June ROI: 2.90x 2020 ROI: 2.51xA strange week of sales. The average sale price was pretty low. I listed a ton of video games and book singles that were in the $10-15 range and that influenced the numbers. I still am over my $50 profit per day goal so things are going well. Garage sales have been CRAZY. So many people there.
Looking at the other people on here for the previous weeks. I feel like the odd man out. I am running a much faster nickle type store while you all seem to be working on slow dime. I hold steady at my inventory level over the course of the year and sell through all of my inventory three times per year. It works for me, but if you take a look at my ROI above you can see I am spending a lot more money than you all are to earn my profit.

I started on ebay when my son was born. So that would be 2014. But I didnt start getting serious until 3-4 years ago. I did $3-4k in profit for two years and then committed to it like a second job last year and bumped that up to $11k in profit. This year my goal is $18k in profit and I am on track to meet it.
I sell a lot of complete book series, mainly young adult and Star Wars. I also sell video games, used shoes, used coats and jackets and some shirts like Harley Davidson. And then the rest is whatever I can find that is worth money at Garage Sales, estate sales and Thrift Stores. I did some auctions during the lockdown but the prices just went up and up so I stopped until things cool off.

You must have a tremendous skill in picking out high value inventory. And/or you live in an area with a lot of good stuff. Looks like your average COG was $6/item? That’s cheap.
I dont think any of us want to sell items slowly, but it just turns out that when you want to buy items for cheap, they’re usually items that arent fast turnover. With everyone using their phones at auctions and thrift stores, the high value items get bought quick. Stores also know how to price them higher as well. We end up buying the items no one wants and are willing to wait till they sell. It’s a beautfiul low risk business.
Also, I find as scavengers keep their store open longer, their inventory can naturally grow as slow items build up. Some sellers dump their items to avoid this. We choose to keep a large inventory knowing everything eventually sells.
How much time do you spend scavenging in any given week?

I dont know how skilled I am 🙂 … I usually head up into the rich area (carmel and fishers north of Indianapolis) to do my sourcing. The rich people have the name brand stuff. I source either every friday or Saturday from 7 to 12. Plus online arbitrage and some thrift stores. Probably about 5-7 hours a week total.
I do dump old inventory to recoup my money. I have nothing in my store older than 18 months atm. I just dont have room to store it to make a few bucks years down the road.
Since I deal mainly in contemporary items and you do antiques, that plays a role I think. In my experience, antique items are slow. For example, I sell Harry Potter books 1-7. So many people are buying that if you price competitively you can sell it in 24 hours.
I keep an eye on my views and watchers and if they are not at levels I like within 7 days, I drop the price. I also run sales on everything older than 60 days. And I have 7% promotion on everything. I think I’m willing to make less per item to keep things moving.
I don’t think your method is bad, I just dont have the space to wait for top dollar.

Buy for $1. Sell for $30 in two years. More than a few bucks 🙂 It sounds like we spend much less time scavenging and managing our store as well. If we decide to work on another project for a couple months, history has shown that our eBay store keeps cranking our cash in the background of our lives.
But yes, welcome to the forum. This debate is as old as this podcast. Fast nickel vs slow dime. Whatever works for you. From your numbers, it looks like you have an extremely successful business. Personally, I’m not sure I even have the skill to only find/purchase items that sell quickly. That really is a skill that you have.

Number of New Items Listed this Week: 17Things really picked up for me this last week. I made a few big sales that really helped my totals, including that knife I mentioned above as well as a really pretty pottery bowl for $125. And I included in my numbers above a profitable trip to a gold buyer. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been collecting scrap gold and sterling from auctions and such. Broken rings and necklaces, salt shaker lids, silverware that have been through the garbage disposal, a gold tooth – all this amounted to $320 cash! I’ve never been to one of those cash for gold type places, but I did some research and found the most reputable one in my area.
It’s funny you mentioned about bikes in the podcast. I took a vintage bicycle to a bike shop to have the cranks removed. While I was there, the owner and I got to talking about the current bike market. He said that because of the COVID thing, the factories haven’t been able to pump out enough bikes this year and buyers are paying much more for stuff on eBay. It’s a seller’s market right now. He asked me what I was looking to get for my bike frame. When I told him around $200, he said I’d better at least double and maybe triple that number. So just to let everyone know, be on the lookout for bike gear to resell.

