Retro: my guess would be that details on INAD returns would be in the Fall Seller Update.

Bob Kupbens is the Vice President for Seller and Marketplace Operations.
Adyen is partnering with eBay to manage payments, eBay isn’t buying them. So Adyen and eBay will be two separate companies. We won’t notice that they are two companies, as Adyen is just running the backend payment side the same way that Pitney Bowes handles all of the GSP shipping for eBay.

Now, that was a limit that worked for South Dakota, but that limit shouldn’t work for California or Texas, as those states are exponentially larger than South Dakota.
For now, just keep your ears open for what states are moving to so that we stay compliant.

AtomicStar: What were your thoughts on eBay Open overall?
Also, that is horrible on the returns. I’m hoping that it is a bad wave and not a trend. Very crazy! We are at a similar level of listings and haven’t really seen an increase in returns so far. We are up about .75% on returns, but nothing to that level.

Love the drive to get more listings up, especially going into Q4. Great investment!

A couple of squirrelly sales. While at the Open, we had an offer on the Sunshine Pets sign for $150, but before we could accept, the listing ended. After SixBit relisted the item, I contacted the buyer that made the offer and let them know that I will change the price on the item and they can just buy direct. So I go straight to eBay, change the price to $150. 5 minutes later, I see the sale. Then I see the total payment…$154.
Umm…this sign is 20 lbs and will be at least 36 x 24 x 16 to ship. $4 shipping?
I immediately called eBay and after having to convince them that this was obviously an error on their part that when I made the shipping change, that somehow a different Shipping Policy was put on the listing, then we got eBay to send us a $46 credit to cover the difference in shipping.
Then, after packing up 72 items this morning (in 3 hours!), I see that one of the first items we packed up has a “Suspicious Buyer” message on it. I called eBay, told them that this was packed up and ready to ship, and they said void and relist. Buyer was suspicious and had already left the site. So that was fun to find and take back off…
Vintage Treasures: Thanks a bunch! It was great meeting with you, and we are looking forward to seeing you again soon.
MyCottage: Sorry we didn’t have more time to get together!
I think many veteran sellers do that plan with eBay Open. After the first year, they spend more time in the Expo Hall talking with vendors, networking, and putting plans together to grow their businesses. The breakout sessions that were really useful this year were on sales tax, Google search, and $1M sellers. If you get a chance, watch those, especially the $1M sellers. One guy was very inspiring, doing $1M Gross, with a 20% net…by himself.
a New Orleans Girl: Ok, looking at your store now. Plus, the boss in this area (Veronica) is looking and talking with me as well.
First, I think a part of this is just summer. Summer is a slowdown for retailers everywhere, so there is always an issue there. Most of the items that I’m seeing that you are listing are not really related to summer, so this just isn’t the season. If you can add more summer type items (thinking what people need for the beach, the sun, vacations, etc.) then you can probably fill that hole.
Also, looking at your sales volume compared to your inventory, you are running at about a 3.3% Sell Thru Rate. That is about normal for this type of year with this type of merchandise. I see a lot of people at this level of sales.
The items that you have listed look good, but we would recommend that you always put your Brand Name as the first part of the title. All the eBay and Google search folks said the same thing. For most items, Brand is king. For items that don’t have a brand, it is really hard to sell them. No matter how cool they are, it is hard to reach a buyer when most buyers search by Brand. Check the eBay Open site when you can for when they will post the breakout sessions to watch. The Google one talked about this more in depth.
Regarding brands, I see three tiers in almost every category: Low, middle, and high. Low end you stay away from. As an example, Tommy Hilfiger and Nautica are good well known items, but it is damn hard to sell them for any profit. 100,000 other listings, all low and cheap, and buyers can get them at reasonable prices other places. High end is great! So a Brioni or Eton shirt is what you look for. You make great money on them…but they take a while to sell, because you are looking for the buyers that know the high end and are willing to pay more for it. Your middle tier is where you make your bread and butter. You can get reasonable profit for them, there is less competition than the low end, but in a price range where you can get more buyers. This keeps the cash flow coming in.
So I wouldn’t freak out at this point. If your goals are to keep growing your store and get consistent income, then keep looking for good brands that you like, keep listing and growing your store, and you either know that your STR will be lower and your consistent income will be provided by a higher inventory, or you can look for more items that will sell quicker with enough profit to make it worth your time.
Feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk more. TSATTERF@YAHOO.COM
Good luck!
PS – Veronica was wondering if you have thought about putting a lot of your nice pieces on Etsy, especially the pottery items. That may be a solid target market for those items.
