Hey all! I love Mad Max vs Star Trek… this resonates very deeply with me. I love the positive perspective of the Star Trek lens, and I love that it’s being talked about! Sometimes it’s easier to find common ground among the negative, and that’s certainly part of human nature, but it’s not the healthiest (or the most fun, ha!).
In any case, it’s been a WILD time lately! I have been terrible about getting around to posting on the forum, mostly because I’ve been so stinking busy! October was my biggest month yet on eBay, and I was shipping and sourcing like crazy. It’s been great, even if a bit exhausting. Oh, and getting the last few days of items packed and shipped was a little extra challenging since our power was out for three days up here in north GA (finally restored last night, thank goodness!).
On top of all of that, my book finally came out yesterday! Hooray! It’s about my transition from running my private therapy practice to full time selling on eBay and the why and how of said transition. The goal is just to give an example of my own personal experience with this, much like the Scavenger Life Podcast has served me on my own journey! It’s called “Miscellaneous” by Anna Packer and is available on Amazon. Hooray for finishing a big project!
I’m just under 8k active listings right now, and I’m trying to hit 10k by the end of the year, so it’s probably still going to be crazy town for a while if I want to reach my goals. Probably going to be venturing into additional storage (not at my house) for the first time at some point this month. Even so, I am going to try to be better about posting my numbers every week and participating more on the forum. I have been a mostly silent member of this community for years, but I love and appreciate it so much that I want to contribute value as much as possible. I certainly have received tons of value just being a passive member for so long! Hope everybody (and their stores) are going strong this week!
PS I am struggling at the moment with getting my numbers posted without weird formatting issues… I will comment on this with my numbers momentarily. Standby!

@annaesthetic23 – I just rented storage space for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was actually pretty fun to have some space to play with after playing tetris with the storage around my house for the last 5 years. I got a 10×10 storage space but I think I’m going to downgrade to a 5×10 because I don’t need as much space as I thought and it’s quite expensive here.
-
11/03/2020 at 3:36 pm #83154
That is very interesting! I love Tetris, but you’re right on the money– it gets tiring playing every time you have new stuff coming in or sold stuff going out! Ha! I don’t know how good I am at estimating spatial needs, but I think a little less Tetris is in the cards for me, and soon. Somehow I’ve kept adding and adding to my garage when I thought I’d surely max out at 4k items… and yet here we are rounding the corner to 8k! In part, that’s because I’ve been sourcing a lot more small collectibles and jewelry by purchasing big lots online since quarantine first started. It’s a little more lower dollar items than I prefer, but it has definitely resulted in fitting 8k items into my garage setup.
I am about to help friend totally eliminate a jam packed 10×20 storage unit from her life (and estate clean out she did on her own) and will be consigning many of those items in my store… and they are mostly not palm-of-the-hand kind of items. I think that’s what’s going to push me to get a unit myself, because I suspect we might be listing up to half of what is in hers. I’m hoping with some careful organization I can get a lot into one and still keep everything fairly accessible… I’d love to keep growing my inventory AND move some of the stuff out of my garage if I’m going to be maintaining an external unit from now on! Time will tell, indeed! That’s happening this week, so I’ll be sure to report back as this thing unfolds!
Just curious, do you think in the future you’d build back up to needing a 10×10 space, or are you currently content with your baseline inventory number?

Anna, the book sounds interesting. Put it on ebay and I’ll buy a copy!

I certainly will — I’m waiting on a few copies to have on hand! Thanks 🙂

OK, let us know when you have them available. Thanks!

Good news! I finally got in my copies and my book is now listed on eBay! It’s so meta. I listed it in the same fashion as nearly all of my other listings, including a best offer option. It’s kind of my way of doing pay-what-you-want for my fellow scavengers! Cheers!
-
11/14/2020 at 5:00 pm #83420
Hi Anna! A big Thank You for the signed copy of the book, and the enclosed note— I read it the same day it arrived (yesterday) and thoroughly enjoyed it! I’m sure some others here ordered it, so I don’t want to give too much away …but I must say, the better half and I are already referring to offers we get as “offertunities! LOL I really liked that the book is not just a “how to”, but also about your personal journey. And that you make very clear that ebay is a viable way to generate income, but isn’t a Get Rich Quick kind of thing. I’ll say no more, cause I don’t want to spoil it foe the others…
So, when will Jay and Ryanne be interviewing you for the podcast? (Hint, hint….)
And, of course, Griff should interview you for the ebay for business podcast, too….
-
11/14/2020 at 8:42 pm #83422
My pleasure! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Also, LOL about “offertunities…” my husband will be so thrilled to hear that term is being adopted haha! I learned most of what I do from this very community, and something I love so much about it is hearing people’s own personal experiences and applications of different methods/logistics/philosophy related to what we do. Thanks for the glowing review! It means a lot to me!!

