Number of items listed this week: 11 plus refreshed some listings with sell similarI was on vacation mode for a few days but happy with the sales. It definitely helps to list. I’m trying to see what’s ending and sell similar. Dropping prices if it’s really old or unexciting and making a couple other changes. I only get to that every 3-4 days though. Our toddler family guests just left so I need to get back to listing.
My son will be back from his exchange program on the 11th unless he stops at another city on the way back from Europe. If he does I might go to the live market for Mother’s Day weekend soft open. It looks like it picked up a bit last weekend. Not as glamorous as the LA monthlies, but you have to start somewhere. https://www.instagram.com/p/C07YbPhPf9w/
Quick PS went to a sad hoarder house estate sale. Recognized many thrift store tags. I DON’T want to be that lady so better get more things moving out.

After a few months of not really listing and getting my status downgraded from TRS due to OOS and a late scan, I have been doing better listing and Ebay is responding. I also started a 40% clearance sale on about 150 items. A few sold, but it maybe triggered some activity on non-sale items it seems? I’m also cutting better offers to some buyers who reach out. Is there a bulk way to drop your offer floor to a % on Ebay?
I’m getting very excited to debut at the live vintage pop up market. Target date is 6/1 but I may do a “soft open” if they advertise a mother’s day weekend event, which I suggested to the organizer. I have gathered tables and display items pretty expensively. I got a sturdy rolling rack from Uline instead of a cheapie as my Mother’s day gift. I’m going to do some clip sign general pricing but will need to tag a lot of items. Currently deciding what should be included. It’s been fun sourcing for the booth and I have some cool fabrics to use as tablecloths with a aqua/green/teal color scheme. In my mind, it’s glorious. Ha. As usual, I’m overthinking it all.
I’ve been looking through thrift clothing and man, it’s wiped out. Not a Levis in sight. It’s funny to see the nerdy 80s and old lady clothes that are left. It’s also sad to note that hardly anything on the racks is natural fibers.
I went yard saleing on Saturday and it was fun. Also did a couple of estate sales. When I was thrifting, it kept to about an amount that I could handle and even dig on my piles at times. The prices are pretty good at the yard and estate sales, but it opens up a lot of volume. Makes me think things over and realize I should raise my standards again on what I pick up.
I have not been listing on the District platforms and have some likes on my BIN but only 3 sales total. It seems like the live sellers do well there. I do think I’m getting the hang of what to list on those though. Kind of a bummer because the Crazy Lamp Lady stopped picking out favorite items and she used to pick a lot of mine so they got a lot more views that way.
Huge congrats to R&J for your success. I’m pleased you are still doing Ebay. I was thinking back to a favorite episode this week. The topic escapes me right now…
04/24/2024 at 10:06 am in reply to: Shipping discounts automatically applied to listings for some #102922@Jay. Yes and the timing is suspiciously right after the Mercari change. Ebay is already all in on squeezing the sellers so perhaps they are countering by trying to lower costs for buyers.
@Craig sorry to hear to get migraines. I only had a couple in my lifetime but they were hell. Good for you cleaning out. I’ve started doing the same. I put 150 items on 40% off, based on less exciting, time listed, and lack of good comps. It’s interesting that other non-sale items in the same category as the sales started immediately selling instead. Who knows Cassini secrets?
Gurley candles are good, but one of these were broken and they are fragile, so I put this on clearance and it sold. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335231811443 Found in the back of a pantry at an estate sale.
I was beginning to regret my Macys final clearance RA but happily this sold https://www.ebay.com/itm/235459881631Paid $7 I think. Brads Deals says Macys is still running clearance btw. Lots of toys, Christmas, and kids clothing.
One of the other things I noticed this week while organzing is that my Pottery Barn new item cardboard box is so beat up. This brand does really well for me on Ebay. Sometimes I am lucky enough to find PB in the package but it also sells pretty well used.
