christine, Your business model reminds me of a guy who used to be on the ebay Boards (sadly, I think he passed away some years ago). He had been running a retail shop for years before ebay, in a tourist town, and was a business savvy guy. He sold a mix of new gift shop type stuff (presumably sourced at wholesale) along with antiques. His view was: the new stuff sold faster and provided his main cash flow source, and the antiques were the profit center because of his higher margins. So he was willing to wait for the long tail items to sell while the newer stuff brought in cash at a pretty steady pace.
Terri,
If it is working correctly, what that means is this:
C9 Christmas Bulbs
is apparently a pretty broad search term. There are 1888 listings , many of them presumably for the same product. What is supposed to happen with this new thing is: there are 306 separate products. So, instead of the buyer digging through 1888 listings, the buyer can dig through 306. If she finds the product she wants, she clicks on that listing, which will open , not a traditional listing page, but a “product page”, which groups the same products together. Your item is presumably shown on one of the product pages.
I hope this makes sense.
Can you provide a link to your specific item? That might help me explain it if it still isn’t clear.
THose die cuts are really early die cuts…almost anything OLD Halloween will do well. Sourcing it at a good price is another matter, but I’m always looking.Newer Halloween can do quite well too, so don’t overlook it. Best thing to do is study solds on ebay.

The Santa Claus you ARE picturing is probably largely the product of Coca Cola, and only really dates back to the 1930s or so. Before that, Santa was depicted in a lot of different ways, although by the 30s, some of the basics were in place, just waiting for Haddon Sundblom to give us our modern Santa in ad campaigns for Coke.-

10/04/2017 at 10:51 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 329: 200+ Ebay Sales To Pack. We’re Not Complaining. #23619I’m a little surprised that he seems to be saying ebay has been pretty quiet about this. That’s just nonsense. eBay has been talking up Product Identifiers, their Catalog, and Product pages for several years now. And as Wenig has said, it’s something they should have done YEARS ago…if they had, they might be Number One today, instead of Amazon (or at least a lot closer to Amazon).
I do not share his pessimistic forecast about small sellers and the product pages. BUT I do think small sellers need to be realistic about ebay’s priorities. For more than a decade people have been saying ebay wants to get rid of the small sellers. I don’t think so. For the simple reason that we provide some of the most interesting inventory, the stuff that helps to differentiate ebay from other mainstream sites and helps to give ebay its truly vast selection. And also because quite a few “large” sellers on ebay started small….we’re the farm team for the pros, so to speak. And of course, many of us buy on the site because we spend so much time there.
So, as a group, we are very important to ebay, even if, as a group, we contribute a relatively small percentage of ebay’s GMV. But as individuals, we are expendable. I find it best to recognize my place in the ebay ecosystem (my place is pretty far down the food chain).
Nancy, What is it you want to know?
09/28/2017 at 11:38 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 328: Chaos vs Stress, There is a difference in life and business #23404Paul, I think that Griff’s advice is out of date. It’s true, something like a business card in a photo is not a watermark, and so it doesn’t violate the watermark rule. However, these is another rule in the Photo Policy section that it does violate. LIke many things on eBay, I don’t know how actively ebay enforces the rule, but personally, I would not want to find myself changing a lot of photos because I put a card in them, anymore than I’d want to do it for a watermark.
09/28/2017 at 11:34 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 328: Chaos vs Stress, There is a difference in life and business #23403Jay, As i said, I’ve been offering free return shipping for a few years, with no problems. Keep in mind that you don’t have to offer it on everything you sell. You could experiment with it by trying it on selected items.
I cannot say whether it has or hasn’t helped my sales. It certainly hasn’t hurt me. I offer it partly I figure buyers feel more confidence in a seller who offers it. But whether that is really very important for my type of stuff, I don’t know for sure. But I suspect some buyers who might otherwise be on the fence, go ahead and buy because they see it as risk free.
I’m not trying to push it on anyone. Like a lot of what ebay is doing these days, it is probably more useful for commodity sellers than for scavengers. But what I can say is in my experience it simply has not been a problem. I plan on ramping up my listings for Q4 and will continue to offer it. If it becomes a problem, I’ll let you guys know.
Just a quick note about this store upgrade promo. I have a Basic Store on an annual subscription. Be forewarned: if you “upgrade” to a Premium Store on a monthly subscription, you will be charged a termination fee of your annual Basic subscription. My partner did this, and got hit with the early termination fee. She called ebay and they promised to reverse the charge.
So I went ahead and upgraded from an annual Basic to an annual Premium. That is considered an upgrade without termination, I guess because I’m retaining the annual configuration. So, no early termination fee.
However, this means if I decide the Premium is more than I need, I must cancel it within the next 30 days (the promotion period). If I go beyond that and then cancel, I will be charged a termination fee.
09/27/2017 at 5:16 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 328: Chaos vs Stress, There is a difference in life and business #23364I just asked about this on ebay’s “Weekly CHat” discussion board. Here’s the answer from ebay rep Heidi:
I haven’t heard of this happening and I don’t believe it should be working that way. If you receive or see a report of this, would you mind @mentioning one of us on the thread? We’d be happy to look into it and investigate what’s happening. Thanks!09/27/2017 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 328: Chaos vs Stress, There is a difference in life and business #23361Ah, OK! I hope that’s true…wonder if its new, or just a test?
09/27/2017 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 328: Chaos vs Stress, There is a difference in life and business #23359Yes, that’s great—definitely satisfying to sell at full price after a low ball offer!
I’m not sure what you meant about ebay sending out notices? I know they send to watchers if you lower the price, but you did nothing? Or do they send a notice when an item gets an offer?
