I assume you’re SallysUniverse? If so, yes, your ball cap is showing up in search for “USS Nimitz hat cap” for me. In fact, both your sponsored listing and generic listing showed up.
The restriction must be for the future. Interesting that it is so specific regarding a 3 day restriction. I just had a listing with “Persian” in the title removed this week. (I know Iranian goods are prohibited but didn’t think the ‘bots would be smart enough to make the connection, especially in the Antiques category and with many hundreds of “Persian” items listed.)
My notice said: “Be sure that your current and future listings, including any items that are relisted automatically, follow these guidelines. If they don’t, they’ll be removed and your fees may not be refunded. It could also result in additional actions, including loss of buying and selling privileges on eBay.”

10/08/2019 at 1:52 pm in reply to: Anyone recognize this farm or industrial implement or tool? #68786The first and second photos depict the device closed and the third photo depicts it open. With the lever up, the end opposite the lever are jaws that open only about an inch. It has kind of an edge but dull as it is cast iron. Pushing down the lever (which locks) pinches the opening together. It does not seem to clamp tight enough nor is it sharp enough to cut much of anything. Being rough cast iron the edges don’t meet precisely.
It seems to me to be a device to perhaps hold heavy cloth or leather but being only about 10” wide it doesn’t seem to be very useful for that. Since the lever locks down, I don’t think it was for cutting anything.
Perhaps it’s a sheet metal brake? With the hinge where it is, one side of the bend would have to be pretty shallow but maybe it was a special made tool for a particular manufacturing process.
10/08/2019 at 8:07 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 431: Top 10+ Scavenger Life Lessons #68772I have bought and sold militaria for many years due to historical interest and my long military service makes it easy to identify things. There are people who are opposed to the military and anything having to do with it (including one girlfriend for a while during my Army days – that was interesting) but I don’t lose sleep over that.
But I generally have avoided WWII German militaria. One reason is that it has been so heavily reproduced for so many years that fakes are difficult to discern. Another reason is that Nazi and SS items have been reproduced in part to supply those attracted to them politically and I don’t want any part in feeding that. Anything WWII German that passes through my hands I would classify as generic soldier items.
I have not had any problems on eBay with selling those items since I have never listed anything that depicts the swastika, Hitler, or the Nazi party. Those three things either in photos or keywords appear to be what triggers the eBay takedown ‘bots, as John Miller of Popeye’s Postcards recently learned to his chagrin.
The signature looks to me like Ron or Don Beaumont.
A funny thing happened to me this Saturday. Even though I have plenty of inventory at the moment and didn’t want any more, my family talked me into going to an antiques flea market with them. In light of my protestations they promised they wouldn’t let me buy anything unless it was really worth it. We got separated while browsing and I stopped at one of these surly old guys who sells antique hardware and tools and such. No clothing or dishes so they just dump their boxes out on their tables and it looks like piles of junk. With this guy there is junk but there are hidden gems. I’ve seen him before and he knows what things are worth. It sounded like he was actually selling stuff really cheap that day, though, so I put together a little pile to buy. He wanted $10 for it which was cheap for what it was so I gave him the $10.
I was putting it all away in my backpack and he started packing up for the day. He was muttering to himself that he was done with the flea market, he was tired of all this crap, and he was going to sell online. He turned around to me with a box in his arms full of vintage spark plugs and said “do you want this?” It took me a minute and a little back and forth for me to realize he was just giving it to me so I took it. I kind of had my hands full and he pulls out a banana box and says “I’m going to make you a box”. He walked around his five or six tables and just started pulling random stuff and whole trays of things and throwing them in the box.
He filled the banana box and grabbed another banana box and starts filling that. Every once in a while he’d stop and show me something and have some comment like “look at that – I could get $20 for it but nobody wants it” and throw it in the box.
My wife comes by and said “what the hell are you doing” but at least she knew to whisper it in my ear. I said I don’t know but this guy just wants to give me stuff so I’m standing back and not bothering him. To her credit she didn’t say another word and my son totes the first box off to the car.
And the guy kept going. Three banana boxes, a medium moving box, and two large blue bins later the guy said ok that’s enough and shook my hand. I thanked him, wished him the best and walked off.
It’s one thing to buy some table lots at an auction and end up with boxes of stuff but this was a bit unexpected. I’ll just have to make some more room in the basement.

Original Category Collectibles : Advertising : Food & Beverage : Distillery : Merchandise & Memorabilia : Bottles, Decanters & JugsWas this the record you were looking at: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/dentons-patent-butterfly-tablet-x7-246312098 ? It sold for $439.31 on eBay UK in 2012.
This lot https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/early-1900s-world-butterfly-collection-denton went for $129.10 in 2007.
Absent the Denton reference, mounted moths in general do not seem to bring very much based on a search of recent solds. I usually don’t put much stock in older sales of antiques and collectibles so I’m not sure the above sales are very useful.
For things I’m worried might be worth thousands I may ask for an auction estimate from a reputable auctioneer, like Christie’s here:
https://www.christies.com/selling-services/auction-services/auction-estimates/overview/Awesome buy! Bar items and those types of pitchers were bread and butter for me in my days of selling at California flea markets.
Good info from Rick. Also Aftership or Boxoh can sometimes provide the foreign tracking that drops off from USPS and the eBay tracking link. Or find the website for the destination country’s national postal service and enter the tracking number there.
To keep items from getting stuck in customs I recommend to streamline and simplify the item description on the customs form. If they have to decipher the usual keyword-filled eBay item description in order to determine the import fees the package can get sidetracked and opened for inspection. And also watch out for words that may be red flags to customs. For example my sale of item “US Navy USS BENFOLD DDG 65 Authentic Challenge Coin Fight and Win” became “Coin, base metal, not legal tender” on the form and sailed through customs in South Korea.
The only issues I’ve had with direct foreign shipment are a couple times when the buyer didn’t receive notice that the package was waiting for them at their local post office for payment of import fees and pick up and asked me where it was.
09/26/2019 at 7:12 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Large duffel bag, Faribo blanket, TV trays, Harley boots, Catheters #68267I saw your boots come up and thought for a second “there’s something about them that looks a little strange…” then your hand came in the frame and “Whoa!” Also funny to watch Midge thinking “can I get in there and get a bite or will I get chomped?”
I’m headed out of town for a couple days so my what-sold post will have to wait. Maybe putting my store on extended handling time will trigger a bunch of sales like it did this past summer.
09/24/2019 at 6:34 am in reply to: I need help – Wrong Item Sent – Customer wants to pay still #68215Your instincts are correct that both of those thoughts are bad ideas. You could try sending him an invoice from the original listing. If that doesn’t work you could try calling eBay but unless you get an exceptional CSR you’ll likely get nowhere. If it were me, I’d tell the buyer thanks very much but there’s no way to do it.