11/14/2020 at 9:25 pm #83423
Well, your book really resonated with me, and I think it will for a lot of other people, too. And once I get a little extra time, I’m going to go check out your songs….I’m curious about your reference to writing plays…..have you had any produced? I’ve done a fair bit of Community Theater over the years, and have some friends who’ve written plays and short films…

I just bought a copy from you on ebay and I am looking forward to reading it.

Numbers for October 2020. eBay store: Steve-List
Total Sales: $1436.80
Highest Price sold: $95 – Restaurant Ware Ball Pitcher / $133 – 3 Garden Gnomes
Average Price Sold: $25.20
Cost of Items sold: $176.84 / average cost: 3.10
Spent on new inventory: $478
Number of items listed: 62
I have had very uneven sales for October, I would go 2-3 days with no sales and then I would get a day with a burst of sales which seemed to be the pattern for the whole month.
My new inventory cost is higher than normal, but that is largely due to the Trader Vic’s in Emeryville having a yard sale, which I think they only do once every 5 years or so. The line was crazy long and quite a few of the choice items were gone before I finally got to the sales area, but I still found some good deals. I picked up 6 Tiki Mugs (sold 2 already) and some South Pacific wall art which I still need to list. Stuff was going fast and I think they probably sold out by the end of the day.
Now to go listen to the podcast while I list.

Last week we went back to Universal Orlando. I had been following a guy on youtube who has documented their safety protocols, so I felt pretty good that it would be ok. I was not disappointed in the least. Universal did an amazing job managing mask wearing and social distancing in the park. Surprisingly, wearing a mask in 90 degree florida heat wasn’t hard at all.
Then I get back home yesterday and go to the grocery store to find ZERO cart sanitizing supplies and numerous people not wearing masks. How messed up is it that I felt safer in Florida at a large amusement park than my own home town?
The new time away setting on ebay is AWESOME!!! It took all of 30 seconds to set it up and all of my listings were updated with the dynamic handling time as well as a message to the buyer that I was out of town. I didn’t get a single question from buyers asking when I would ship.
Speaking of luxury problems, I came home to 40 items to ship. It worked out well that I was awake before 4am due to the time change so I knocked most of them out this morning before I left for work.
No problem discussing mad max/star trek philosophy, but can we all agree that over the next week or two we will NOT talk politics on here? We lost multiple awesome members last time. I don’t want that to happen again. I’d love to maintain this little bubble where politics seems to not exist and we can all get along regardless of all those identifiers – it’s one of the very few escapes I have from it.

OH MY GOSH I meant to also mention that Time Away was AWESOME! I used it the second week it was available and it was a dream! I think it took using it for the first time for me to fully understand how it interacts with handling time — that I can still set handling time in business policies and it all works together in beautiful harmony! Seriously the best. Also, my managed payments kicked in today finally, so wish me luck! So far the end-of-the-year changes rolling out seem to be more good than trouble; good job, eBay!

Congrats @annaesthetic23 on publishing your book!
Enjoyed the podcast and the Star Trek philosophy session. Whatever happens I’m hoping there is more unity and protection going forward, and maybe more Ebay sales too! Sales were dismal this week – just had a couple – but I can blame myself since I’ve not been listing for so long.
As of yesterday, son has 7 early college apps in, with acceptance from 2 of those toward the bottom of his list. There are 3 more due this month, but some of the work is done on those. It’s quite a marathon but I’m feeling a bit less distracted this week and relieved that he is over the hump at least in this crazy process.
My Broad Porch coffee arrived quickly and I look forward to trying that. See now that Amazon set me up to buy a refurbished pot, so I need to keep a better eye on them when ordering. I got free shipping on a big work item, so I joined Prime in the spring and I have to say it is super convenient and I will probably order enough stuff and movies to make it wash on the fee. I’m sure I’m paying a bit more here and there for Prime items but I do like to be able to shoot an order and get it off my mind without worrying about combined shipping. My husband has become a big Poshmark fan. He found a less famous but higher quality brand of clothing he likes and says he’s been getting good deals around the $15 mark. Surprisingly, he kind of liked the idea of the little notes the sellers put in there.
Have a safe and peaceful week out there trash elves.

