I sold an old software disc almost immediately after listing a year or so ago (he must have had a search out for it since it sold so fast). It was an old CAD design software disc. The guy said he doesn’t like the current stuff on the market and he either misplaced or damaged the only one he had so he was so happy to purchase mine and he left great feedback…it was at the bottom of a box lot.
My hubby and I have always been very frugal. I have always cooked at home (I can’t see spending $15 for a spaghetti dinner at Olive Garden when I can make it for a few bucks at home). Every time I hear a restaurant horror story (someone getting sick, the health deparment shutting someone down, etc.) I am always glad I cooked at home most of our 38 years of marriage. I also feel I can better control fats/sugars/salt etc. when I cook it myself. We began investing our savings a couple of decades ago with a financial planner and at one meeting he told us that the biggest problem we will have with our money is spending it since we have always been such savers! I guess a nice problem to have. We both retired (on the same day) five years ago and we both continue to do some sort of work. My hubby works sesonally as an usher for a major league baseball team and I work security for the same baseball team, sell on eBay and work part-time from home from the government agency I retired from writing two online newsletters…so I guess we still keep saving money, but really enjoy what we do!
I’m not a huge garage sale gal since it can be a lot of driving around for little to show for it, but this past weekend we passed a garage sale on an old country road then turned around “just to see” and stretch a bit. I came across the hot air rollers for $3 that dance moms, pagent moms and cheerleaders like to use, so I picked them up. Just listed them for around $75, so we’ll see how quickly they sell (not a lot of money compared to the amounts J&R get for their stuff, but a lot for me!)

As so many have said before, it can become more difficult to sell “collectibles” now than in years past. When someone found something in the wild to add to their collection, they were so excited and would pay whatever price necessary to purchase it. Now, they hop on the internet and purchase the cheapest one in the best condition…the thrill of the hunt is no longer there. My neighbor just went into a care center and her six children were cleaning out the house to get it ready for sale. The mom was excited for the kids, grandkids and great-grandkids to pick from all of her treasures, but no one really wanted to take them (minimalists, not their memories, etc.) so much of it went to Goodwill (I wish I was here for that or I would have snatched a lot of it up, but I am a snowbird and wasn’t in town).
I decided to let my TRS Plus go this month. I am currently not interested in offering free returns and some of the other requirements to get TRS Plus for the small 10% discount. Now mind you, I am not “complaining” about the 10% over the 20%, it just doesn’t work for my model.
I opened a second account at the beginning of the year and have a Basic Store under another account. I initially opened it for things like postcards and other light items that I could ship without Delivery Confirmation so I didn’t screw up my TRS Plus on my other account, but now that the badge doesn’t matter to me, I decided to open a Starter Store for that account…except the eBay glitches still go on and all I get is “We will be back soon” when I try to sign up for a store. UGH!
I have decided to get through my hard goods death pile this summer. I have a corner of my basement with items from box lots, things neighbors have given me, etc. that I have to decide to list, donate or toss. When I get back to Phoenix, I will get back to the Goodwill Outlet “the bins” to add to my clothing inventory. It is so true to sell things that you enjoy…that’s why my hard goods pile is “piling up!”
It’s so frustrating to have to deal with less than truthful buyers. I have had only one in almost two years that I have been selling. I only have about 380 items listed. Mine was only about $20 and I had to decide if the emotional aggravation was worth the $20. I hate allowing buyers like that get away with it because it only reinforces that behavior for sellers to come, but my concern was disputing it with eBay and maybe having them rule in the buyers favor then I have a defect and a $20 defect wasn’t worth it for me. I wish there was a better system, but platforms like Amazon don’t even have a dispute resolution system like eBay does. I am hoping that eBay never moves to a more Amazon-like system.
I have a piece of art that I wanted to offer Smartpost. The listing template allows me to offer it, but when it goes live, it is never an option for the buyer. I heard there is a glitch that has been there for a long time that even though the item fits all of the Smartpost requirements (size, weight, etc) after about 100 inches in combined length and girth, eBay doesn’t show it as an option for the buyer. I called eBay several times and each of the reps couldn’t tell me why it wasn’t showing since they could see the template allowed me to offer it and it was within all of the specifications. The last rep asked me to delete it and relist it and see what happens in case there was some sort of glitch when I listed…I did that and it still doesn’t show up. I think like a lot of sellers, I just give up…I think the tech team should look at it (which is what I asked of the rep) but it seems to be a known problem for a while and still hasn’t been fixed. I guess they have more important fixes on their tech list!
I laughed so hard at the banter between Ryanne and Jay about “what made you think you could price it that high?” You guys are so cute together.
So maybe in my key words I will say Old World Persian fabric…that should cover it all! Thanks everyone!
Some reps are still telling sellers that first-class shipping is no longer available for 13-15.999 ounces. Facebook groups are burning up the fiber optic lines on this one! I haven’t sold a thing since the rate change on Sunday…I guess it may be a good thing with these uncertainties!
I think they are updating their shipping since last night…they have had a “we are having trouble” notice since late last night

15.999: $4.94The rates are going as of midnight. if your buyer paid for an 8 ounce package yesterday, if you wait to print your label tomorrow, your rate won’t be the $2.77 you are used to be a higher rate (I’m not as familiar with the new rates as I am the old rates, but it will be higher than $2.77). Print tonight and your rates will be the same happy rates you are used to! If they purchased Saturday, even with calculated shipping, they are paying the old rates, not the new ones.
Wow, that’s a lot more information than I thought they’d give. Jay, do you remember what episode you talked about it?
