I had a really nice sale experience this past week. I hear so many horror stories about Craigslist (fortunately mine so far only involve people not showing up), and to save my friends the agony of hearing another reselling story, I figured I’d share this here.
I sold a dresser to someone who was staging a house (for Airbnb) a few miles up the road. I had it listed for $80 and I took an offer of $60.
When it turned out that she couldn’t fit it in her car, she asked if I’d be willing to deliver it and she’d pay more. I said I’d do it for the full $80, and she came back with $70, which was fine with me. Then she immediately texted back to say she’d pay me the full $80 since the weather was so crappy and she appreciated me helping her out.
I then saw a small scratch on the dresser that I hadn’t seen before and, after a bit of swearing to myself, texted her that I’d be fine with the $70 (providing she was still interested with the scratch). She said it was all good and, when I got there, gave me the full $80.
I took it with a clear conscience, which was a good feeling. And she seemed happy that I brought it over.
I’ve been chastised before for being almost “too” honest when selling stuff, but it’s the only way I’d feel right doing it (i.e. meaning I don’t try to hide the imperfections).
I kinda wish there was a way to leave positive feedback on Craigslist for her. Regardless, it was a good evening.

Once you get past the flakey buyers and scammy emails, we’ve always had good experience on Craigslist. As buyers, we get our best deals there since people are usually pricing to sell. As sellers, its nice because the buyer picks up in person and knows that all ales are final.

Great story! I think I’d be more wary if I lived in a big city, but my craigslist experiences have all been great (and, oddly enough, better than FB Marketplace where people aren’t quite as anonymous). Had two CL transactions within the past couple of weeks.
One was for a CRV cargo cover thingy that I picked up for free at my local recycling center since I have a CRV. Turned out this one was for an older model, so I put it on CL. I live in CT and buyer lives in MA, but was going to be about 30 minutes from my house later that day, so I met up with him. He said they’d just bought a new used car and his wife wanted to pay $1,000 more for one that had the cargo cover. He told her he’d get her a cargo cover for the cheaper car and was thrilled to buy mine for $100. He texted me later that night to let me know that it fit perfectly and his wife was ecstatic.
We decided to take our fireplace from 1997 to 2019. Part of the process was removing the large, white mantel and surround. I put it on CL for $100 and took $75 as the guy was buying it to build a fireplace set for his daughter’s middle school production of Mary Poppins. The next week, he texted me a pic of the set in progress. Made me so happy to see someone putting it to good use.

Jay: The flakey buyers are definitely something to get used to. Thankfully, experience helps with the learning process on the seller end of things; for example, now I’m a lot more specific than I used to be about my availability (in a nice way, of course), instead of waiting around all day to hear back from a prospective buyer to meet.
Terri: I love that! It’s such an extra perk when someone is so happy that they send you a picture, or even just send an additional text. A buyer sent me a picture of a Christmas tree I sold her a month ago, totally decorated in her living room just a few hours after the sale. It put a smile on my face, and also helps with the motivation to keep doing this.

Good to hear those positive CL stories! I too only have had good experiences on CL. I have been given some amazing free things on CL. I was given an art rack/caddy which is not cheap, and was in perfect condition (I did give the girl a $10. Starbucks card as a thank you because I know this was worth some cash. She was very appreciative. I have also been given 2 beautiful full sized vintage jewelry cases with ball and claw feet. I also have been given a butt load of fabric, quilting rulers (about 40) and other expensive sewing notions that I can use. I’ve also purchased many items with no issues and at a steal.