@christiner – I hope your son gets accepted to a school that he’s excited about (and that is reasonably price). When my daughter was applying (about 6 years ago) she really wanted USC but I didn’t want that for her because it was out of my financial range. Fortunately she didn’t get accepted to the program she wanted at USC (though she got accepted to to a different program she didn’t want). In the end she went to UC San Diego and loved it. (All the U.C’s are great schools IMO).

Thanks Simon! Thanks for sharing and I’m glad it worked out so well for your D. I’m nervous about the UCs holistic admissions process but he will apply to 5 campuses. It’s a bit exhausting applying to so many schools but he should have some good choices at the end and if we are lucky some merit. We are leaning private but who knows? Partly because hasn’t really found a solid favorite and also because of all of the uncertainty, the plan is to apply heavily. I’m a terrible parent in the sense that emotionally I ride all of their highs and lows with them.

Congrats that the process is working. That’s great you guys are helping your son so much. I remember applying for college on my own as a 17 year old. Very very overwhelming.

Thanks Jay! It was a pretty simple process in the ’80s for me but I ended up undermatching. Fun socially and it all worked out, but I’d like to help choose a better path for my son. Long process. Will be super grateful in December when all apps are done.

11/04/2020 at 5:53 pm #83181
Just had a flashback to my senior year. I applied early decision (is that what y’all are doing?) to MassArt in Boston and got accepted by December. That was it, thank goodness!
-
11/07/2020 at 10:22 am #83218
He is applying early action (not binding), not early decision mainly because he didn’t have a firm favorite, we want to compare merit aid offers, and we haven’t been able to travel to MA yet. Yes, used to be SO much easier. Some of the extra essays these kids have to write are ridiculously insightful for a 17 year old kid and certainly burdensome when you are applying to this many schools. The colleges want their yield rate high so they are trying with the essays to figure out if you will really come.

Star Trek does of course capture a certain optimistic progressive ethos, I believe this was quite deliberate. (The theme song for the new Enterprise series is really the apotheosis of that particular vibe.) Early series were very bullish of course; DS9 was a little more reflective and self-critical, which is part of why I liked it better (for example, they had to deal with the reality that the Klingons and Cardassians weren’t going to be singing kumbaya anytime soon, and act accordingly).
Anyway, the opposite of the Star Trek vision, which I might call the Burkean or “constrained vision” of human nature to use Sowell’s phrase, is not so much that Mad Max is a *good* outcome, as the idea that society is perpetually a couple of bad harvests, or a prolonged power outage, or a severe social upheaval, away from a Max Max scenario, and whatever institutions or social capital are holding that at bay might be fragile, perhaps easily broken in the process of trying to build utopia. It is the perspective that general peace and prosperity, even if imperfect, are historical exceptions to the millenia-old norm of scraping poverty, and not something to be gambled away for double-or-nothing. Well, I promise I will not get any less abstract than this, but felt I needed to stick up for Burke’s side a little here.
Just a normal week on ebay, overall.
Sales: CAD$2739, 15 sales, COGS: $516, Fees: ~$368, Postage: $241 –> Gross profit: $1614
Expenses: $581, New inventory: $363 –> Cashflow: $1186
-
11/04/2020 at 8:26 am #83163
I can appreciate this perspective and we’ve honestly prepared for bot outcomes. Always hedge your bets.
Ultimately once we all agree we don’t want to work together, it’s every man for himself. That’s the lesson I see in our current world.

This week, I had a large order from a Canadian buyer. While I love the GSP, I am willing to ship direct for certain countries, and Canada is certainly one of them. While doing all work to get him the best shipping price available, I found UPS Standard to Canada to be an over $20 savings, so I selected that as the option. When I went to buy the label, only USPS and eBay standard showed up. Ends up that even though we can now buy domestic UPS labels directly on eBay, the international options still have to be purchased on their website.
What was frustrating was the call to customer service; the rep kept telling me that the options on the listing page aren’t guaranteed, only estimated and suggested. This made no sense to my question as to how to buy the label. After going around in circles a few times, I realized that I just needed to buy a label from their website. This was from a US based rep too!
Anyways, sorry about the short rant. I also had a decent week buoyed by the sale to Canada.
Week of Oct 25 – 31
Total Items in Store: 1354 eBay, 32 Etsy
Items Sold: 20 eBay
Cost of Items Sold: $38 + $24.60 Commission
Total Sales: $517.97 eBay
Highest Price Sold: $97 for 12 Scotch whiskey pitchers
Average price: $25.90
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $0
Number of items listed this week: 51The Canadian buyer was interested in purchasing several Scotch whiskey pitchers from brands he didn’t have in his collection, but wanted to keep the price down considering shipping. I told him that I would give him a big break on any pitcher in my unlisted inventory, so he ended up buying a total of 12, which only included a few that were listed, for the very humble price of $97. Shipping was just under $70. I only paid 25 cents each, so I’m happy, he’s happy.
-
11/02/2020 at 9:36 pm #83134
Update to the Canada shipment: UPS was super fast, but the buyer had to pay a C$39 broker fee in addition to the import fees. I googled it and found that USPS does not charge any additional fees. So, doing C$ to US$ in my head, he paid maybe $8 more in shipping because of that fee. I don’t ship direct often, but I’ll stick with USPS in the future.