Yes, the bike market has been crazy. There are shortages everywhere and the rumor is that the supply of new bikes won’t be replaced until late summer or longer. I’ve also noticed shortages of parts, such as tires and tubes.
I keep an eye on “Offer Up”, always on the hunt for a good deal on used bikes. I’ve noticed that many are priced higher and many many are selling within a couple of days of being listed.
This is a bit unprecedented and I feel very temporary. I agree as Jay said, that if you have a bike you longer want, now is the time to sell. Once the situation changes and people get back to normal, we will be in a buyer’s market again. I think next years’s garage sales will have great deals on used bikes.

New Listings 8I hit two big jackpots sourcing this weekend.
The first was at the end of a fairly disappointing yard sale day. The last stop was a bit out of the way, and very disorganized. Apparently the guy bought the house, contents and all, and was trying to recoup some cash and get rid of everything. Nothing was priced, so I spot checked a few items and then asked if I could just make a pile. I picked pretty much everything of value and got to negotiation. I dug into the awkward silence to force the guy to throw out the first number. He jokingly said $300, and I jokingly said “ok have a nice day”. Then he said $200. I looked through my wallet and only had $85 left (I keep more in truck for emergencies as a negotiating tactic). I offered what I had, and he didn’t like that. He started pointing out things that were valuable, so I told him to take out the things he found precious until he was comfortable at $85. After a minute of him struggling I asked if they did Paypal. They said yes, so I said “I can pay paypal if you’ll make it an even hundred.” They took that.
I filled half my truck bed with this haul! Multiple items that will sell for $50-100. I estimate total value of the haul at $1500.The next stop was at the local Goodwill that is next door to the Home Depot I needed to go to. They closed in 15 minutes so it was a quick stop. Nothing significant for the most part, then as I passed the toys I saw a neat board game that caught my eye – Electronic Mystery Mansion. Then I saw another awesome old board game…and another…and so on! I started spot checking to see value, and every one I pulled down had a great sell through rate and minimum sales price was $30 with some over $100. There was less than 5 minutes till they closed so I grabbed all the good ones – 11 in total – and high tailed it to checkout. I just hoped they were complete but expected them not to be.
Yesterday I went through all the games and 9 out of 11 were COMPLETE! The two incomplete ones were lower value games missing just a few minor pieces so still 98% complete and fully playable. I couldn’t believe the Mystery mansion was complete – that game has a ton of detailed parts.

Number of items listed this week: 59It felt slower than the numbers reveal. I’m happy to report that I did a lot of listing and ran out of non-Christmas Starbucks mugs from my newbie death piles. Unfortunately my day job has become pretty slow, but I’m thrilled to tackle some piles. Now I’m making a couple of boxes of true death piles, mostly smalls. Also finding some fun vintage stuff to list. I’m not doing much RA either since I’ve stocked up and the retailer sales aren’t as good at the moment.
Downtown reports are that people are not consistently wearing masks and tourism is coming back, so hope we continue to be ok here. I went to an uptown outdoor distanced patio with large tables to eat and have cocktails with friends once. It was a treat and their outdoor situation felt safe. It was a pricey, newer place so we could even distance from each other. Also went once to the thrift store because I donated items. It had opened earlier and seemed picked over but the thrift store was limiting the number of people inside and providing sanitizer. There is an awesome charity sale outside today that I’ll be missing. Back to the piles this week.

