Total items in store: 350
Items sold: 22
Total sales: $236
COGS: $24.52
Returns: 0
Money spent on new items: $80Sales this week were lousy. :/
Saturday’s auction was a bust. It was the first time I have walked in, said “Nope”, and walked out without even bothering to register for a number. All low quality junky stuff. I hit up some garage sales and thrifts instead. There’s another auction next week, so hopefully that will be better.

That’s a good idea. I will call ebay tomorrow, and see what they have to say. At the very least, it’s knowledge gained.
Honestly, I feel bad for this guy’s buyers, because if he’s done it to me, he’s done it many times before. He has over 8,000 feedback. It’s dishonest and a deliberate misrepresentation of his items, for no reason other than he can’t be bothered to photograph his own items. If I buy something on ebay, I expect that the item pictured is the item I am receiving, not a picture of someone else’s stuff.
Since this guy is using my photo as his primary picture, (on not one, but 2 of his listings!), I decided I would also use the same photo as my primary picture for my listing. When buyer’s search for the panels, they’ll see the same photo 3 times now. No reason not to use my photo front and center. What’s he going to do, complain to ebay?
This finally happened to me, with someone stealing a photo of my item. An item that I am holding in the picture! It was taken in my back yard, and I can see part of my tattoo in the picture, for eff’s sake.
It’s an utterly stupid item to steal a picture of: a glass replacement chandelier panel.
I don’t think it would bother me so much if it wasn’t for the fact that my hand is in the picture.
I wrote the seller, and requested they delete my photo. I expect I’ll be getting a hearty “Up yours” in response, even though I was civil.
Honestly, some people are so freakin’ lazy.
02/27/2017 at 4:44 pm in reply to: What kind of margins to look for with intent to sell eBay mostly? #13472I try for 10-15% COGS, but there are some things that don’t fit that formula. Example: a pair of new, steel toe work boots I bought for $20 that should sell for $100, and a purse I bought for $15 that sold for $50. Higher COGS, but worth it because of higher selling price.
Buying something for $1 and selling for $5? Not worth it. Buying for $10, and selling for $50? Worth it, IMO.
I had a bin full of doilies, dresser scarves, etc. I picked out a few really nice ones to sell individually, put all the others in a lot, and it almost all sold within a month. I think I have one doily left, and that’s it! Glad to see that stuff go!

The first half of February was great for me, but the last 10 days have been terrible. It’s hard to get motivated to list when almost nothing is selling. You are right, however; it’s statistics. I need to increase the number of items I am offering for sale.
02/26/2017 at 4:04 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 298: The Scavengers and The Collectors, A Love Story #13372I have a couple of others, done by “unknown” artists. Both are harbor scenes, one from the Grand Hotel in Taipei in 1965, the other the view from a hotel in Hong Kong in 1976. I should probably list them, because they are so awesome, but I kind of want to keep them! I’ve made a little collection of watercolors I have found at Goodwill. Maybe I’ll put a crazy high price on them, and see what happens. 🙂
02/26/2017 at 1:30 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 298: The Scavengers and The Collectors, A Love Story #13319Just a charming little watercolor I picked up today. It was done by a local artist when she was only 17 years old. She died a few years ago, at the age of 93!
The facebook groups by me are pretty stale. It is all the same sort of merchandise: kids clothes, fake Coach purses, truck rims, old sofas and appliances.
Facebook “Marketplace” vendors seem to be the same quality as Groupon vendors. Liposuction, tanning salons, massages, paint your own pottery places, lasik, etc.
Totally not worth it.
02/23/2017 at 10:16 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 298: The Scavengers and The Collectors, A Love Story #13210Steven, I think your artwork was done with either oil or chalk pastels.
02/21/2017 at 12:29 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 298: The Scavengers and The Collectors, A Love Story #12964Yes, expect to spend the whole day, (or a big chunk of it), at an auction. Don’t give up on auctions! That is where the real money is. The first auction I went to, I spent about $80 and filled my car. I made $3000 off that $80.
Yes, there will be times you bid on things you want, and don’t get them. Sometimes you are bidding against other resellers, and sometimes you are bidding against collectors, who do not care how much money they have to spend to get what they want. Sometimes you spend all day at an auction, and don’t spend a dime, because either the prices were too high, or the quality just isn’t there. It’s a bummer, but you move on, because there is no shortage of “stuff” in this country.
Don’t look now, but I am starting to run out of stuff to list! I am down to 4 piles of stuff: a box of glass photo negatives, a pile of Dell server parts, parts from my old dishwasher, and a pile of random “other” stuff, which is some of my son’s old toys, a few shirts, a cast iron pan that needs reseasoning, vacuum cleaner parts, a queen size bedspread, etc.
This is truly the stuff I have been dreading, because it will be tedious to clean and list.
I really appreciate this challenge, Christine! I got a lot of stuff listed, (and sold!), and it has made me think about the types of things I buy. I definitely am more selective now, because I dont want to deal with piles of questionable stuff again.
Dang, I *just* threw away a pair of old, ratty Converse, too.