10/24/20-10/31/20
Total Items In Store: 2104
Items Sold: 21
Gross Sales: $456
Highest Price Sold: $80 (New Corning Spice of Life Menu-Ette Set)
Average Price Sold: $21.71Returns: 1 $8 – partial refund for damaged mug.
Money Spent on New Inventory: $176
Number of items listed: 12- Very poor week in sales. Only 21 items sold and most were very low dollar.
- My shipping options changed back this week to defaulting to what the buyer requested, so that’s a good thing.
- Our area in Illinois is seeing rising COVID numbers and will be shutting down all indoor dining again this week.
- My mail carrier is thrilled that the election is almost over and she won’t have to sort thousands of political ads everyday anymore.
- She also said that she has seen a huge drop in the number of packages she’s picking up and delivering daily. She thinks people are slowing their spending due to uncertainty about the election and worry about their job status with COVID on the rise.

I may have to stop listening to your podcast. LOL! I haven’t received a payment dispute in probably 5-6 years. I listened to the podcast this morning about the rash of payment disputes people are getting and 5 hours later I get a payment dispute because the buyer doesn’t remember buying a postcard. Unreal. Can you please talk about winning the lottery next time?

Yay! My first time posting to this thread!
October 25-31
Active Listings: 118
Items Sold: 8
Gross Sales (including shipping): $442.89
Cost of Items Sold: I don’t track this, pulling out of my storage room of doom
Highest Price Sold: $123.50 (Breyer Special Run Arabian Stallion)
Average Price Sold: $45.11
Returns: 0
Sourcing Cost: Nothing this week
This is my first week under managed payments and with the new-to-me dashboard. Love the downloadable report (I was making my own spreadsheets before). Question if someone knows: if the PayPal fee column is empty, and the eBay fee column is more than my usual 10% does that mean they paid through eBay (credit card, I assume)? The new layout is confusing to begin with, it took me forever to find where to start listing now! I do like the adjustable table of items for sale. Some good, some bad, typical of change…

Dont know the answer to your question. But yes, I think its a good evolution with eBay but also means having to do redo our processes.

Highest Price Sold: $199.99 (Vintage US Forest Service Badge)
Average Price Sold: $33.53

Unfortunately I think my best sale is coming back although it’s not officially a return yet. But the buyer messaged me and asked if he could return to the PO Box on my return address so even though a return request hasn’t been started I’m expecting I’ll get it back this week. But my second best sale was actually my favorite. I got a lot of Hello Kitty backpack clip-ons and I listed them as 3 separate quantity listings, 1 for each color variation I wanted for $8 each. The buyer messaged me and asked if I’d make him a deal if he bought all of them. So we finally settled on $150 with free shipping and he took them all. For a 24 hour flip on a $22 lot I was stoked, I imagine I would have still been trying to sell through those this time next year otherwise and I’d rather have the money to buy more inventory right now. So even with the likely return it was a good week.

Here are my numbers for the week:
Total Items in Store: 4187

Total Sales: $1109.97
Cost of Items Sold: $173
Average Price Sold: $19.82
Average Cost of Item: $3.09
Highest Price Item Sold: $49.95 Apple Airport Express A1392 2nd Gen
Number of items listed this week: 66
YTD Sales: $50561
YTD sales compared to this time last year: +19%
Hats sold this week: 40 (71% of sales) worth $678 (61% of sales $)Another consistent week though I had no big sales this week.
One of my goals for this week from my bucket list (with my new-found free time), was to watch the original 3 Star Wars movies that I’ve never watched before even though I was in elementary school when they originally came out in the 1970s. Sci Fi was never an interest for me so I never got around to seeing them. I was surprised that they hold up quite well.
Regarding solar power, I did some Google searching and it looks like lots of states allow you to sell solar power back to the grid (“Net Metering”) : https://www.ncsl.org/research/energy/net-metering-policy-overview-and-state-legislative-updates.aspx In Virginia, this doesn’t apply to small solar generators. Maybe that’s the issue for you.
I’m cautiously optimistic about what’s going to happen tomorrow (election day). Thanks for keeping this a non-political place. It’s sooooooo divisive right now.

