re clothes, I still think that luxury brands will do well–Flim still seems to be making good money on high end but being in New York is her advantage. I think that the collectibles market has gone soft too, I am selling about the same as I always do, except summer when it gets even slower. Searching completed auctions is depressing–and I suppose that some clothing is going the way of the “penny book” probably because how wide spread the “weigh and pays” are. I don’t know– the market is changing for sure–Jay I think you diversified into rental properties while holding on to your consulting business at exactly the right time.
Paulo–excellent post. Trump contradicts himself on policy so we can only wait and see on what those “good” things that he is going to do for this country will be, LOL. I live with a Trump supporter so I am no stranger to the arguments for him…sigh…
Meanwhile in my State employers are fighting for workers since jobs are fairly plentiful. Need I remind people that in terms of creating jobs, etc. it is the State and Local Government that make policies that really produce employment opportunities, the Federal Government can only do so much, it is up to the states to create an environment where companies want to do business, and here, in the home of the $15 per hour base pay (even without that WA state’s minimum wage is one of the highest in the Country), business is hiring period.

ebay has been pretty slow for me as well–every brick and mortar I have been in lately is packed, looks like people are buying new stuff for the Holidays.
I do pretty much all collectibles and yes, the 4th quarter for me has never been a huge money maker, it is after Christmas, when people are treating themselves, that I typically have better weeks.
Glad to hear that you made money from political memorabilia Linda–I just bought a small collection myself, have listed a few things and sold one already Have some cool Eisenhower items to list today.
Great stuff Steve! Thanks for doing these. Love seeing your animals. Now, one bitter comment, I can not for the life of me, get more than $50 for Corcoran boots–how long did you have yours? Maybe I am too impatient…
I would fall over if I found anything as cool as that Harley drinks set for free–I might have tried to see if I could find the matching glasses.
I would also point out that the current President met with unprecedented obstruction–he had a good jobs bill ready to go that concentrated on infrastructure spending (badly needed) and guaranteeing low cost loans for small business that was blocked in Congress. It is astonishing that he got as much done as he did. I would look to the State governments, example Kansas, to see why and how the economy is doing so poorly in some areas. Need I also note that in places like Michigan hundreds of thousands of jobs were saved when the Government bailed out the Auto industry which has recovered. The problem we have now is the wash of propaganda mostly on one side to be honest, that is convincing some people that the country is a disaster (where were these people during the last Bush administration?) At any rate, I wait to see how the new President handles dumping 22 million people off of healthcare, and giving yet more tax cuts to already wealthy people–will this create jobs? never has before, and again, look at the state of Kansas which has become a disaster under such policies.
Friday set a new record for online spending, the stores near me are packed, I have seen more help wanted signs in the last 2 years than I have in many years. People may not be buying as heavily on ebay, but that could be because their choice of venues has expanded exponentially. 2008 was a bleak period in this country and the recovery made in the last 8 years stabilized the economy. My partner’s family trust lost 1 million in equity (they are invested in the market) all of it regained since our current President righted the ship. I will give Trump a chance, but frankly his picks for his cabinet are frightening.

On the other hand sales have been pretty sluggish this week at least in the antiques and collectibles area–I have had about the same amount of sales (1-2 a day) but low dollar, I will be interested to see everyone’s figures later. Also, I have been going a bit crazy at the auctions, and want to put the brakes on just a bit by being extremely picky on what I spend my money on.
The ACA requires that all insurance companies, not only those who sell through exchanges, cover basic preventative care like mammograms, colonoscopies, etc. so even if you are buying catastrophic with a high premium those basic services are covered, the ACA requires that there is no prejudice against pre-existing conditions (for many insurers that could mean something like pregnancy for heaven’s sake!), no caps on care, so if you do get cancer like me you still have insurance after the fact. Linda the ACA only had Democratic votes because the Republicans refused to work with the President from day one, it is no more nefarious than that, he tried to work with the Republicans and 3 did work with him initially and were pressured to vote NO. 40,000 people died each year before the law was passed due to lack of insurance, and unpaid medical expenses were the number one cause of bankruptcy, Hospitals were being put out of business because they must give emergency care even if unpaid for. People also forget that health insurance costs were rising at an exponential rate before the law-the ACA slowed that down, and the problem with expensive premiums could be fixed, but the Party of No refuses and Americans, even those in Red State America like yourself Linda, are getting hurt, and are in for a world full of pain in the next 4 IMO. I will wait to see what the new President opposes to “replace” the ACA but I am not optimistic.
call ebay is my advice, despite the refund, you did fulfill your end of the bargain, through no fault of your own his package was delayed–ebay does have some sort of seller protection which I would think would kick in at this point.
I wouldn’t want someone going through my trash, but I have picked up stuff from the curb when I lived in LA. We had our 50’s shop and found 2 great sofas on the curb that we had recovered and sold for hundreds of dollars a piece. I was donating to a Goodwill truck once that had a “junk pile” and commented on 2 vintage Tonka firetrunks and they let me have them–I sold them for a couple of hundred bucks.
