I have a large credenza I’m selling on eBay, local pickup only. A potential buyer has asked to come see it but I’m concerned about violating eBay rules by giving him my address.
Anyone dealt with this situation? EBay specifically calls out phone and email but not home address.
Thanks

I’m pretty sure that providing your address prior to the sale is against eBay policy. They don’t want the buyer coming to your house and paying cash, which would cut them out of their commission.
I believe the correct way is to have the buyer pay for the item, and then arrange for pickup. If they decide that they don’t want it, then you refund them their money.

Its tricky, but we have given out address through eBay messages when the buyer asks to see the item first. No issues. Its common that a local person wants to see the item before buying.
I think if some automated eBay warning came up, a real person at eBay would see our messages where we’re honestly just trying to make a sale. Hoping for better angels of our nature.

Typically in cases such as these, the buyer supplies me with contact info so we can talk.
We’re blocked from sending that info but they usually are not.

Good info Jay and Retro. So far I’ve been using Sharyn’s method of requiring payment but allowing an inspection. My listing says payment is required before arranging pickup and that I am happy to cancel the sale and provide a full refund if the buyer or their representative is dissatisfied upon inspection at the time of pickup and prior to preparing the item for removal. Otherwise, sale is final. I also say that I require pickup within 30 days of the original sale, having had problems with buyers assuming they could leave something with me for a long while. I would not allow that long but between my schedule, the buyer’s schedule, and Uship scheduling it can sometimes take several weeks.
Speaking of local pickup, has anyone used the eBay Proof of Delivery feature or know whether it has been rolled out? I recall hearing about it in April but nothing since then and recent local pickup buyers said they didn’t get any codes.

We bought a commercial fridge last week using Local Pickup. eBay let us print a receipt with a number code + QR Code. The seller entered it into eBay and finalized the sale after I picked it up.

Thanks! Just clueless buyers in my case I guess. I’ll push harder to get it from them next time.

I had one local pickup where they buyer had a code, and another where they didn’t. The one that did was a local pickup from the start, while the other one I added the local pickup option at the request of the buyer. I have been assuming that was the reason for one having it and not the other, but I don’t know for sure.

Thanks everyone for the input. I ended up having the buyer buy the item with payment pending inspection. Unfortunately, they didn’t take it in the end. After driving over an hour to see it they said it was too big for the space they had. I had measurements in the listing, but I guess they either didn’t pay attention or had some magical thinking going on. Hated losing that $1250 sale. It will sell eventually.

For a sale that big, you got to try. I’ve driven four hours to sell something for $500.
Ryanne started an instagram page of cool and/or cheap real estate in our area 🙂 https://www.instagram.com/lovelylurayrealestate/

@Jay – I took a look at this Instagram account. Quite awesome! Is she doing this to help out your local town? I mean, she hasn’t started working as a real estate agent or anything? I wouldn’t think so, but you two have such energy, I wouldn’t be totally surprised.
Do you know whether the businesses she is highlighting closed because of the pandemic, or were they already listed or in trouble beforehand?

Ryanne is just highlighting good and fun deals to hopefully attract cool people to live here. We’re mainly a retirement community because there’s few local jobs. BUT we think it could be a great place for younger people if they can work remotely. So cheap and beautiful.
Our downtown died in the late 90’s when Walmart moved into the outskirts of town. That’s where all the fast food and gas stations are now. So most of these buildings have sat empty for 20 years except for brief periods of housing junk shops etc.
