so we still have three days to go. The items that I thought would get good bids are the ones that are the highest so far. There are always a few surprises at the end, so I’m excited to see what will happen. I’ve invited my neighbor over for dinner so that we can watch the end of the auction together.

We were able to remove the listing for his refrigerator. We would have had to disconnect the water line prior to pickup, and it didn’t have an easy turn-off switch. My neighbor’s agreement with his buyer is that he can leave whatever he wants, and they will take care of it. MaxSold was able to remove it since there were no bids on the listing.
For sales, another blah week.
