If they ask, I generally do a combination vague/deflect.
I’m always friendly and never outright lie, though. I enjoy talking with the people running the sales (most of the time).
Personally, I’d like having the vintage price stickers on there. Especially if it’s from a store that’s no longer in business and can bring up some nostalgia in addition to the item itself.
It took about 10 minutes of attempts before I thought, “Maybe I should check the forums and see if this is a widespread thing.”
Fortunately I have 1 day shipping and the item I sold overnight was late enough to be considered sold today, so technically it’s a Monday ship date. Still a pain. Sorry to hear this for everyone needing it today.
Thanks for posting these! I’ve happily been a music-listening addict since I was a kid (i.e. 40 years or so). Always interested in new stuff.
Ebay has been adding “Best Offer” to my listings without a best offer, after they’ve been listed for about a week. I’ve had a store 4 years and this started happening last summer, I think. When I called, they shrugged (I could sense it over the phone). No answers given.
I’ve gotten used to it since I know to look for it, and change back the non-Best Offer listings to how they were originally.
Do you get the email from them? I get that sometimes. “Your items can now accept offers to attract more buyers!”
Cool! I’ve never been to that one. though I’ve been to Clarkston a few times. I’m north central (Royal Oak, Berkley, Ferndale area) and usually go to the Oak Park (Southfield?) and West Bloomfield locations, providing West Bloomfield is the one on Orchard Lake Rd.
Funny, I saw the post topic and immediately thought, “Jackfruit.” Then saw that’s the first thing you mentioned. I found some at a Trader Joe’s up the road (maybe $2 for a can) and made some BBQ. It was great. It was a little sweeter than I expected. Seeing your photo, I really want to try a sloppy joe version. I’m not a vegetarian, but am always open to things and tend to not eat a lot of meat.

I tried to see if I could figure out which Metro Detroit Salvation Army that was from. I’m not that skilled, though. 🙂 Congrats on the finds!
Jay: The flakey buyers are definitely something to get used to. Thankfully, experience helps with the learning process on the seller end of things; for example, now I’m a lot more specific than I used to be about my availability (in a nice way, of course), instead of waiting around all day to hear back from a prospective buyer to meet.
Terri: I love that! It’s such an extra perk when someone is so happy that they send you a picture, or even just send an additional text. A buyer sent me a picture of a Christmas tree I sold her a month ago, totally decorated in her living room just a few hours after the sale. It put a smile on my face, and also helps with the motivation to keep doing this.
This happened to me once or twice in the past week, but only when I started a new listing on the app from scratch (like scanning a CD or book barcode to list).
I opened one of those listings on my desktop and changing the business policies (or condition, etc.) on the listing didn’t change the automatic description info. Fortunately, we can delete/alter the auto description. I just deleted it all and wrote my own as usual.
I generally stick with the “sell similar” option, and that doesn’t have the automatic info added (yet?).
“-always take free stuff from friends/family – if it’s junk, you can get rid of it without offending them, they may offer better stuff in the future.”
It’s interesting what some others consider junk and what some consider valuable. I got a box of cookbooks from a relative (specifically for me to sell), which was very thoughtful and appreciated. Turns out none of the books were worth anything, even though they all looked pretty cool.
Also in the box were a few decorative tiles, which the relative said I could have if I wanted——even though they were just “some junk from the ’90s.” Turns out they’re pretty hard to find and could be worth something.
(As an aside, I accidentally liked my initial comment twice on this thread, the second time thinking I could click it again to undo the first like. That doesn’t work. Mentioning in case anything is seen on the back end and you think, “Damn, that guy is full of himself.”)
These are great rules/philosophies. Thanks for posting! I’m just now experiencing the “parting out” thing with an old vacuum cleaner.
My biggest rule, which is more a behavioral thing on my part, is that I never want to turn into a jerk because I’m so focused on getting “the prize.” Whether the prize is a small item I’m interested in at an estate sale or in a bigger sense of the word. That would suck the fun out of it all (for me, at least).
So, yes, that makes me the friendly, dopey, smiling guy at the estate sales who maybe doesn’t get every deal there is to be had, but I can live with that (and I’ve had no problem finding more than enough stuff).
02/01/2018 at 11:10 am in reply to: Looks like Ebay is partnering up with another Payment Processor #31839Thanks for posting this info. It helps quell any perhaps unnecessary worries that might’ve been the initial knee-jerk reaction to the news. (Which I had myself, even though it was quickly replaced with an “Everything changes” and “Let’s see what happens/business as usual for now” mindset.)
I’m jumping into this late, but I’m on board. I’ve gone out the past couple of weekends and every time I’ve seen an item to possibly pick up, I got a sickly feeling while thinking about all the stuff I haven’t yet listed, then I put the item back. I like to live pretty minimally, so it’s bugging me to have piles of things all over the house. I’m coming off recovering from a shoulder surgery, so I can finally start lifting stuff again (hooray!), which will help in the whole “organization” game.
While I don’t see myself going 100% cold turkey off of garage sales and thrift stores, some subconscious thing is pushing me to list and organize before amassing too much more stuff. The food/dieting analogy is great.
Then again, my neighborhood is having a city-wide garage sale this coming weekend…
