We went to an estate sale in the Salt Lake area. The man was a 2XL and had a TON of Tommy Bahama shirts. We literally stuffed our Prius completely full of items from that sale. I think we ultimately listed 40-50 2XL Tommy Bahama shirts, about 20 pair of 40 x 32 jeans and dress pants for men and about 15 pair of size 13 NICE men’s shoes (including some Tommy Bahama shoes). We got everything for about $1.50 each and have already sold almost all of it (it’s been about 3 months since we listed it all). We sold everything for $15 – $25 per item. It may not necessarily be that unusual, but we were stunned to see so much of the same thing in one place.
Another nice benefit of the find was the ease in listing. The guy would buy the same shirt, but in 5 different colors. Same with the dress pants, etc. So, we’d just group everything by the same style and whip out several of the same listing, just in different colors. It was awesome.
Is there somewhere special I have to be to look at the listing to see the glitch? When I look at the listing, I show shipping as $9.76 economy shipping.
I’m wondering if this could be a case where, because you are looking at your own item from your location it’s offering you the local pick up option. I don’t see local pick up at all.
Can you capture a screen shot of what you are seeing?
Thanks.

I’ve never actually looked at that field because I just use the filtering on the Seller Hub orders page to see those items that are “Awaiting Shipment” and “Awaiting Payment”, etc. So, I just checked mine and I have one item that doesn’t have the date paid filled in and they paid today. That particular transaction was done through the Global Shipping Program. Just curious on if that may be the deciding factor. I went through all of my orders and that seemed to be the case for all my GSP items. Can you see if you’re seeing the same thing? Thanks.

I sent some example listings to our High Risk team and they did a sweep of the category and got (most) of the listings removed. Sellers that have Managed Accounts were given fair warning time to get them removed. The team said they will continue to sweep the category for offending listings. Let me know if you are continuing to see theses items. I’ll take another look as well.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

I searched Bust Action Figures and didn’t have anything come up. I changed my search to show the most recent listings first as I would assume that’s when I would see them as they eventually get taken down. I didn’t find anything so I’m still hoping you can send me some examples of active listings so I can reach out to the appropriate team to resolve. Thank you!

