Welcome to you both!
06/01/2018 at 7:22 am in reply to: Selling my vintage stuff on Etsy to diversify and pay less fees…Worth it or no #41452MileHigh: I can confirm what a lot of folks say above. It is more for vintage items, with nicer buyers, and is more of an antique store feel. Much slower though. We cross post certain items onto Etsy and look for extra sales there, but everything goes on eBay first.
MileHigh: We find that items are slow there as well. Just have to wait.
Where are you located? We are in Broomfield.
Welcome to both of you!
I’m betting that eBay sees these as two separate steps. The sale is one transaction that has its’ own life and history. The shipping label is a separate transaction. The return is processed against the sale, not the shipment.
Imagine if someone purchased two items, they were combined onto one shipment, and they only wanted to return one of the items.
Things can get messy sometimes…

Or just take a break…
For us, it is random. Sometimes 30 days, sometimes less. I just let them sit until the buyer ships back or EBay closes.
05/31/2018 at 3:48 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 362: Scavengers Are Always Prepared To Clean Out A Basement #41392Mark: I would call eBay back on those two points. They are completely opposite of what I have read and heard about how this works.
My bet is that he is mistaken. Free Returns would need to be on a listing to get the discount on that listing. And the seller pays for Return Shipping.
I would love an eBay Plus that would rival Amazon Prime. For sellers that comply, that could be a big boost.
We already run our business like this anyway, with Same Day Shipping up to 2PM. We could go Free Shipping if that would help. The increase in STR would probably be worth it.
The key would be if they added a free NetFlix or HULU subscription with eBay Plus. Some of the other benefits of Amazon Prime like Music, Video, etc. make the cost worth it for some.
Atomic: That may be true, but if the buyer sends both items back, you can refund both items and that will close both returns, and the shipping was only for one label.
We haven’t had this experience yet.
Sharyn, I like your solution. Put in one box with one label, do not use the other label. You won’t be charged if it isn’t used.
Good news is…this should be a unique situation. Returns are rare, and returns of multiple items would be even rarer…
I haven’t forced any returns to be closed. We did have a return on a shirt (didn’t fit) that the buyer never shipped back. After about 10 days, eBay closed it on their own.
Sitting on one right now. Buyer requested and we approved on 5/22. Still hasn’t shipped. Just waiting on it since the ball is in their court.
I love to forage. We do Dandelion greens, Mallow, and Lambs Quarters in salads. I have tried Curly Dock, but still a bit bitter. I like to saute Yucca Leaves as well. They are great with eggs.
Our mindset is on what your time is worth. I would spend an a lot more time and be a lot more particular on an item that is of high value. We have a steel engraving that is listed for about $2k. I spent a lot of time researching that. It was worth it.
Clothes? Listing is about 6 min, all in. Photos would be 3 min. Not worth more unless it is a high value suit.
Also, what is your driving force for selling? If you enjoy the research, the history, and the long descriptions, and this isn’t your main source of income, then you may not have to change. All in what you want. Veronica and I do this for a living, so clothing is a high volume item we want to move quickly, so we created a process to get that done quick. Case in point. We listed 60 items yesterday in SixBit so that we had enough for our photographer. I did 40 items from 11am to 5pm. For those items, speed is of the essence.
I will add that as others have pointed out, very long descriptions may be tiring for buyers to comb through. Get their attention and don’t wear them out. In fact, I seem to remember that about a year ago eBay recommended short descriptions for how they were changing some of their programming.

We have a symbiotic relationship with the world. Like Jay said…we clean up what others left behind. No one is harmed. We take what they don’t want, and sell to those that want.
Win, win, win…
Symbiotes…