@Retro thanks for the clothing tips. I don’t ever find Carhartt but I know the kids are looking for them. Seems like vintage Levis and I just saw a great Reel on how to analyze the tags. Beyond that I’m starting to get a feel for what they like…
https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531906124 Following up on the scavenge of last week, I listed this on FB marketplace for a bit less. It would pay for half my entire online auction lot and I got it for $13 along with two other suitcases (one I’m keeping). Nobody in my house can get into a bag this small.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531890707 This also came inside a lucite drawer I got at the action for pennies.
I went to yard sales on Saturday. Things were overpriced at this one, but I got this item for $5. Always ask the younger guy vs. the older woman for a price. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531883418
This item came from an estate sale were I arrived late. It was at the bottom of an empty box. I don’t want to know what I missed in that box. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235524386716
Speaking of misses, the thrift store ladies were wondering why the person in front of me who snagged a huge lot of Ken Edwards pottery didn’t take these. Crap. Why do they have to mention? https://www.ebay.com/itm/335362843819 Not that I don’t have plenty of stuff.
I got several other incredible finds at the yard sales – a huge vintage fly Rio print in a gorgeous frame for $5, a vintage soda crate for my live sale display for $20, a tall Vietnamese nursery pot for $20 (to keep), a gorgeous rattan folding chair for the market for $5, a leather Patricia Nash bag for $10.
Bottom line there is so much sourcing available. However the vintage clothing is pretty tapped at the thrift store level for sure. I have a lot of stuff on hand to deal with so I’m wrapping my head around leveling up. Running a clearance sale on some less desirable Ebay stuff.
@Amatino yes I’m panicking. So much to do.
I wish I had seen your post a day before. Monday there was a huge fabric sale that wasn’t successful and they were doing $2 fill a paper grocery bag. Many. many fat quarters just lying there. I would have sent them to you! I went in looking for barkcloth but I guess someone had been on full price day and grabbed all of that.
04/23/2024 at 10:03 am in reply to: Shipping discounts automatically applied to listings for some #102906https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm2fOc6oCy4&t=1273s The Pure Hustle guys have a podcast on this. Not sure they touched on the fact that it only applies to certain sellers (without a store). In theory, it will affect us if we are competing against those sellers and they don’t opt out.
As a buyer, I would be interested in seeing the actual shipping cost before buying in the cases where the shipping seems too high on an item I really want. Sometimes I message them to add Fed Ex please, etc.
I’m wondering what the motivation on Ebay’s part was for the change? Maybe new and smaller sellers aren’t great at estimating and end up looking high? Experienced sellers would notice and have an uproar because they want the cushion? Or they just are trying to attract buyers and counter Mercari’s move, etc.
Great job Julie and Sharyn! I’ve veered very off course and purchased too much. With any luck though, I will unload some death pile items when live selling this summer.
21 listings for me. I’m hoping this workweek is really good and then I’m gone on a weekend trip. I need to clear all the stuff inside the house in particular because we have – ugh – a three toddler family coming to visit us for a few days the following week.
@Craig here’s another example I got listed this week. https://www.ebay.com/itm/235531888076 In an isle full of boring glass this is easy to spot due to the texture. The french brand Lalique does very well but I just avoid getting into the bigger items and haven’t found it yet. The signature is subtle.
Incidentally, AI made this description for me. It’s more concise than when I tried it before.
@Thriftshift thanks for sharing this honest post. I had a series of issues, including just a late USPS scan but also a couple of lost items and I’m down to above average after years of TRS. Sux. Interesting that taking away promoted is a punishment – and also interesting that you are still having sales though. Brave of you re Whatnot. Are you doing porch pick ups for FBM?
I’ve never seen those clocks in the wild. I’ve started following some pickers on Instagram and some estate sales in the heartland look great.
“Glowy glass” is a big Youtube trend. I’m wondering how long it will last. Silly to me because it only glows if you put it under a black light in a granny display cabinet. It’s interesting to see what catches on. I hope brass doesn’t go out soon because I have some to unload.
