Ludmilla,
So glad I was instrumental in getting you to this forum! This is a great community and I’ve learned a lot in the short time I’ve been here.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for the recommendation. For now, I’m holding on to the sconces, as these are really “me” and I may just put them in my own home for the time being.
I had issues with shipping a package with dimensions and that one darned listing keeps showing, even though, yesterday it didn’t. Today it does again. I was creating listings and it kept shutting down, and saying something to the effect “photo dimensions should be at least 500…” and then the draft lost all the photos I had uploaded. I had to keep trying to create the same listing, then-after I finally was able to list the item, all the drafts show up-but still no photos.
Mike, I appreciate all of your insight. I completely agree with all you’ve said. One minor correction, however, the phrase is “Hecho en Mexico” (made in Mexico). That being said, what are your thoughts on the frames only which are “Hecho en Mexico”? I have a collection of frames only and some are marked “Hecho en Mexico”. Some are better than others. Some are gilded. Some are wood.
I know there was some controversy over someone like Frida Kahlos’ image being sold on sites like Etsy done by artists all over. I don’t know if there is an answer to that. Frida and Diego did not have children together, so I do not know if there is an “estate”, or someone who would handle that. Also, in photography, I know there is a 50 year wait before something goes in to the public domain after the photographer dies, but I don’t know if the same is true of other artists work.
I remember there was a guy who Photoshopped images of people like Kanye, the Kardashians, Diego Rivera, etc then stuck the images on devotional candles and sold them on Etsy and Instagram. He went by the name of something like Jaymsie Waymsie (or the other way around). I wondered how long it would be before he got shut down. I guess he did because I don’t see his stuff anymore.
I am in awe of forgeries (I am a novice painter-self taught). My paintings are nothing to write home about. I just like the process and creating and making. I love watching documentaries about forgeries and forgers. I think they have a lot of nerve and talent-which is a dangerous combination-also what makes them do what they do. I’ve seen so many, I’m now on the the British forgers! These guys are good! Watching these shows has made me be a little more discriminate, but no match for Mike’s (MDC Galleries) abilities-to be sure!
Mike, do you have a blog, or are you on youtube? If not, do you have any recommendations for some good YouTuber’s who are in your area of expertise?
debitsandcredits, I too despise selling clothing for that very reason. It’s so difficult to decipher what will sell, what will not. I have a death pile of clothing and shoes that just sit there, because I dread listing them and who knows if they will sell. I feel your pain.
I have worked in the garment industry since I was 18 years old. I currently do clothing alterations. Back in the day, you would have names Like the song states: “Halston, Gucci, Fioruccci”. Now you have names like Anthropologie and under that blanket label, many other sub labels. It’s so complicated now.

Yea. It’s a lot to take in. Jay is correct. Trial and error. My tip is, grab clothing which speaks to you, or that you would wear. This way, if you get stuck with it, well, at least you can use it.
I’ve pasted some links which may (or may not) help you. I’m hoping they help someone.
Good luck!
For what it’s worth-my 2 cents. I was taken in by the title of this thread. I also felt sideswiped! I was like “WHAT? Hobby Lobby?? I used to shop quite a bit at hobby lobby. I’ve bought crafting glass, yarn, fabric, paint, etc. I would never think that Hobby Lobby was in competition with ebay. I agree with everything Mike at MDC Galleries said. To me, Hobby Lobby decor was just stuff you would by for, say, a party theme. Having a nautical themed party? Sure! Go to Hobby Lobby and pick up a couple of “Fishing this way” signs, or a cast iron mermaid sign. I would never think “hmm, let me see if I can flip this on ebay”. Or if I did think to flip it, I would think to flip it at a loss, not a gain. The stuff I buy, I buy to make a profit on. If I bought something at Hobby Lobby I would buy it, use it and sell for less than I paid just to get rid of it. No competition with ebay.
Okay, sorry guys! Just realized I posted in the wrong thread. UGH! Those newbies! 🙂
Has anyone used photography students as photographers? I bet they would be happy to take on the work and need the money. Just curious.
My head is spinning.
Thank you, Ryanne!

So I checked to see if it was magnetic…the only magnetic part of the sconces are the bases, or the concentric circular part of the sconces. The rest is not magnetic. I’m really torn between listing and using. I used to own a Victorian house, and these would have been beautiful and fit right in! Too bad I did not find these then.
Ryanne, you and Jay really have to move to Chicago! you would make out like a bandit here. I wish I could just shop all day, (wouldn’t we all?) but I can’t.

Antique Solid Brass Hand Holding Light Socket Sconce #63656Thanks for the reviews. I have a few things that came up on Worthpoint, but I’ll hang on until I find another source. I have plenty other things to list. I am always skeptical about these apps, and try to proceed with caution, as one can go broke trying to turn a profit.
Those are great returns! Minus the Gucci’s, but you’ll sell them eventually. Congrats!
I agree about lowering the price. I don’t know ebay, but I do know clothes. These do have a “cool factor” and are what people are wearing. But imho, I think ripping them where the darker patch is, and maybe at the knees would sell these. Sometimes I am amazed at how “distressed” is subjective, and how the more distressed, the more “cool” they are.
Fashion is a reflection of the current political climate. Think Hillary Clintons pantsuits (women in power), the pussybow (the me too movement), Rosie the Riveter (rolled up sleeves, and more masculine dress for the times taking on male dominated positions during WWII). I believe the ripped jean fad, is indicative of our current situation-holes in our democracy. And I’ll leave that right there.
