Number of items listed: 28Another decent week. I’ve been listing patches and costume jewelry that I bought in lots. I sold enough already to cover the cost of the lots but it’s going to be a long time before enough sell to really make it profitable. The lots of smalls are definitely a long tail game, but they don’t take up a lot of storage space so that’s nice.

Number of items listed this week: 30Couldn’t live up to last weeks sales, but that wasn’t a surprise. I think my favorite sale this week was a parted out nerf gun. I actually sold it a couple weeks ago as a functioning gun and then realized it was broken before I shipped it (thankfully), so I ended up cancelling that order. Instead of junking it, I decided I would dismantle it and sell it as a parts lot instead. It sold this week and I got more money for it than I did as a functioning gun. 🙂 Probably not really worth the time, but it’s fun messing around with Nerf and it rescued an otherwise bad buy.

Unfortunately I think my best sale is coming back although it’s not officially a return yet. But the buyer messaged me and asked if he could return to the PO Box on my return address so even though a return request hasn’t been started I’m expecting I’ll get it back this week. But my second best sale was actually my favorite. I got a lot of Hello Kitty backpack clip-ons and I listed them as 3 separate quantity listings, 1 for each color variation I wanted for $8 each. The buyer messaged me and asked if I’d make him a deal if he bought all of them. So we finally settled on $150 with free shipping and he took them all. For a 24 hour flip on a $22 lot I was stoked, I imagine I would have still been trying to sell through those this time next year otherwise and I’d rather have the money to buy more inventory right now. So even with the likely return it was a good week.
Week of Oct 18 – 24
Total Items in Store: 140
Items Sold: 9
Cost of Items Sold: $29
Total Sales: $148.91
Highest Price Sold: $39.99 (a tie between a Canon Point & Shoot camera and Wario World GameCube game)
Average price: $16.55
Returns: 1 (still waiting for it to actually be returned so we’ll see what happens)
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 16Most of what I sold this week was relatively low dollar video games. I was shocked to see how much you can get for a point & shoot film camera, and mine was on the low end because it was untested. The return was for a necklace the buyer ended up not liking, so they’re paying for the return shipping. Waiting to see if they actually follow through before issuing the refund. I think last week someone mentioned the chosen shipping method was defaulting to something different and I’ve been seeing that this week too. A lot of my stuff is setup with calculated shipping via First Class and those have been popping up with Priority Shipping preselected when I go to print the label even though it shows the buyer selected First Class.

Number of items listed this week: 40How do other people handle assigning COGs when they buy lots? In the past I’ve just split the cost between how ever many items I list evenly over whatever I paid for the lot. But lately I’ve bought a few lots for pretty good money and all the value was basically in one item so I’m assigning like 95% of the cost to that one item and then splitting evenly among whatever is left. If I split evenly, I’d show a loss for most items except the one big ticket item. Accounting aside, I’m having fun sorting through lots of video games, jewelry, and ephemera.
Health issues. It’s the same reason I’m doing online sourcing. Going out to source with the current state of the world isn’t the smartest idea for me.

Number of items listed this week: 27This is my first time posting my numbers. I’m sort of in rebuilding mode for my eBay listings since I’ve just started selling online again after being on hiatus for about 6 months. So I thought it would be fun to join the forum and track my progress here after years of listening to the podcast. I’m also changing up how I source and am pretty much limited to online auctions for now. So I don’t think I’ll ever get the margins Jay and Ryanne do or what I used to get sourcing from in-person auctions, but it’ll be a fun experiment.
Hey Jay,
Business was good for a few years. Gradually we shifted focus to smaller stuff and I think the market also changed as the economy improved since we started near the bottom of the recession. We also noticed that stuff started taking longer to sell, which I think was largely a result of Craigslist’s market share around here getting eaten into by Facebook and the other local selling apps like OfferUp and LetGo that we never moved onto. If we started over again now, we would definitely have to make use of Facebook. I wouldn’t say we made a lot of money but for a part time gig, it did pretty well.
