I’ve seen similar items to this used at a fiberglass insulation factory.
They had a cylindrical tumbler that was filled with “sausage” and “ball” shaped metal- they would then dump recycled glass bottles/jars into this large tumbler machine, and then spin it around with the weighted metal and glass. The glass would then get pulverized into a sand like material by the metal objects. They would then separate the metal objects, labels and any other foreign material from the glass sand. The glass sand they would re-melt to make fiberglass insulation.
Does anyone offer gift wrapping with their listings? Just curious as I had a couple requests last year to wrap items.
I did it for no charge, but wondered if anyone has this as an advertised service with their listings, or under additional shipping options/services?
Bitcoin just doesn’t have the return for me – and is unregulated which is another scary factor. And the amount of illegal activity tied to it may get the government involved one day to shut it down – it may not, but that is why I would be cautious.
I rather invest in inventory – most items I know I will make 2x to 5x or more on, and very rarely do I take a complete loss – and if I do, it is one item, not my entire diverse inventory.
Good luck though!
The holiday season is real tricky – it really is up to you how much work you want to put in. I found that sales are steady all through December – even between Christmas and New Years as people spend money they got for gifts.
Last year I made some good sales the days leading up to Christmas (20-23rd) but had to put in some extra effort as they wanted overnight shipping quotes and had to meet cut-off times at carriers to get people the items they bought by the 24th.
I would recommend if you want to take time off, do it from the evening on the 24th through the next couple days – sales will be busy still, but there isn’t expectations to deliver for the 24th, and the Post Office or other carrier has days off that you can use as a shipping delay excuse (if needed).
My sales are going crazy – hope yours are as well! I pre-planned to load up on inventory in September this year and it’s paying off more then expected. I’m finding it is worth the effort to focus on listing and sales at the moment, and the scavenging has also been good as of late!
Are the buttons on jeans opposite for men’s and women’s like shirts/jackets?
Here in Canada we seem to be a few steps ahead of the U.S. – in the last few years we’ve had Target go out of business, and Sears will be closing all their stores here by the end of the year. We really don’t have many department stores left other then very high end or Walmart.
There was two malls in my area – the one has been closed for years and is about to be torn down, the other just closed in the summer and will be torn down as well. Everything seems to be consolidating into one mega-mall to serve a larger region.
One of the Goodwill stores in my area has a bitter cashier who always tells me things are priced wrong (too low) and calls the manager over to make sure “she can sell them” at the price on the tag. The manager sticks to the tag price, but it is constantly annoying to deal with the price checks.
I block anyone that is annoying. They are not worth the time and effort. And if they do make a purchase, they will keep bugging you afterwards about the condition, how the item works, etc etc.
Seeing it as well, using IE 11 also…but I’ve had issues on other websites lately with IE 11 since it is out of date.
Thanks for sharing!
This guy seems to be able find product in high volume – I haven’t been too successful at that with buying at retailers. I find the odd clearance item to flip, but never in this type of volume.
The other thing I don’t get with a story like this is why would you share your secrets? Talking about one of kind or rare items you find once or twice to flip on here is OK, but your daily bread and butter items that anyone can compete with you and replicate isn’t sometime I would share openly on CNBC!
I tend to get mis-stalked because I unfortunately have a very common name (even in high school another student had the same first/last name!!!).
I have an unlisted number, but that doesn’t stop creditors looking for people with my name, or just random calls from people looking for someone else with my name (people who went to school, work with, or otherwise know someone with my same name). I’ve had women call looking for ex’s, people send me weird threats, and even birthday well wishes at random times of the year!
I don’t have social media, but people I work with always send “friend requests” to others with the same name online and ask why I don’t want to be their friend…
My dad also has a very common name, and a few years ago the courts called asking if he would provide a DNA sample for a paternity case for a teenage kid. He was in his 70’s, and they were looking for someone in their 30’s – but it was an interesting family moment for a minute until it was sorted out!
Airports use to be a pain, but I was able to get TSA Pre-Check to save me the continued secondary and beyond inspections before flights.