04/02/2018 at 4:59 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 354: The Long Game – 10 Years On eBay #36936We had another decent week this week and a couple of interesting sales. We actually sold two framed prints this week (now we have sold 3) and my husband is now very good at custom making boxes from large sheets of cardboard and packing up these prints. It was a love/hate thing on these prints. We loved having them hanging in our living room and office, so we hated seeing them go, but what a victory in selling the 3 prints that we got for a total of $10 for ~$300! ๐
Our stats this week:
Listings in store at beginning of week: 785
Listings in store at end of week: 841
New Listings: 86
Sold Items: 34
Total Sales: $1016.82
Cost of Goods Sold: 93.07 (12%)
Average Sales Price: $27
Cost for new inventory this week: $323 (Yes we are still aggressively building inventory to reach our 2,500 goal)
Highest Sale: $149.95 for a “Back to the Future” camcorder we picked up at an online auction for $6.00
Favorite Sale: We picked up some authentic vintage 60s and 70s clothing. I found this adorable (most likely hand made) go-go mini dress for $2.00. Listed it and sold it the same day for $40. I knew that dress would go and it was a small victory when it sold knowing my instincts were good. ๐We still have a ton of stuff to list this week from our weekend scavenging, so will hopefully get another 100 or so listed this week!
Congrats to you Jay and Ryanne on your 10-year eBay anniversary. You’re an inspiration to us all!
BTW, FWIW, I also really do not like auctions but have been tempted to try them on some unique items. But our camcorder sale is a prime example of why not. We found another camcorder for sale just like ours, but was on an auction (ended on Sunday, which is supposed to be the better days for ending your auction). However, it only got 1 bid and sold for $129. We decided to just put ours up high and knew where we wanted to be from a best offer perspective. Got our offer within 24 hours ($149) and was happy we didn’t go the auction route… I am *very* curious to hear how your D&D stuff does on auction. I haven’t completely ruled it out, but have not yet been compelled to do it!
Happy Monday all!
Okay, so I googled Koa Seed necklace and that is exactly what it is! ๐ Thanks for replying Ryanne. I appreciate you.
It’s light and I would say it feels like seeds. Someone on my FB post thought Koa seeds, so that may be. I’ll do some digging around that. I tested for coral, but it doesn’t appear to be that based on my vinegar test. ๐
03/22/2018 at 1:34 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 352: Scavenging is The Alternative Early Retirement #35871I agree with you 100% Jay. The flat wages for employees while CEOs have seen ginormous wage increases is unsettling. I also see the reduction in Unions as a HUGE loss to this country. The current case with the Supreme Court (Janus v. American Federation of State) will further hurt Unions, which will roll down hill and also impact the wages of non-union shops. This is why elections matter. But… I won’t go down that rabbit hole for now! ๐
I’m super grateful to work for eBay. They pay great wages, have great diversity in the work place, give amazing benefits and are stewards of the earth and environment. I’m truly proud to work for this great company and grateful that my husband can benefit from the opportunity to work in an environment much more suited to who he is as a person. We are indeed lucky.
03/22/2018 at 10:01 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 352: Scavenging is The Alternative Early Retirement #35847The main reason we identified the oxygen tanks as valuable is because my mom is on oxygen (she has Stage 4 COPD). So, I’ve shopped for them in the past for her. It was actually my husband that saw the and asked about them. They really helped our week, for sure.
Regarding the 30-day listings vs. GTC, it’s hard to say. I’ve heard the same thing about being higher in search results because your listing is “new” when you sell similar. It does make sense that new, fresh listings would be given higher precedent, but some of our items are unique and don’t have a lot of competition (while some stuff does for sure!) I would also say that we have noticed that some of our “newly listed” items do tend to get noticed and sell. But buyers may have found those items anyway…
From a time-suck perspective, I timed myself yesterday and it took me about a minute per listing to relist. I had 20 of them to do and it took 20 minutes to quickly review each one, check for inaccuracies (I was doing lots of shoes, so checking to make sure size was right in the title, description, etc.) add a few keywords to the title and submit. So, maybe it makes sense to relist every 30 days (especially now that I know the quality of our listings is better and I won’t have to do as much grooming in the future).
Are you guys considering trying it?
03/21/2018 at 10:33 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 352: Scavenging is The Alternative Early Retirement #35825Life has been crazy busy so I didn’t post my numbers last week, but figured I’d get them done this week. (I track obsessively, but just didn’t take the time to post…) Anyway, here it goes.’
For week 11
– Total Items in Store at beginning of week: 697
– Total Items listed: 72 (slow week – our goal is 100)
– Total Items Sold: 34 (best week ever)
– Average Sales Price: $35.47
– Sales $1,205.84 (this includes 2 oxygen concentrators sold on a local classifieds site)
– Total COGS: $148.25 (12.20% – our goal is to stay under 15%)
No Returns (yay!)

We sold some really fun items this week.
– A Flowbee for $59.95 (picked up for 2.00)
– A Jimmy Buffett book (A Pirate Looks at 50) signed by Bill Hackett and Jimmy himself. Sold for $55, bought for $1.00.
– Some Goodwill RedWings sold for $51
– My husband parted out a dryer he found on the side of the road and sold the Control Board for $50.
– 2 oxygen concentrators (One sold for $300 and one for $175, bought for $15 each at an estate sale)Because we are new, I’ve had our listings run for just 30 days. Then, when they expire I go take a look at them to do a little grooming on pictures, keywords, descriptions, etc. We are definitely better at listing now and it has helped to re-evaluate them as they expire. I think we will go through that cycle for another month and then, as they expire, relist them as Good Till Canceled.
All in all, I feel good about how things are going for just being a couple of months into it and this podcast, YouTube and this forum have been so helpful in setting us up for success! Thank you!

03/20/2018 at 12:45 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 352: Scavenging is The Alternative Early Retirement #35644Hi Beth,
I raised the concern regarding the info in the help article about letting buyers “keep the item” being out there publicly for buyers to see. Earlier today, that information was removed from the Help pages, although, of course, sellers are still able to let the buyers keep the item if it’s not worth the cost of a return label.
Thanks for the feedback and please keep it coming.
Thanks.