Not the greatest week here. Wednesday morning, about 8AM, I noticed a bunch of items in my ebay “recently viewed items, from adult only categories” that I had not recently viewed. I called ebay to make sure my account was secure. Talked to 3 reps who told me it was secure, but that there was a suspicious IP address on record from a few days earlier. So they blocked it and told me a few things to do and check on my own, change passwords, password questions, activate 2-Step Verification, etc.
While I was going through the checklist, I discovered that a few days earlier my business policy for Payments had been changed and all my sales for the past 3 days had been paid to someone else’s paypal account. 2 days worth had already been shipped, and the 3rd batch was already packed with shipping labels purchased, but not given to the USPS yet.
Another 3 Rep phone call. They instructed me to put my store on full vacation mode while I make the necessary changes to my account to correct the payment details.
I got to work. I refunded all the transactions with payments to the wrong account, and sent emails to all the affected customers explaining the situation and that I would send a link to their newly listed item or an invoice to make a repeat payment once things were cleaned up. I was able to change the address on most of my active listings using the business policies tool, but I had maybe 500 listings that had offers out. Those all had to be ended, edited and relisted.
Shew, there goes that hour, but not too bad I guess. Hopefully some of those people will re-pay for their stuff.
And then… I discovered the changes had already populated across the other 9 international ebay sites. Waiting for them to switch back on their own via third party update could take up to 48 hours, so I decided to change them all manually on each individual site.
I turned off vacation mode and sent links or invoices to all the affected customers for their items.
Shew, there goes that 6 hours….but that’s still a lot better than two days, right!
I Checked my phone after a couple beers and realized only 10 listings were active in search results on the US site, Then I remembered it taking a while for things to go live again after being on full vacation mode, sometimes a couple days…which is why I stopped using it. I noticed the 10 active listings were listings that I had just edited. I opened a test batch in the bulk editor and just closed it. The test batch showed up in search results a couple minutes later. Nice! I went through all 5000 listings 1000 at a time, opening in bulk editor and closing. A few errors would pop up each time that needed fixing for some reason, so it took about an hour to work through the whole inventory. Finally! Everything was live again!
Wait, what about the international sites? NO!
Rinse, Repeat……

Thursday Afternoon. I got an email from eBay saying they have noticed suspicious activity on the account and have locked it for all buying, selling, and messaging. I called in to make sure it wasn’t a new account breach, and was told it was just the computer finally catching up with me. He said he could see the history of all the account tasks I had done on Wednesday and was amazed. He told me since the computer had sent the notice out I would just need to change my password again and I would be all set.
Friday Morning. I got another email from eBay saying they noticed suspicious activity on the account and have ended all my listings, and that it was blocked from all buying selling and messaging. Another call to eBay, they said it was still the computer catching up with Monday’s hijacking. I was able to relist everything with credits.
Saturday Morning….
Well, here I am, sitting here with my fingers crossed. I didn’t get much else done this week, didn’t sell much either with the store turned on and off so many times. On the bright side, 75% of the items that had already been shipped have been paid for again by the customers, and 50% off the pending orders that were cancelled have been re-purchased. I’ll get the money back on the postage in a few weeks, and since I cancelled all the orders there will be no fees. All in all, I lost about a day and a half worth of sales, about 3 days worth of listing time and about 100% of my motivation….but it could have been a lot worse.
Finished the week with a $1600 sales day, so that helps take away the sting a bit.
TLDR: My ebay account got hijacked. By changing your ebay, paypal and email passwords regularly and by using security tools such as 2-step verification, you can minimize the risk of it happening to you too. Stay alert!

The_SEAM_Store – that sounds like a nightmare. Do you recall getting a message through ebay saying that someone was having trouble paying? I’ve seen them come through in a best offer. Those messages included a fake ebay or paypal link that may have taken you through a login page (which was actually at a hackers location). That’s the method that someone else got hacked recently.

Wow! that really hurts. Really curious how someone is able to hack the account like that. Even without the extra security features it seems like a long shot anyone would be able to guess your password. Out of curiosity, were you using the same password and email that might have been used on a site that got hacked, like Target or the like?Sorry you had to go through all that. Expensive lesson, but hopefully no long standing issues. Good luck.