The good thing is that if anyone tried to find me, or Googled my name, they would have a hard time figuring out which one I am…
In my area (mind you I am in hockey mad Canada) we have a lot of “skate exchanges” where you trade in skates for other used skates for a small charge, and most carry other hockey and other sports equipment on consignment.
A lot of parents use them for hockey equipment – a new set of equipment is easily $1000 to $2000 – and if your kids grow out of them every year, it gets expensive. Usually you can bring in your old stuff for a larger size and only need to spend a few hundred to move up sizes.
I use to take oddball items that are hard to ship (hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks, bowling balls) but found the profit margin wasn’t worthwhile in my area.
They also kill the online market for used hockey equipment – the only items I tend to sell are vintage leather (pre-1970’s), retro looking helmets (1970s-1980s), or the odd high-end brand to someone in the Southern U.S. or non-hockey country like Australia where they don’t have used sports equipment stores carrying hockey equipment.
I’m atheist so I don’t pray…but I wish for bad luck and bad karma on the people who rip me off!
I have an issue with a buyer that before buying an item (a stereo), wanted to know a lot of details about the condition of the instruction manual with it. When they got the stereo, they claimed it didn’t work and I had to pay for shipping to send it back. I get it back, works fine, and it is missing the paper manual….they live less than an hour drive away…gets my mind rolling…
But…I need to take solace in knowing I am a better person – the people who do this type of thing are pathetic and the lowest of the low – their lives usually are horrible.
These people usually are habitual – and they must be very stupid to use their home address or address connected to them to have merchandise sent to them and swapped out.
I use to spend the time filing a complaint with their local police department – in hope that others did the same and one day they would get busted. Problem with that is that when they do get busted, the police want information, want to talk to you, etc. and if the case goes to trial you get contacted from all over the place. You would need to determine if you want to get involved for the price of the item.
I sometimes wonder what these people would do face to face with me – I’m 6’6″ and built like a linebacker…LOL…
Oh well, for every buyer like this, I average about 300 others that are great…
11/02/2017 at 11:19 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 332: Share Your Extreme Scavenging Confession #24826@Jay @Mark S – fixing things is very easy these days. If you find appliances on the side of the road or anywhere they usually have something small wrong with them that you can easily find a YouTube video with instructions to fix. The good thing about this is others want to fix stuff as well! So they need parts…
I make a lot of money each month scavenging appliances – and stripping them down. Simple things like the timer (dial) on the dryer will get $50 to $100 used. Also off a dryer you can take off the lint screen, basic dial covers, switches, handles, etc. and they are easy $10-$25 or more. If you do the same with ovens, dishwashers, washing machines, etc. it is easy money. I also know a guy who will pick-up the carcass/remains and share the scrap money with me – which is usually another $20.
I’ve just started getting into automotive parts and kitchen/bathroom faucets as I find them – take off the parts that don’t look good, and sell the parts that are good. Last week I sold the spray head off a broken Delta Kitchen faucet for $80.
Other items I’m starting to research are BBQs – they are plentiful at the end of summer, and some high-end ones have parts that get good money.
I recommend that if anyone finds an appliance on the curb in their town, grab it, look up the model number, find a parts list, and sell the parts that are worthwhile.
@Ryanne – saw the same documentary and was laughing at what was in the suitcase. I’ve seen a couple shows on baggage auctions and I like how everyone rushes out to the parking lot with their baggage and busts it open immediately to disappointment.
I always wonder what people expect to find in a baggage auction – I know that when I travel, I always pack light and anything I don’t want to lose I put in my carry-on. Anything in a checked bag would be disappointing to lose, but not a major loss and not of value to anyone else. I’m not sure if anyone would want my used clothing, half stick of deodorant, or other used toiletries.
The only value I can see is if the bag you can visually see is worth something itself – then it may be worth the gamble on what is inside.
I also would feel guilty about buying someone’s lost stuff. If I found any info in the bag that would identify the previous owner, I would contact them to see if they want it back – even though legally I wouldn’t need to, I would feel guilty taking the stuff without asking…
