Steve – I’ve heard a few people on the forum mention a recent eBay glitch where the buyer gets free shipping even though the listing wasn’t set up that way. You should call eBay and complain. They may refund the shipping cost.
Lots of lower cost items have sold in the past two weeks.
After all the reel to reel tapes Steve has sold, I thought this one would go quickly, but it took a few years. I got it for free, and it sold for $15. Johnny Mathis is still alive at 85 years of age and tours when there isn’t a major global pandemic going on.

I like esoteric technical books that have appeal to only a small segment of the population. This is a manual on concrete published by a government agency in 1963. I paid about $2, and it sold for $14. Not a huge ROI, but I like this sort of thing.

These are designer made mini bride and groom teddy bears from an auction lot I purchased about two years ago. I paid less than $1, and they sold for $46 to Shop Airlines, a forwarding company for people in Japan who don’t want to buy directly off eBay.

I recently purchased a Rummikub set in an online auction. When I got it home, I found one tile missing and two of the stands were messed up. No problem, I’ll sell it piece by piece. A lady purchased all my 2’s and the two jokers, which added up to $11.50. She wants to make 2020 ornaments out of the tiles. She will have to find more jokers from other sellers. I purchased the game with a chess set and a few other items for $3 ish.

A few weeks ago, I purchased an online lot of kitchen stuff for a $6 bid. Ends up the stuff I thought would be good was just OK, and the hidden gems are what is making it special (including a Cutco knife that I’m keeping). I almost put these ice tongs that look like just curved pieces of metal into the donate pile, but I know to look up the inscriptions first. It was made by some Danish muckety muck MCM designer in the 1960s. I have two, and the first one sold full price at $20.

I sold this organic cleaning pack for $28, which also came from that purchase.

Last, but not least, my highest sale of the last two weeks is a rare book for full price of $59; “Newton’s Laws are Full of Flaws”. I got it for free, and it sold through the GSP to a UK buyer.
11/19/2020 at 10:21 am in reply to: Anyone on Long Island (suffolk County) that would like these plates? #83560I’m not too far away in NJ, but I don’t have any reason to head out to Long Island. I don’t think I’ve been there for over 15 years.
11/17/2020 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 488: Remember When Life Was Boring? #83508Maybe you should report the buyer to the USPS?
If he shorts you, you can call eBay and complain. They will cover the difference. (Also, inform them that you’ve reported it to the USPS).
11/16/2020 at 1:43 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 488: Remember When Life Was Boring? #83484Yes, I have heard that they are one of the companies that don’t like to see their products resold. I’m sure that they are like any of these companies that use the VERO program where it depends if they have someone at a low enough pay grade to look around for violations. If they don’t have anyone, then you can get away with selling their products.
If I had a large lot of Cutco knives and I didn’t want all of them, I might think about seeing if I could get away with it.
11/16/2020 at 11:39 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 488: Remember When Life Was Boring? #83481Over the years, I’ve learned about Cutco knives from this podcast. A few weekends ago, I purchased a large lot of kitchen stuff. It included a Cutco knife that had nicks in the blade and wasn’t sharp. I went to the Cutco website and arranged to ship the knife to their NY facility. On Friday, I received back a brandy new replacement knife worth $76 per their catalog! This will be our second Cutco utility knife that I have bought thrifting. I won’t be selling it, even though we have very nice Henkel knives from our wedding. Selling could possibly result in a VERO anyway.

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $104.23
Number of items listed this week: 26I thought I had a slow week, but I sold a decent number of items. Most were low dollar, so the sales were just OK. As discussed in this week’s podcast, I’m sure that the political climate and possible future lockdowns are part of the cause.
While the sales have been slow, I’ve found more opportunities for sourcing compared to this time in previous years. I’m way overstocked with unlisted inventory (so much crap in the garage to go through), but I’ve got to take advantage while the opportunities are there.
I listed 26. These were all jewelry for the one family friend that I do commissions for. I took the photos in 2018, but ended up not listing them at the time. Long story. Anyway, they all meet the November challenge.
I did some significant sourcing last week with online auction pickups on both Saturday and Sunday. I’ve got to focus on getting these listed rather than continuing with smaller jewelry items, so I’m not sure whether I’ll be listing many more items meeting the November challenge.
I agree. The craziness and uncertainty has definitely affected sales. Much different compared to the the first half of the year where people were getting incentive checks and needed a place to shop.
On the other hand, I usually slow down or stop sourcing in the fourth quarter, but I have pickups from two different online auctions this weekend, and I’m thinking of going to an outside auction tomorrow. Lots of good deals in the months before Christmas, which never happens.
11/13/2020 at 1:40 pm in reply to: “Your pending payouts are not enough for this transaction.” #83406When you first sell something, eBay puts a hold on the payment for some period of time.
You should have a second method in your account to buy labels when you don’t have enough in pending payouts; like a credit card or PayPal.
11/13/2020 at 9:55 am in reply to: Listing Photos Reverting To Original Pre-Edited Condition & More. #83404I haven’t noticed any older listings reverting back to the unedited photos, but I haven’t really checked either. However, I have recently been creating similar listings for jewelry. When I take the latest one and sell similar, the new listing reverts the photos to the unedited versions. I’m just deleting them and putting in new ones, but I notice the change.
I’ve noticed a bunch of annoying glitches recently. For instance, if I have a draft, and I go to make a copy of the draft, I get an error message and the new one doesn’t show up. All I have to do is refresh the page, and there it is with no issues.
Fourth quarter seems to be eBay’s favorite time to mess with the software.
Just an idea, but perhaps you should try to re-open your old PayPal account with the old email address. Maybe you would find the money there?
I should say that I agree with junque-redux, you should consider uses for your own household. You probably wouldn’t get caught selling it on eBay, but why take the risk?
And I briefly considered getting Lasik over ten years ago because I accidentally put the dependent care amount in the health care account and vice versa! I begged and submitted several requests, and my company finally fixed that for me!
Health savings accounts are money taken out of your paycheck before taxes, and you have to use it for medical expenses. Because it is pretax money, the deal is that you have to use it before the end of the year.
kaninekleenup – My uncle told me that during the pandemic he had an issue obtaining a certain type of over the counter pain relief medication. It was one of those extra strength Advil or Tylenol, maybe for migraines. I don’t remember the details, but he said it was selling for outrageous prices on eBay. Maybe you can’t get those prices now, but you probably could still do well. I think that you can sell over the counter medicine that isn’t open, but google that to make sure.
The other options I can think of are knee braces, humidifiers, glucose testers, and so forth if those are allowed by your spending account. Then maybe asthma related products because of the breathing issues with COVID.
I always thought “toile” was pronounced “twoy-lee” rhyming with doily, but dictionary.com says “twahl”. (click on the speaker symbol):

There is a clean-out company in my town called “Do Not Throw It Away”. They will come and charge you to take stuff away, but it depends on the items you have “We price by item not by volume because your belongings have value.”. What I understand is, if you have sellable items, they will charge you less. So, if someone wants to clean out a house and doesn’t want to bother with a sale, then they will come, charge you to clean it out, and then sell the stuff.
Anyway, OK week for me. The more valuable items were on commission, so the COGS are a bit high.

While I didn’t really have anything specific for the November challenge, I did list a picture frame decorated with roses. That should count.
Last night, I gathered more of the jewelry I have on consignment. That should do well towards the challenge.
I’ve been buying bubblewrap from ghalys.com. I get the 700 ft length in the 12″ small bubble. They are the cheapest I’ve found anywhere, and I’ve had no problems with the product.
Have you tried them, and what are the issues you are having?
