Overall impression of the week: I bought 50 cockroach bait stations that were new in package from a thrift store. I paid $1 each and I am selling them for $11-15 each. So the return over the whole haul is great but the per item return is just $3 if I sell one alone and $5 each if I sell two together. So that has brought down by ROI for the week. Still a great week and well above the goal. This is making up for some weak months earlier in the year. The real question is “Will it continue”?
06/28/2020 at 7:31 pm in reply to: What percentage of your inventory do you sell every month? #78827I am very much fast nickel. I undercut on prices, pay to promote, etc. June sales are about 230 items and I have 310 listings for 400ish units. So 50% sell through this month. A normal month for me is 30% sell through so June has been great.

Weekly ROI:2.35x June ROI: 2.86x 2020 ROI: 2.53xInteresting discussion this week on existential nihilism. This is not my world view at all. But, I understand that without a God, it is the logical conclusion to draw. I think it is incredibly depressing though. You basically cannot function in life if you think about it too hard. Nothing matters…. not what you do, not people, not anything……
Anyway, another consistent week of sales for me. uncanny how close the numbers are to the last few weeks. But above what I expect for this time of year so I am happy. I am still beating my per day goal of $50.
Cheers
Thanks for the kind words. And happy birthday!
I have a lot of respect for what you guys have built. Dont get me wrong. I have listened to the podcast for about a year now and I have learned so much from you both. Keep it up.
I dont know how skilled I am 🙂 … I usually head up into the rich area (carmel and fishers north of Indianapolis) to do my sourcing. The rich people have the name brand stuff. I source either every friday or Saturday from 7 to 12. Plus online arbitrage and some thrift stores. Probably about 5-7 hours a week total.
I do dump old inventory to recoup my money. I have nothing in my store older than 18 months atm. I just dont have room to store it to make a few bucks years down the road.
Since I deal mainly in contemporary items and you do antiques, that plays a role I think. In my experience, antique items are slow. For example, I sell Harry Potter books 1-7. So many people are buying that if you price competitively you can sell it in 24 hours.
I keep an eye on my views and watchers and if they are not at levels I like within 7 days, I drop the price. I also run sales on everything older than 60 days. And I have 7% promotion on everything. I think I’m willing to make less per item to keep things moving.
I don’t think your method is bad, I just dont have the space to wait for top dollar.
06/15/2020 at 7:28 am in reply to: What do I need for a beginner to take super high quality photos on a budget? #78428I use a fuzzy white blanket draped over the couch. Use natural light at first until you are ready to upgrade and use your smart phone. Take the pics in square mode all straight up and down to avoid rotating later. Dont edit anything.
I start the draft in the ebay app on my phone, upload pics to the draft, and then head over to the PC to finish the drafts.
A key to no shadows with ring lights is to use more than one. I use two right now but I think I might bump it up to 3 and add one directly above the item.
I started on ebay when my son was born. So that would be 2014. But I didnt start getting serious until 3-4 years ago. I did $3-4k in profit for two years and then committed to it like a second job last year and bumped that up to $11k in profit. This year my goal is $18k in profit and I am on track to meet it.
I sell a lot of complete book series, mainly young adult and Star Wars. I also sell video games, used shoes, used coats and jackets and some shirts like Harley Davidson. And then the rest is whatever I can find that is worth money at Garage Sales, estate sales and Thrift Stores. I did some auctions during the lockdown but the prices just went up and up so I stopped until things cool off.
June 7 – June 13, 2020
Total Items For Sale: 280 (Plus FB Marketplace)
Items Sold: 66 (19% Sell Through Rate for Week, FB Marketplace and Multi Quantity Listings make this look higher than it should be)

Weekly Profit: $626.52, $89.50/Day (after shipping, fees, COGs)

Highest Price Sold: $66 (Geronimo Stilton Hardcover Lot)
Average Price Sold: $26.92

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $142
Number Of Items Listed This Week:58 ($1358)
June ROI: 2.90x 2020 ROI: 2.51xA strange week of sales. The average sale price was pretty low. I listed a ton of video games and book singles that were in the $10-15 range and that influenced the numbers. I still am over my $50 profit per day goal so things are going well. Garage sales have been CRAZY. So many people there.
Looking at the other people on here for the previous weeks. I feel like the odd man out. I am running a much faster nickle type store while you all seem to be working on slow dime. I hold steady at my inventory level over the course of the year and sell through all of my inventory three times per year. It works for me, but if you take a look at my ROI above you can see I am spending a lot more money than you all are to earn my profit.
I havn’t listened to this weeks episode yet but I look forward to it tomorrow!
I agree about the garage sales. I have never seen them so busy. Shoulder to shoulder on a Friday at 8 am.
Jay, i pass on stuff like coach too but these were in a pile of shoes and cost $7. I figured it’s worth a chance.
My daughter has several fake designer purses in her dress up box 🙂

Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $1281
Number Of Items Listed This Week: 74 ($2082)Overall an amazing week. One of my best ever. I was invited to a private sale on the 31st and spent around $700. Still working through listing it but it looks like ill make upwards of $2000 profit from the sale alone. Garage sales opened back up and I have been hitting that hard as well. Lots of cool pickups. (P90X DVDs $5 into $60, Justin Boots $2 into $60 and so much more.) I have been doubling my goal for the month of $50 profit per day. This month should help make up for March which was terrible.
Funny story from this week. I picked up some Adidas YEEZY Boost 350s at a garage sale. (if you dont know these are hype shoes and can be worth $200 plus in good condition. These were very worn. The shoe is commonly faked so I checked it carefully and was confident it was authentic. I listed it for 0.99 Cents free shipping 7 day auction. It got a ton of attention but then it was taken down by ebay and I got an automated email saying it was counterfeit and that I could not relist it. Im not sure how this happened? Did someone report it? Is it something in the algorithm that flagged it? I sent customer service an email but I have not heard back. Im going to just sell it for $150 on FB marketplace but I am super frustrated about the whole thing.

Total Items For Sale: 248
Items Sold: 26 (9.5% Sell Through Rate for Week)
Gross Sales: $1031 (Includes Shipping)
Weekly Profit: $474.43, $67.76/Day (after shipping, fees, COGs)
Cost of Items Sold: $229
Highest Price Sold: $205 (6 Rare Star Wars Hardcovers, Global Shipping Program)
Average Price Sold: $39.65
Returns: I need to track when I get a return, I only track what item was returned and how much was refunded.
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $345
Number Of Items Listed This Week: 33 ($1500)My goal for the month was to list something every day. This week I missed my first day because of being busy with “real life”. My ebay sales were fine but a little down from the previous weeks. My goal for the year is $50 a day profit (after COGs, Fees, shipping etc) so May will meet the target regardless. Overall a fine week.I have been working on porch pickup a lot lately and I think that is hurting my ebay numbers a little bit.
As far as FREE SHIPPING goes or (shipping included), I think the concept is dumb since shipping is never free. However, I get that it is A.) the industry standard, B.) rewarded by the ebay algorithm, and C.) it possibly has a psychological effect. So, I play their game, free shipping, free returns, white backgrounds, lots of pictures, 1 day handling, the whole 9 yards. I won’t do free shipping if it is over 2 lbs though unless it is books. 90% of what I sell is less than 2 lbs or books.
Thanks for the podcast!
