Slow week in omfugland. Made $324 between ebay and etsy with an $80 majolica platter as my top sale, on the downside I had a $100 item break in transit. The election seemed to kill my sales and they are only sluggishly coming back.

I am also a cancer survivor and I expect that I and 20 million other Americans will lose our health Insurance as that was one of Trump’s major promises–to repeal the ACA on day one. His “replacement” idea is to allow junk health insurance policies to be sold over state lines, and to push healthcare savings plans–in other words, his replacement is pretty useless.
What really bothers me is when I hear middle income people claim that they are paying for ACA subsidies without understanding that the law had some built-in funding–small tax hikes on things like medical devices, tanning salons, and yes, a small hike to the taxes of wealthier Americans, paid for much of the subsidies. Not to mention that I personally have paid into the tax system for over 40 years and have never taken a cent of Federal dollars and don’t feel guilty about my subsidy whatsoever. Many of the Americans complaining about the law weren’t even affected by it as over 80% of Americans are insured through their employers. It is true that about 8 million people were basically screwed because they did not qualify for the subsidies, and that issue could be fixed except the Republican Congress didn’t want to fix it.
I am old and several years away from medicare (which Americans need to know that the Republicans would also like to cut if they could do so without riling their base of old white people.) To finish, I believe that in a decent society that healthcare is a right and shouldn’t be a privilege, but clearly millions disagree with me. I do hope that I don’t get cancer again before I get medicare but c’est la vie…
Hi Nancy, I did promote my etsy store to my ebay customers for awhile, it didn’t seem to work, although some customers from ebay have found me. I decided that I would rather keep my stores seperate.
Actually Jay finding merchandise is not a problem–finding cheap merchandise is, LOL. The cost of all my goods sold this week was just under $10 per item, so not too bad, just not .50, etc.

Returns: 0A good week despite sending a customer the wrong item. At any rate, I am amazed at those of you who spend $10 to make about the same as I do, I tell you stuff costs more around here, why? nearly all the Goodwills here use the internet to sell merchandise which drives the way the price in their stores, second, intense dealer competition, the Estate sale people here do not have to price down to sell items, Estate sales here can attract over 100 shoppers, many of whom are buying for resell, so things are competitive. The local auction house yields some good buys, but with a nation wide bidder base, prices are still strong on the better stuff–oriental carpets? What J & R can get for $5 sells for much more here, up to several hundred dollars for a large carpet. Even so, I went to a proper Antiques show on Saturday and spent around $150 for several nice items to resell.
I live in an expensive area so I have to deal with that. I went to an estate sale today, and prices were ebay prices, in other words retail–there were a couple of things that I may consider going back for on Sunday, although their ad said that they made no promise of coming down in price on the last day! (WTH? that is a new one.)
I buy mostly at thrift stores and auctions but I have to pay more and that is that, I would have almost nothing in my stores if I put a limit of paying say under $5 on a given item. The thrift stores here usually price starting at $4.99 and up, still, If I can sell something for $40 that I paid $9 for in 2 days as I did recently, I can live with that. Fortunately box lots spread my cost per item.
I sell a few packages to the UK per month and my customers there are still ordering and paying outrageous shipping fees, so I suppose that despite the lower pound, if you have what a shopper wants they pay. On the hand, damn I wish that I could go to the UK and do a little shopping, LOL.
Hi Mike. First there is no program available to transfer ebay listings to etsy, so it has to be done manually unfortunately. Costs include .20 per item and the listing is good for 4 months, there is a “sold” fee of (I think) 4.5% and a transfer fee (similar to ebay’s) for using their payment system which is called “direct check-out” the customer can pay with any card including paypal, but standalone paypal is no longer offered to new sellers–payments transfer to your bank account on Monday (and you can get the money earlier by request after you are on etsy for a few weeks.) Etsy offers discounted shipping labels which is good. Yes, any item 20 or more years is “vintage” there–which makes sense since their buyers seem younger than ebay’s. Anyway, after you get the hang of etsy I find it more enjoyable than selling on ebay.
