Happy Holidays, everyone! I didn’t reach my goal this week due to the holidays. I’m going to take off 3-4 months due to a divorce that started about 2 months ago. I feel weird dumping this on here but some of you might wonder so why not just say it.
I am still living at home and will till about February. My wife and I are still good friends, albeit, with a lot of ups and downs. We are fine. The kids are fine. One is 18, one 16 – they are really fine… the 10 year old is doing well. The transition is a long one and that seems to help.
I might get to list during this time but it seems best to put new listings on hold as I just have a lot to purge or pack and it is pretty important that I focus as much creative energy on the house search as my options initially seem limited. And, of course, the creative energy in making a change in my relationships with my family.
I’ll see you come March. 🙂
Marty

Good advice, Jay. Thanks. I definitely got too emotionally involved for about 20 minutes in my head. Good to hear your approach.
What do you do with a buyer who gives you an offer $350 lower than your asking, then you offer $100 below your asking, and then the buyer goes up on his first offer by $20? That’s right – a whole $20.
A Bvlgari  wrist watch. I am sure I will not get $750 – but it’s my listed asking price. This buyer offers $400. I tell him that it’s only been up about 5 days and the lowest I’ll go is $650. (I am willing to take $500 but I don’t tell him that.) He offers $420. I say to myself, “You jerk!” Actually, I called him something else but let’s keep this PG. Anyway, I bit my tongue and sent him another offer and said “Thank you for your offer. $500 is my last offer.”
I was direct and tried to pull out any attitude from my written words. I guess I am being too emotional about it but I would never low-ball someone that much if I was in his shoes. I would just not counter. I would be respectful and just decline.
Anyone have any suggestions on better wording or maybe another creative method? Would anyone have been willing to play along with this buyer a little more than I did? Or am I right and it is just common courtesy that you don’t go in increments of $20 when you are dealing with a difference of $250 between two offers? It doesn’t make sense, right? Especially after I came down a whole $100! Or are there just some people out there that want to go that many rounds of  countering? Maybe it’s me.
Funny you should say that, Jay, as they already had a watcher that I sent an offer to – now that I know what price seems realistic. I think I had them about $20-$30 too high for what they are… just not my speciality. 🙂
Wow – wow! Nice job, Jay and Ryanne (hey, you two!) Here’s my week. It sucked. 🙂

I’m laughing a lot over here – thanks Jay. I was not responsible for any IATSE strike. I work somewhere pretty small as far as stage work – and I only do the audiovisual end these days… but we are non-union.
As far as the numbers, though they be small, this Forum helps me stay steady. It helps me keep my word to myself. I came close to not making it this week.
Thanks, Jay!

Hey, Jay. I could be wrong but if there would have been no signature and the buyer said he didn’t receive it and wanted his money back then I would have been out. I am probably more suspicious than I should be but I’ve had a few over the years and I do my best anytime I smell something fishy. I realize that in the big game, one sale is not a lot so to be excessively suspicious is not helpful.

Potential Scam Thwarted: I goat an immediate payment at full asking price on a typewriter from a buyer who had created his account same day as purchase. I emailed him asking him to confirm his address and advised him I would pay for a “signature required” on my dime. Interestingly, he replied he didn’t need the item anymore and requested that I cancel the sale.
