I’m nearing 20 years as a vegetarian and just now discovering some great meat alternatives, being locked up in a truck for 8 years with only a microwave my diet was not varied, mostly beans, tofu, falafel and store bought meatless burgers.
I’ve just discovered Jackfruit it’s like pulled pork or chicken, I’ve made tacos, sloppy Joe’s and soups with it so far. I but it canned as it’s not easy to find an actual Jackfruit, plus I’ve heard they’re difficult to process.
Today I’m experimenting with a lentils meatball recipe, I’m trying to get the consistency of ground burger, it’s in the oven right now. -

Budgetbytes.com is doing a vegetarian challenge month right now. This site has lots of great, tasty and easy to prepare recipes. Under recipes, there is a pull-down for vegetarian or vegan recipes. And aside from the actual vegetarian recipes, many recipes on budgetbytes could be made vegetarian with easy substitutions–in the comments section on each recipe, people often comment how the made the recipe vegetarian. And as the name of the site implies, there is an aspect of budget and frugality so it fits in with this site.
I’m not vegetarian now (I tried it for ~6 months a few years ago) but I don’t eat a lot of meat.

Over the road truck driver who refused to eat the truck stop food (except for the occasional brunch).

I use Quorn quite a lot (basic chunks and mince). On offer it works out at about 3 to 4 USD a pound. The sausages are okay as well (haven’t tried all the other things like burgers and pies). I’m told it contains flour and maybe eggs- there are vegan versions appearing. I don’t know how available it is in the US at the moment.

I read about Quorn years ago but it was only widely available in the U.K., perhaps I should hunt for some locally.

Where do you buy canned Jackfruit where you live? How much is it?

Both my local co-op and grocery store carry the Native Forest brand, about $4 for a 14oz can.

Funny, I saw the post topic and immediately thought, “Jackfruit.” Then saw that’s the first thing you mentioned. I found some at a Trader Joe’s up the road (maybe $2 for a can) and made some BBQ. It was great. It was a little sweeter than I expected. Seeing your photo, I really want to try a sloppy joe version. I’m not a vegetarian, but am always open to things and tend to not eat a lot of meat.

Flavored Jackfruit is also available but you have to like the flavor and the intensity of that flavor, so far I haven’t so I stick to spicing it up myself.

Jackfruit has the mouthfeal of shredded meat – you can put BBQ sauce on it and it tastes like pulled pork. The only problem is that it doesn’t come close to being a nutrition alternative – it tastes, feels, and looks like meat when prepared correctly, but the nutritional content is completely different from meat.
I saw full Jackfruit for the first time at a local grocery store – it is about the size of a watermelon/pumpkin – huge!

I haven’t tried jackfruit, but I just wanted to chime in that I think Trader Joe’s has the best meatless options for taste & price.
The tofu section in the veggie area also has some good meatless options – chorizo, italian sausages, deli meat (forget if it’s in-house or tofurky).
The frozen section is AMAZING for vegetarians. The meatless breakfast patties taste better than both the Morningstar Farm breakfast sausages, and any meat sausage I have ever had. I’m also a big fan of the spanakopita, greek spiral, cheese enchiladas, cheese & green chile tamales. So many frozen food options for a vegetarian.
That being said, Morningstar Farms does make pretty good bacon for when you’re in the mood for it. Also, the corn dogs and hot dogs are pretty good imitations.
Mother In Law’s Kimchi is good vegan kimchi, if you don’t make your own, but it’s expensive. Stuff like that you have to order online.

@Jay you can also find it (canned) locally at Filipino or South East Asian grocery stores.
@steven-s Wow, I admire your self discipline!! We are partially vegan throughout the year and even then it’s difficult for my willpower, I have to admit.
@inglewood Exactly. When I make BBQ jackfruit I usually mix in some mashed lentils with the shreds to try to add a protein/satiation element. -

Seems to be a trend in the UK for manufacturers to produce “green cuisine” from dried peas.
“We take a specially selected variety of pea and take all the protein goodness (which contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass) from the dried peas. Then we add our unique combination of herbs and spices for a succulent taste experience that’s Rich in Protein and a Source of Fibre and Iron.” (quote from Bird’s Eye website)
I tried three of these “succulent taste experiences”, then I went out and bought some mouthwash to get rid of the taste.

Jackfruit is a pretty interesting — supposedly in parts of asia where it grows wild, in times of famine people can eat jackfruit and essentially live off of it entirely for weeks because its nutrition is so diverse. When I was vegetarian I did a lot of tofu, seitan, etc. I find the brand really counts, bad meat alternatives can be really bad, good ones really good. If you come to the Bay area, you’ll find some incredible options everywhere.
