Temudgin, Totally agree. If I don’t find something a bit interesting I can’t hardly sell it, and if I do buy it, it sits in my death piles for a while. The hunt and research is what it is all about for me and where I get the most thrill from this.
Hi Sally, Regarding what to look for, it’s tough to pin down. There are literally thousands of different types out there, and usually there is a collector for just about any one. THere are a few things to look out for, but as I’m sure you know, there’s always exceptions. Generally, lures prior to the 1960’s that are made of wood with glass eyes are some of the better sellers. That said, there are old metal lures, lures without eyes, early plastic lures, that go for hundreds or thousands of dollars. There is no great single resource that I’ve found for researching them, and eBay is rife with errors, so not necessarily a great one. If you ever get you a good stash, I’d start with finding a copy of Fishing Tackle Antiques and Collectibles, by Karl White. Not the best for history and information, but a great tool for identification.

Just learned a new term from Steve: Platter Pak.
Had no idea those were worth anything. I just gave one away with a bunch of scratched and moldy 45’s.

MDC Galleries asked:
Do any of you go on the first day [usually huge crowds or waiting lines], or late in the second day [usually no lines or waiting], create the “piles” of items you want and then haggle and bargain hard?
My wife and I frequently go on Fridays as we’re usually too busy with kids on the weekends. We live in the DC Metro area and there are always multiple going on. Like others, mostly we find overpriced stuff, but there always seems to be nuggets to mine for a good price. Obviously valuable stuff is priced to the moon, but as I learn more I find I am gaining niche knowledge areas that the pricers don’t have, and we’re still able to find bargains. And, we have a few favorite Estate Sale companies that keep to prices reasonable even on the first day, usually outside of the high $ neighborhoods where the primary interest is in emptying the house for sale rather than making a mint off the stuff. We try to never pay more than 25% of what an item could be sold for and usually come out way below. We don’t really have a sweet spot and are pretty opportunistic. Sometimes, if there is something great that is really overpriced, we may try and squeeze in a return visit on Sundays to clean up, but that is rare.
If I hadn’t been a Scavenger Life listener, I’d have never known there was a problem. I was on vacation when this occurred and only became aware when I returned and was getting back up to speed on the site. I didn’t get the above email from eBay and still haven’t received any notification from eBay that the issue even occurred. Using the link provided by Ryanne I found 47 listings out of 614 with only one picture. I posted this on the week’s podcast thread but thought I’d repost here for those who might not see it there. I called eBay yesterday. The person I spoke with didn’t have any information and put my case in a queue for IT Support. No call back from support, but got this email:
Thank you for contacting eBay. We always love to hear from our customers! This email is in response to your inquiry regarding images that had been deleted from your listings. Unfortunately, due to a site issue, images have been deleted and are unable to be recovered. You must edit each listings in order to add the missing photos back onto the listings. We do apologize for any inconvenience. Have a great day!
What a completely inadequate response. I’ve followed up with and email and await further response to see if I can get any recompense.
Thanks to Ryanne and Jay for providing this forum, otherwise I’d unaware.

Luka’s Treasure TroveGuess I’m not getting a call back from ebay on my photo issue. Just got an email from this with this:

Seems a bit weak for a response to such a significant issue. Guess I’ll be calling back to complain.
A big thank you for posting the link to the photo scan. I was on vacation when the picture fiasco happened and wasn’t even aware of it until I was going through the forum on my return. I was just starting to go through my listings to see if I was affected this morning when I saw the mention fo the scan in weeks podcast post. About 48 of my 614 listings had lost all but their main photo. Thank goodness I save my photos and am able to pull them again. Of course, its still very time consuming to guess what I named them and add them back. Called eBay and they have put me in a queue with support for a call back with no ETA. Seems every listing that was renewing on the 23 or 24 of the month was affected. Can’t imagine the hassle that is causing some of the larger stores.
Best,
Mike
Luka’s Treasure TrovePosted the link for only the sig picture. Here is the whole link:

The buyer insisted they never received any type of pay notice from eBay, so we agreed to cancel the sale and try again. Originally I had the item posted as best offer, but reposted as buy it now at our agreed price. Never heard from the buyer again. I believe that removing the best offer option also removes the ability to request an invoice as I have my store set to require immediate payment.
An eBay rep I spoke with suggested that there may be buyers out there that are using the request invoice option to trick sellers into sending them invoices without shipping or avoid higher GSP fees.
Hi, Thanks for the input. Yes, I did get these at Alexandria Auctions. I felt like the price was worth the risk as I purchased the whole lot for $40. If they are authentic, which I believe they are, this should be more than $1000 worth. I’ll check out the places you suggested and see if there is anyone that could authenticate. I noticed there is a Pre-Columbian Society in DC also, at which I may put in an inquiry.
Best, Mike
Habnab, Thanks for taking a look. I took a look at some examples and it’s very close to what you suggested, and it led to to another group that is just south of the Wari, the Tiwanaka, from the Bolivia and Peru area. I have some other pieces that match the ceremonial cups, or kero, that were used there. Even the designs seem very similar. So, you set me in the right direction. Here is the whole set.
If the dates match up these are possibly in the 600 – 1000 AD range.
You have my appreciation.
Mike
I seem to be the only one caught out on this. Guess I was just naive to think that I shouldn’t have to do anything and that it would be taken care of programmatically. I read through the community post and it doesn’t mention that there is any actual action suggested for the seller. A note of caution would have been appreciated to warn new sellers that they could avoid being caught out by processing orders prior to midnight on the 20th.
Perhaps I should have posted this under the eBay suggestions instead.
I received the notification that the rate increase was coming, but the note didn’t indicate there was anything we needed to do differently because of it. If warned, I might have acted differently. I feel they could have, at a minimum, communicated better. Better would have been to pass along the expected shipping increase to the buyer, they would have at least had the option to choose to pay or not. This way I/we are stuck.
Just to follow up, the radio sold within 5 hours or so for $99.95. Another to keep an eye out for.
Experiencing this issue as I write. Took a bunch of photos using the ebay app on my phone and saved the listing, then went to my computer to finish, only to see that all 7 of the images have “image error” over the top of them. ALso had another draft today that lost its pictures. Ugh.
