There is a lot of good advice in this post.
I would just like to add that in term of the IRS 4-5k is small potatoes. You still will have to report your income and pay taxes – but don’t let it stress you out. Do your best to approximate your expenses and earnings (with the help of a tax professional) and don’t worry about it further. If you are offsetting the costs of your husbands spendiness you should be able to record enough expenses to offset any tax burden.
Just keep better records going forward.
No one likes paying taxes, but unless you are committing outright fraud no one is going “take the house or garnish your wages”.
I had a buyer ask to change their address (request came through Ebay messages).
I told the customer to update the address with Ebay. The customer complied but because they had already placed the order with me, the new address did not come through on my end.
I called Ebay to see if they could confirm that the new address was valid. I was told by the CSR that Ebay was unable to look at other peoples accounts. I was advised by the CSR to cancel the order, and ask the buyer to repurchase.
(Side note this was a total pain the bottom because I had sold the item under a promotion. If I canceled the order, I would have lost the 30% reduction in sale fees).
In this case I looked at the buyers feedback rating and decided to take the risk. Fortunately there was not a problem. However, if there had been a problem – Ebay would not have helped me.
That is the stuff that nightmares are made of…
Thank-you for investing the time in getting your money back. It helps all of us. The more sellers present a united front, the more it will force Ebay to address our concerns. This is the dark side of the “gig economy”. The people who do the actual work, are always saddle with the highest amount of risk. It’s b*llsh*t.
While the following technique may not apply to your situation, let me share something that I have found useful:
I never accept an offer without countering for 1 cent less.
If someone offers me $18.00 for an “AS IS” radio. I counter with an offer for 17.99 with a message that states “I agree to your price as long as you acknowledge that this item is sold, AS IS, cannot be returned, and you agree to pay immediately”.
While I am sure people can still open INADs and cause trouble, I do find this weeds out a high number of flakes (especially people who don’t pay).
11/05/2019 at 4:38 pm in reply to: There may be a major glitch when you resist unsold items … #70102I find if I end an item early, the item I ended shows up under the category “unsold”. This is different than “drafts”. If you relist an unsold item – I don’t think it automatically clears out of the “unsold cue”.
You really want to get angry… Try this one on.
A representative from the New Mexico Tax & Rev dept told me that while Ebay, Amazon (and all on line markets) are collecting state sales tax… They have not yet remitted the taxes collected back to the states!
The on-line retailers are holding onto the money in order to negotiate some sort of settlement on the sales tax due from previous years.
I am not a tax expert and don’t know if this applies only to New Mexico OR if the woman I was speaking to was mistaken.
Any tax experts out there who know the scoop?

Jay thats great unfortunately not wide enough. I don’t suppose you have something wider (or a duplicate)
Yeah it was for $1.50. But it is the principal of the matter!
Yes. All immature rants aside. I knew once Xmas came close again it would sell.
@bigsally I ended up finding tools boxes at an estate sale. I am going to save you as a seller and make sure to search your inventory next time I need something.
By the way, if you ware wondering “is there anything more fund than spending someone else’s money at an estate sale?” The answer is no. Nothing is more fun. I dropped $1,700.00 and filled a truck with miscellaneous gak.
I am normally an office guy, but occasionally they let me of my leash to shop in the wild. So much fun.
Makes sense to me too. I don’t understand why they are trying to turn themselves into Amazon. Amazon will always be better at being Amazon. Hopefully they will correct course and lean back into being the place to go for everything that ISN’T in the “Everything Store”.
@Old Dad – heading to an estate sale first thing in the a.m. thanks for the tip
#bigsally possibly interested in toolbox. I need to see how I do art the estate sale tomorrow. If I miss noon cut off we should still be okay…
@mickdog – I’ll take them both. Stand byHave them send it through Ebay messaging system. That is the best way to keep yourself protected. Important note – you can’t send PDF files through ebay Messages. The buyer will need to send you a JPEG. I do this often and it works great.
Understood – I will keep this discussion private.
I know who this is. She is a good person and very busy and probably made a mistake. I will see what I can do to have the negative feedback removed.
I think I even know which prop this is. Wooden Gun case I think?
TV and Motion Picture production is very rushed, and very stressful and people don’t always have time to read all the descriptions. Thats not an excuse but it’s a reality of doing business.
Let me see what I can do.
