Yep, this is a big issue and ebay doesn’t care. You are expected to refund within 2 days no matter what.
My advice is to message your buyer, explain the situation, and advise them to NOT contact ebay.
I was on chat with ebay about this issue this weekend as I had two returns that opened shortly after going to managed payments.
I contacted both customers and asked them to be patient as I worked with ebay to figure it out.
On return that showed up first, ebay put a 3 day hold on the return. Then the rep sent me an email with “instructions” on how to refund the buyer. They told me to directly send the customer paypal funds, document the transaction, and send proof to a provided ebay email address.
That’s great….but ebay and paypal BLOCK the actual email address of buyers!!! I literally couldn’t do this. So next I sent funds from my bank account to my paypal account. After I did this I got a message that it would take 4-5 business days before the funds were available to use.
The day after I did this ebay closed the return and refunded the buyer in full (should have not refunded shipping costs due to return reason). Ironically ebay had no problem auto debiting my payment method to get THEIR money back. I argued to no avail with ebay – they said it wasn’t able to be appealed.
I’ve again messaged the other return buyer and requested they don’t escalate the return and that I’ll refund them as soon as the money shows up in paypal. I transferred the money last Tursday morning and it STILL isn’t available.
So long story short: You are basically screwed with any return that was purchased prior to managed payments implementation. It will be impossible to get the money back into your paypal account quick enough to avoid issues. Your only option is to clearly communicate with the buyer and hope they don’t go ahead and escalate the case after 2 days.

I finally was able to spend some time cleaning/organizing my eBay space after the home renovations. I’m back on the listing train baby!
Yesterday at the local goodwill they had a TON of sealed new D&D style game sets. All priced cheap. I bought all of them. Nothing extremely sought after or valuable, but will average $30-40 an item.
This week I want to really start cranking out the listings. I hope to hit 100 new listings come reporting time next week.
I wish ebay would acquire a book keeping software and make it a tool for store owners. That would be a great perk.
Godaddy’s response was literally “we just report whatever they give us”. Like they don’t have a clue nor care. They put the onus on me to magically hash it all out with ebay if I want it fixed.
I got dinged the other day for an item I sent 1st class on pirate ship. USPS claimed I actually sent a flat rate envelope. This was a video game sent in a small ebay padded mailer that weighed 3 oz. I have no idea how they could make such a gross mistake.
Hopefully this is not part of the solution – randomly overcharging people to see what they get away with.

Yesterday we had our refinance appraisal. We used that as motivation the last 2 weeks to hardcore do work to our house so it looked its best for the appraisal. I am TIRED! TONS of painting, trim, repairs, cleaning, etc. I took a week of vacation from my day job just to get this work done.
Now it is done and our house looks amazing. I’m gonna take a week or two to reorganize my ebay space that I wrecked during this process and get back on the listing train.
Numbers for the week weren’t going well but I had two $100+ sales this weekend that saved the week.
Also of note, this past weekend was the annual neighborhood yardsale. We took a break from work to hit the sales. There were SOOOO MANY yard sales! I was tired of them by the time we were done. I was able to get a bunch of great stuff. Yard sales are where I get my best items for my store – the good stuff rarely hits the floors at thrift stores anymore.
Ugh…what a mess. I also had to create a second ebay link to bring in new data.
The GSP international shipping costs is a major issue. Pitney Bowes is also listed as the customer for the original sale as well.
The ebay item title on sales and fees needs to be rectified.
I’ve reported all the issues I see to godaddy.
How disappointing… they’ve had MONTHS to work the bugs out and it appears they did nothing at all this whole time.

I was told it may be September before we can close, but maybe it will be sooner since the Appraisal didn’t take as long as expected to schedule.
Yeah the way I understand it is that they assign a form of a multiplier to the sq footage based on the quality of the place. It could also affect the comps chosen. In our case we have 5 kids and they routinely ransack the place – dings in walls, drawings on the walls, etc. We also had a couch that tore up the wall in the living room where it touched the wall.
In my experience, appraisals can be a mixed bag. In my old house I had to refinance in order to maintain two mortgages until sale when we moved. The appraiser did a BS drive-by appraisal and chose incorrect comps. Literally didn’t even get out of his car. I was PISSED and had to issue a formal complaint. He had to do it over.

A snapshot of how little listing I’ve done the last few months: On April 26 I had 1578 items in my store. Today I have 1300. I’ve been on cruise control since then, but what an amazing cruise control it’s been! Amazing that an $877 week can be considered a disappointment.
We have an appraisal of our home on Thursday for our refinance. We made the impromptu decision on Friday to blitzkrieg our house with improvements before the appraisal – stuff we’ve been putting off for years. I’ve installed lights, planted plants, moving/installing cabinets, and we’re repainting ALL of the common areas of the house.
It’s ton of work in a very short time frame. It will feel real good to have it all done! Will it have an affect on appraisal – don’t know don’t care. What’s important is I needed that hard short duration deadline to get in the zone and get alot of work done. I’m the type of person who best performs under pressure at the finish line. It’s a blessing and a curse. I don’t do well with long term project timelines…
Anyways, highlight sale of the week was some digital time keepers and software. Bought it all for $20 at the government surplus place locally a few months back. Sold for $200. That place had sky high prices on everything so I made it my personal mission that day to find the “diamond in the rough” that they overlooked – these time keepers were it. I love how I can find awesome stuff that sells for good money pretty much anywhere I go.

When the numbers all make sense and the flip time is that short, the COGS really don’t matter.
Well this is disheartening. I was hoping I could go to direct card payments once in managed payments. I do the paypal clearout trick currently, but the way paypal reports the transaction to my credit card I’m not getting full points for shipping transactions.
Things are rapidly changing for the better at ebay in the CSR realm. The new chat function is excellent. They even send you a transcript of the chat after you are done for your records.
The feedback removal tool is pretty good.
I firmly believe the new leadership team is actively trying to become more seller friendly.