Yeah, it was pretty painful, and I’m still feeling the effects. Fortunately, at this point 100% of the packages that had already been shipped but were then refunded, have re-paid for their purchases….thank goodness most people are relatively honest. About 75% of the unshipped/cancelled merchandise has been re-sold as well.
I use separate usernames and passwords on my ebay/paypal/email/bank accounts, and have for years…since the time my paypal was hacked for $1500 maybe 13 years ago. Though I probably haven’t been as diligent in changing them quarterly as I used to be. The only suggestion ebay’s trust/securities department could offer was that perhaps it was some sort of spyware sent to my email….though I’m concerned as to why Norton didn’t catch it. Other than that…I have no idea.
I have the 2-Step verification set up now, which is quite annoying to be honest, but if it keeps this from happening again, I guess I will just get used to it. That way if someone is trying to log into my account in the future, I will know immediately via text.

Jay, happy belated birthday greetings! As I’ve said before, you and Ryanne have accomplished so much and are your own bosses. And you’re turning trash into cash, which is incredibly fun (serious). Just this week I went to drop off three packages at the post office and noticed a young woman unloading an Ikea bag full of packages on the counter. Said to myself with a bit of envy ‘Dang, you had a good sales weekend!’ I’m 64 and I’m just really impressed when I see young people who choose to put down the game controllers and make some cash.

Number of New Items Listed this Week: 1Gut Reaction to the Week: Real slow. Likely my lowest sales week this year. No matter. March and April and the first half of May were incredible. Not surprised at all about the slow down. The weather the last couple of weeks has been incredibly nice, so I hope people are getting outside and not sitting in front of their screens. Also, I’ve had house projects that were overdue, so it was fine that I didn’t have to spend an hour each day packing.
Garage sales seem to be back in full bloom. This Saturday I went out and had a decent haul. I think people were trying to keep social distance, but very few were wearing face masks. Full disclosure: I didn’t wear one but I did my best to keep at least six feet away from people. The thing that blows is lack of community yard sales. Here in Kentucky they’re banned. But I’m seeing subdivisions holding sales, plus streets. Not sure of the difference between a subdivision and a community.
Scavenge of the Week: A store display Sansui electric sign for $15. Back in the 70s Sanui was a big name in audio components. Got it home and found it wouldn’t turn on. Put a new bulb in, no dice. Then replaced a doojiggy called a fluourescent started (cost $3 for two). That did the trick. Posted on eBay Saturday night for $220 BIN, sold in 24 hours. Nice change of pace from the glut of $20-30 items I’ve been selling lately.

I had an excellent week with a large number of sales, several over $50, and very few on commission. My part time job was very busy until Wednesday, so getting packages out the door was not so easy. I took advantage of my two day handling time.
Then, on Sunday, it all stopped. I haven’t had a single sale through today so far. I actually appreciate the quiet at this point.

Yard sales and estate sales are still fairly scare here so I’ve been confined to buying off ebay and from a local auction house that usually doesn’t have much stuff I’m interested in (though I did source from them the last 2 weeks).
My wife and son have both taken a liking to Broadporch coffee so I can see more purchases coming in the future as the 3 of us are going through it quickly. (We normally just buy the mega tins of ground coffee from Costco so this new coffee is a bit of a luxury purchase for us).
I had a return come back to me via a freight-forwarder from Jamaica this week. I really didn’t expect to ever see it arrive as it was only an $18 remote and I didn’t think anyone would go to so much trouble to return an item. I can’t imagine that a freight-forwarder does free returns.
I presume that by now you will have seen today’s scandal involving ebay employees intimidating a couple that ran an ecommerce blog. Does anyone know what blog it was? The must have had some interesting articles. Story.

You should probably have not accepted a return with a freight forwarder involved. Used to be eBay would back you on that. Hopefully this has not changed. The freight forwarder can damage or lose an item while it is under their control.You might need to convince an eBay rep that the address that you shipped to is a freight forwarder. This usually shows on Google.

Thanks @Timo – I’m aware that using a freight forwarder can void buyer protections. If the item didn’t get back to me I wouldn’t have refunded the cost. It came back in working condition and was worth under $20 so there was no need to treat it any differently to any other return.