Yep, Net Metering exists in some states. It allows you to sell back power but only to zero out your bill at best. My point is you cannot build solar in any US state an oversized system to generate power to make money. Simply because power companies don’t know what to do with too much power. We currently like to have central power generation they can turn on and off.
But we have the technology to handle a distributed renewable power ecosystem. Safer, cleaner, cheaper. If you’re really interested, I recommend downloading this recent report: https://www.rethinkx.com/energy

Star Trek, definitely.
Had a great sale on a rare for us piece of furniture, which really bumped our sales. Largely thanks to you guys, who gave us the insight on selling furniture with local pickup. It was a large MCM credenza that we purchased for $500 and sold for $1200. Took about 8 month to sell and the buyer is sending a shipping company to pick it up. I had asked for cash only, but accepted Paypal since the buyer had over 1700 positive feedback on eBay. Supposed to pick up on Saturday, so keeping fingers crossed.
Had my first lost international shipping item of the pandemic. A $15 puzzle shipped to France that disappeared off the tracking radar in September and never made it to the buyer. Total refund $38 which hurts for an item I probably only made $12 on to begin with. Shipped direct instead of using GSP. Didn’t insure since it was so low value. This may be the first lost item I’ve every had. Don’t recall another anyway. Probably will show up sooner or later.

I had a little better of a week this go around. Christmas items are starting to fly off the shelves. Good thing too because I spent a whole week listing nothing but the stuff. The graniteware match safe was a nice little sale, but for the most part my sales have been pretty low dollar.
We went to a rummage sale where I jumped on a gorgeous set of Mid Century glassware (Valencia by Culver if you want to look it up). They weren’t even finished setting it out when I proclaimed I’ll take these! Got eight tumblers for a dollar. I also partook in another online auction on Sunday which was really interesting, but I’ll talk about that next week after I’ve gone through all the stuff. But I think I’m done with auctions for the year. My inventory room is almost at 100%, which is more than plenty to last me well into late spring.

Great find on the Culver Valencia tumblers! I sold my last one not too long ago. I had purchased a set of 5 and priced high for the set, but after it didn’t sell for a year I decided to sell them individually, which worked out great. Sold most of them for 11.99 + shipping each. A couple I sold for only $8 + shipping each because I got nervous that they weren’t selling – that was a mistake! In the end it worked out well for me b/c I much prefer packing/shipping a single glass at a time. You should do very well with your even number.

$ Spent on New Inventory: $0Another good week for me, with numbers pumped up by some coins at auction. I discovered this week that eBay Labels under Managed Payments has lost the ability to support shipments to APO/FPO. When I called to complain the CSR said that they’re working on it and that I’d need to go to the post office and buy a label. I replied that I’ll use Shippo instead, thank you very much. He got a little defensive about that. Thanks for the tip on the broker fees under UPS to Canada, Sharyn. I always ship international direct but 99% of the time it’s under 4 lbs and goes First Class. I haven’t had to deal with a larger package in a while but I will at some point.

As requested, my book is up on eBay! 🙂 https://www.ebay.com/itm/264928821063
I listed it in the same fashion as nearly all of my other listings, including a best offer option. It’s kind of my way of doing pay-what-you-want for my fellow scavengers! Cheers!

Just ordered a copy of your book and I’m looking forward to reading it (while enjoying a cup of L & J’s coffee). Thanks for letting us know it became available on ebay. We need to support each other in all our endeavors.

Me too, looking forward to reading it! Good job, I know that’s a lot of work to write a book!

Thank you so much, everybody! I feel very supported and always accepted by this community. You guys are the best! I agree that we have the responsibility and honor of supporting each other in all our endeavors, especially in the scrappy, self-motivated, self-defined lives we lead! Oh, and I’m sure this book will pair very well with some Broadporch coffee 😉 I’m definitely living by the rule that “coffee is for listers” haha! The coffee is seriously delicious!

Sad week here
Finally have over 600 items in my store-I took a long time to get there. Now, my goal is to get to 700 before the end of the month, but I have a lot of other extraneous things to take care of this month, so that will definitely be a huge challenge.
Looking forward to today (or tomorrows podcast)
