I do not live in Palm Beach County, but my parents do; Boynton Beach in particular. They have brought stuff to me from their downsizing friends, but they won’t be driving up until the late spring. I really don’t want to ask them to store stuff for six months unless it was really worth the effort. I’m assuming these are $10 – $40 items that would be great for a local person, so that would be a better situation if you can find it.
If you think that individual pieces in your inventory more like $50 and higher (and no one else is interested), go ahead and post photos here, or I can give you a way to contact me privately.
This happened to me several months ago. I called the USPS and asked why I had to do this and how ridiculous that they thought I could get my buyer (who I already refunded) to come in. In the end, my buyer did actually agree to come in, but the cashier denied it because they did not bring the packaging, which they had already thrown out.
The USPS is being squeezed for many reasons. Obviously, there is the pandemic, some crazy requirement on their employee pension funds, and their loss on packages from China and similar countries that get a break on shipping to the US. They are so low on cash that they are trying everything they can to not pay insurance claims.
Another issue I had was I sent a package a few months ago to the mid-west and, after it finally made it to its destination, I was charged extra because they said that it was 3″ longer than I said it was. Possibly, I made a mistake, although I’m really careful about that. The thing is that the PRIORITY package took ONE MONTH to get to its destination, and eBay had already refunded the buyer. I disputed the charge at the beginning of September and have not received any money back yet.
So, I’m ranting, but I’m also trying to understand the issues that the USPS is going through. I’ve been packaging my shipments like crazy and using UPS and FedEx more often. I haven’t had any insurance claims since the one I mentioned at the beginning, so I can’t say whether those companies would be any better or not.
Oh, yes, I forgot about that part. What Jay said – use the reason “buyer requested” or words to that affect.
There is a pull-down menu in front of every item in your “Manage all orders” page. Pull down the menu and select “cancel order”. That should do it.
10/06/2020 at 10:05 am in reply to: What does Ebay do with Global Shipping items they will not ship or return? #82196Yup, Temudgin’s link. I had a tube radio denied entry to Canada. Later, I was able to find the radio in 8ten1944 sold items. I now restrict the sale of tube radios to the US only.
I think that this guy/gal/company also sells their own stuff. Not all the things I see in their inventory are restricted.
I believe they are a kids’ building toy. They connect at right angles, and you can build a big structure.
Thanks for responding, VT. That’s what I thought. The paper items I reported this week were books or posters. I did not count any boxes.
I’m not sure whether I have any more paper in my non-listed inventory, so that might be it. Or, perhaps I will source some!
Absolutely! There is always a small (but doubtful) chance that the contract could be canceled, and I have my backup plan. If I didn’t enjoy working there, it wouldn’t be a big deal to just walk away.
It is a great, small business in its own right (about 120 employees), and I know several people from my previous company. In fact, the president of my new company worked at the old one as a consultant, so that is how I got the job.
My story fits in particularly well with the podcast subject this week. I starting working on eBay when my company moved the plant I worked in to another state. I wasn’t finding a job in my field within a reasonable commute, so I decided to focus on my kids and start my little business. However, I just started a part time job in March. Kind of weird, but I heard about the position in the fall of 2019, and that is how the timing went. I now go into the office once a week and get my share of adult interaction and technical challenges. If the job gets busier, I should probably focus on that because it’s a great job and more money. I would miss the auctions and sourcing, though.
Did anyone notice that eBay replaced the 6x4x4 boxes with 6 x 4 3/4 x 4 3/4? My guess is that it fits better in the padded flat rate envelopes now that they are made just a bit smaller. This was mentioned by a caller several months ago as a 7x5x4 box no longer fits.
I started listing an auction purchase from about a month ago. I bought three bins filled with old dental / denture equipment. Not vintage, but not new. I paid very little for it, so I should do well. However, I found that a bunch of chemicals are not saleable, and I don’t think I can just throw them in the trash. I’m going to have to find a hazardous drop off day in my county and hope they don’t realize that it is not regular household stuff. Otherwise, I’ll have to pay to have them properly disposed of.
Week of Sept 27 – Oct 3
Total Items in Store: 1352 eBay, 35 Etsy
Items Sold: 13 eBay
Cost of Items Sold: $9.35 + $25 Commission
Total Sales: $337.26 eBay
Highest Price Sold: $91 Antique Imperial Club Rye Whiskey jug
Average price: $25.94
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 33The week started well with the antique whiskey jug sale, then went to a standstill with FOUR days of NO sales. Then Saturday just kicked some ass and brought my numbers up to average. I had fewer sales but a higher average price. This week has started well with a strong Sunday, hopefully it will be a normal to strong week.
I listed 33 last week; 5 were paper.
Thanks for all the kudos on the September challenges! They really helped get my listing numbers up and to clear up some items that had been sitting for way too long.
I have some outside interests that I have to focus on now, so I’m probably going to back off a bit for October.
VT: Question on the October challenge: If I list something that is in its original box, which is cardboard, does it count? I wasn’t thinking that it would, but I thought I’d ask.
10/02/2020 at 11:43 am in reply to: REVISIT: Scavenger Life Episode 425: Worried? Get to work! #82094All of the phones have been sold domestically. I specifically stated in my listing that the buyer needs to confirm with their carrier that the phone will work in their system. One of the buyers requested a return because it won’t work with Verizon. They haven’t shipped it back yet, so I’m hopeful.
I had another one returned because the battery didn’t work. I probably should have not included the batteries because they are too old to be usable. I haven’t relisted it, but I will without the battery. In another transaction, I sold someone just the box and manual for $20, but haven’t relisted the phone yet.
I think I sold two others that haven’t come back, so that is good. Any that I relist, I will specifically state that Verizon is not allowing new phones that aren’t current enough (I think that they have to be 4G?).
The original owner is a friend of my parents. He said that when he found something he liked, he bought plenty of backups. But, having five backup cell phones seems excessive to me!
10/01/2020 at 1:50 pm in reply to: LiveAuctioneers.com Security Breach, Change your password! #82081I received an email about the breach a month or two ago, but I hadn’t done anything about it. I was logging into something last night, and Chrome gave me a warning about various passwords that might have been compromised. I’ve never seen that before, so it must be a new function on Chrome. I haven’t quite made it to LiveAuctioneers yet, but it is on the list.
You might have an account with them because they will let you see sold prices only if you log in. It’s a good research tool if you can’t find the item elsewhere.
09/30/2020 at 9:41 pm in reply to: Koronette fireplace stereo bar, BSR record changer, Pro Tex U Lite, VHS Tape #82061I hear you, Steve, eBay is quiet right now. I have only two items that I thought were more interesting than average from last week:
I purchased this cool poster mounted on foam board in an online auction a month or two ago. The Merv Griffin Casino Resort was in Atlantic City from 1988 to 1998. It is under different management different now. Apparently, Merv Griffin and Donald Trump were both interested in buying the resort, and Merv won out. In the end, though, he didn’t do well with it. I paid $5.75, and it sold at best offer of $30.

I bought this 1970-71 unused beer advertising calendar about three or more years ago. I thought it would sell pretty quickly, but the right buyer was nowhere to be found until now. I paid about $1, and it sold for best offer of $20.