Y’allllllllll. This was the slowest week I have had that I can even remember. As I’m writing this today, my DAILY total is only $6 under my WEEKLY total for June 7-13. Yikes. I’m very glad that this week is *already* better than the week we just closed out! The best part is, my 30th birthday was day 1 of this ultra-slow week, and it just happened to be the only day I sold literally zero items! Happy birthday to me? You just never know. I was kind of bummed about it honestly, since the past couple of months have had so much momentum! I love the idea that maybe the delayed tax deadline will mean another wave of refund cash in people’s pockets. I’m rooting for that, for sure!

Number of items listed: 61• Sales were still a little low for me this week with a lot of low dollar items selling. Seems like the normal summer slow down.
• I was able to pick up some new inventory from some garage sales this week. Also attended my first live auction since February and scored a nice chunk of inventory to work with this week.
• My high sale this week was a fly fishing float tube. It was actually given to me as a wedding gift 25 years ago. I used it quite a bit when I lived in Colorado, but haven’t used it in 20 years since we moved to Illinois. Funny thing is that it sold for $80 and my friend paid less than $50 for it back in the mid 90’s. -
I just wanted to check in and let you all know I haven’t dropped off the planet. My dad passed last September and my dog died a week later and I was a hot mess for a while after that. Kept EBaying through all of it. I have finally caught up with the podcasts and just today signed up for managed payments. Ironically while I was signing up for the managed payments, the lawyer’s office called and said they are ready to settle dad’s affairs.
Anyway, I have been lurking and selling and scavenging. Now that I’ve caught up I hope to be on a bit more. Hopefully this managed payments thing will turn out ok. I have been seriously dragging my feet about signing up.

Not a great week of sales here, but not awful either. Sales are still up about 17% from last year for the last 31 days and sales for the quarter are up about 32%. BTW, I noticed that eBay has updated their sales reports page and provides more canned options. I like the options to easily compare current quarter with previous and previous year. A lot better than having to pick a time period from the calendar.
We ventured out over the weekend to purchase a new-to-us used car. We live in Montgomery County Maryland where most people are observing social distancing still, but we drove across into Virginia to check out a car. A completely different situation. Most people we saw were ignoring distance and mask wearing. We were wearing masks, but most people at the dealer weren’t, which made me a bit nervous. Due to some unsavory business practices we didn’t buy there and drove back to Maryland and bought closer to home. In contrast, almost everyone was wearing a mask and very careful. We had a smaller Mazda 5 for our scavenging vehicle and decided we needed more room, so pulled the trigger on a Honda Odyssey. Looking forward to loading it up with purchases soon.

Congrats on buying the Odyssey as a scavenger wagon. Makes a lot of sense — carries a ton, you’re able to lock it and have your stuff out of the elements. I use an ’05 Chrysler Pacifica. Like an SUV. Works pretty well but there are times I need something larger, like a van. Toying with idea of adding a hitch so I can use a hitch-mounted rack or maybe some type of roof rack.

Swiss Cargo makes an affordable balistic nylon rooftop cargo bag that folds up and stores under the floor with my spare tire. It adds an extra 13 Cubic Feet of cargo space in a pinch and has come in handy many times, especially on thrift funded vacations/business trips where I already have personal cargo or extra passengers….or when I buy $18K worth of neckties and pay no attention to the size of the pile until I load up.
I think I picked mine up at Ollies for about $25-$30.

Unfortunately I think wearing masks has for some dumb reason become political. I know a number of people in our town purposely don’t wear mask because the virus is a “hoax”. Amen Jay. It’s like you don’t have the right to decide to go into the store with no pants. This is more important to society at this point than wearing pants! We don’t know everything about this virus but there is a ton of evidence that masks cut down on transmission.

I had some good sales this past week, and the stay at home order has finally been lifted for my state, so I visited a thrift store. The employees didn’t sound too happy about being there (not that I blame them).
I had a frustrating global shipping return. This isn’t the first time this has happened and I am going to remove global shipping from the commodity items I sell. Used items, ok. But it’s not worth it to me money wise to pay for return shipping international and they file an item not described, when they just want a free return.
