Folks, if you’re using promoted listings (the advertising feature, not promoted sales) then you’ll want to read the post I just posted on the ebay forums in the technical issues area.
__________________________There is a technical issue with promoted listings, those which appear as sponsored and are essentially advertisement listings. If you have, among other shipping options, local pickup selected as an option, then the listing appearance on the user interface side is differnt from the actual original listing. An example is found in my listing 273097019500. The original listing wording is:
$25.00Buy It Now
+$7.70 shipping
The promoted/sponsored listing wording is:
$25.00
Buy It Now
Pickup only: Free
The variance is on the last line, which I have bolded for emphasis. If the orignal listing includes free local pick up as one of the shipping options, then the promoted listing adopts only that information and conveys it as if free local pickup is the only option. This discourages potential buyers from clicking on the promoted listing. In fact, its a wonder that anyone, other than a local buyer would even consider clicking on such a promoted listing. This is a technical issue which arose from incorrect coding when creating the promoted listings feature in its current iteration. The reason it was not discovered prior to release is because, whoever conducted the user interface pre-launch testing during vetting did not have a sufficiently robust testing methodology.
The only solution I can see to resolve this for me, as a seller, is to remove free pick up from my listings until your technical solutions folks have an opportunity for refactoring and appropriate retesting. I’d appreciate it if someone could let me know when that is done so that I can go back and add free pickup back onto my listings. Thanks!

I noticed from the outset of using promoted listings, which was about 1 month ago or more for me, that when i looked in the shipping column in the matrix during the set-up process for a promoted listing campaign, that there appeared the phrase, “local pick up only”. I called eBay customer service a couple of times asking them about why I would see the local pick up only in the setup of those promoted campaigns, and it became clear to me that the customer service people didn’t have a clear understanding of the impact of that. That’s when I decided to start looking at individual listings to see what the customer sees on the user interface side. This helped me confirm the impact.
I can only say that this is likely an issue which commenced with the most recent update to promoted listings. I don’t know if they are on their first initial roll out or if they have done updated releases since its initial roll out. That information isn’t transparent to us, obviously. Anyway, it’s been some weeks.
I doubt they will fix it anytime soon. But if I hear anything, I’ll post it.

This is not good news. Seems like a pretty big glitch in their system.

Is there somewhere special I have to be to look at the listing to see the glitch? When I look at the listing, I show shipping as $9.76 economy shipping.
I’m wondering if this could be a case where, because you are looking at your own item from your location it’s offering you the local pick up option. I don’t see local pick up at all.
Can you capture a screen shot of what you are seeing?
Thanks.

You have to search for the item by item number. then both the original listing will appear and the promoted listing will appear at the same time. you’ll see the differences then

Ok, so in the process of going to one of my listings to demonstrate this with a screen shot. I discovered a new glitch! UGHHHHHHHHHHH. So, I called ebay to tell them about their newest technical glitch. So, I added 2 promoted listings last night. One actually went into effect and the other didn’t. The hitch is this: both of them indicated as being active and had a population of listings. If I wouldn’t have checked by pulling up individual listings, I wouldn’t have known! UGHHHH. I have a screen shot but dont know how to add it. I guess I’d have to do some kind of imgur thing. no time for that now. I’ll check back again later. thanks.

Yep, just upload to https://imgur.com/ (no account needed). Then post the links here. It’s super easy.
Screenshots will help us better understand the issues you;re concerned about.

Yep, I see the screenshot. I’m kind of confused by the error. Are you being charged for anything extra, or its just an annoying bug?

the error is that the promoted listings isn’t working. there is no ad being displayed, even though it appears to be an active campaign from that dashboard report. As to costing money. Promoted listings are advertisements which are charged once a promoted listing is clicked on and then purchased (if the original listing is clicked on for the purchase instead, then there is no charge, despite the fact that the listing is promoted). The issue is that I need the promoted listings to work to increase sales. That is one of the tools besides running a sale. So to the extent that my sales are hampered as a result, its more than a pesky bug.

So when you click here: https://pls.ebay.com/plsweb/dashboard
Does it show that you have sold no items in the past month with promoted listings? -

no, it shows some have sold BUT only on some of the campaigns. I change up campaigns with some frequency. But it is supposed to be working for all of the campaigns which show up as active. and it doesn’t

More issues with promoted listings. I found some of my promoted listings actually appear below the original listing. This is counter to the idea of promoting. I talked to ebay about it. They said they would bring the matter to their technical team. Who knows, it may have just gone into a black hole.
