This will be my first year filing taxes for eBay sales, just wondering about how different people handle their sales tax?
1) Do you include it in your eBay settings to charge it for buyers in your state?
2) or do you not charge it to anyone, but figure it out later from sales within your state?
I don’t think I’ve ever been charged sales tax when buying from anyone on eBay, and I’d consider it a bummer if I did, since it would raise the price of the item from what I thought it was. That’s why I’d like to just figure it out later, when I need to pay and just eat the tax for my in state buyers.
I don’t have a resellers license, from what I’ve read, despite the advantages, I don’t think I’m going to get one. Does this have an impact one way or the other how you collect/report your sales tax?
Thanks very much for any feedback.
I’m also in California and thinking about sales tax, I don’t charge this on my sales, and so am always a little bummed when a sale comes from within the state.
I just downloaded GoDaddy Bookkeeping, you can generate a report of your sales by state with it, it’s not from eBay directly, or what the sales tax should have been, but it’s a clean & exact record of eBay sales. It would at least show where you’re pulling your numbers from, that’s what I plan to use for now.
Agree… right now I’m using the sku box to remind myself about things pertaining to costs, like cog, how much it is retail, the range something similar sold for already, etc. this helps me decide about offers & also if I’m relisting/selling it similar & adjusting the price, so yes, it would help if I had this info. on the go, rather than needing to wait until I was back with the computer.
Agree!
@Amatino, thanks for your reply 🙂 I have my unpaid item assistant set up for 4 days, & yes, it’s a drawn out time, waiting those 8 days.
Do you have special settings on your “buyer requirements”, like accepting/not accepting buyers without a paypal account, certain # of unpaid items strikes within so many months, etc.?
I’ll probably meet somewhere in the middle of no restrictions and too many restrictions. Just wondering what’s been working for people.
This is not my worst, rather my creepiest positive feedback received. I guess it’s not that creepy, or bad at all, but still my first reaction was “eww”.
“Very cute and sexy. GF loves it, thanks.”
I’ve also gotten 2 positives saying something wasn’t clean and something wasn’t NWOT. It REALLY bothered me at the time, because both weren’t true. But Jay is right, I don’t care at all now, and those feedbacks are buried under truly positive feedbacks now.
It’s been really few and far between having “grumpy buyers”, I’m really grateful for that, it’s pretty amazing in fact, that most buyers are pretty great.

Ryanne & Jay, thank you always for the podcast, it makes me happy when I see that a new one is up each week.
July 16-22, 2017
Total Items in Store: 328
Items Sold: 15
Cost of Items Sold: approx. $19
Total Sales: $215.46 (not including shipping costs)
Highest Price Sold: $35 (nice set of women’s pjs)
Average Price Sold: $15.39
Returns: 1 (for fit)
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $47.56
Number of items listed this week: 27Much slower week, but expected it, since I’m focusing more on going through inventory than listing this week. In traffic on Friday, had alot of time to think about work approaches. Right now I have some leeway with what I need to bring in, so I’m going to focus away from regular auctions & running so many sales which I had been doing. Sometimes it felt fine, but other times it felt like I was just going over the same territory too frequently. Other things in life were not being taken care of because of the amount of time I spent every night running sales and auctions continually, and less listing was getting done. Instead I’m going to focus on sourcing and listing what I get each week, catch up with bookkeeping, and getting new bookkeeping systems in place for the rest of the year. Because I get most of my inventory from “the bins”, I’m also starting to pay more attention to individual cost of goods, by weight. I’m not that fast of a lister at all, so I’m going to put my time in trying to grow my store steadily & strongly and see how that compares to the fast auctions.
Have a good week everyone.
ChristineR – I love Thriftycast! Their instagram is also hilarious. Ashana – I binge listened to My Favorite Murder recently, so inappropriately entertaining, & addicting. I kind of had to stop though, it was making me scared at home… checking that I locked doors, windows, etc. ha ha.
I’m always on the lookout for outstanding podcasts too, for me lately, the more unproduced, the better. I also listen to reseller youtube videos in the background while working, KaylaCrystal is a pretty good one, Crystal is pretty funny in particular.
For those of you into contemporary art, there’s a podcast called “The Jew and the Lotus”, often bawdy, but also informative and entertaining, 2 “gallerists”, one in Los Angeles, one in Portland, talk about art goings on.

07/18/2017 at 3:52 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 319: Being Adults, Making Decisions #20453P.S. I’ve sold one pair of Tom’s, yes a lot of interest right away, easy sale. Maybe another reason why people are into them is because they’re vegan shoes. My old neighbors were vegan, and they were limited on their shoe buying because of this, and they did buy Tom’s on eBay. When I sent the Tom’s I sold, I started to put them in a clear sealing bag, but it seemed to trap and enhance the not so great used shoe smell, even though I cleaned them, so I think I wrapped them in tissue paper or something instead, they needed to have air circulation during their trip.

Cost of items sold: approx. $46
Total sales (not incl. selling costs): 394.62
Highest price sold: $100 VTG Disney Bedspread
Average price sold: $19.08
International Sales: 1
Returns – 1 for fit
Money spent on new inventory this week: $89.35
Number of items listed this week: 21Posting numbers is a good weekly exercise for me, today it makes me publicly embarrassed about how little I listed, and motivated to do better. This week I’m weeding through inventory, will donate some and send in a thredup bag of things I don’t feel super strong about and that haven’t gotten much interest. I often feel the tug between wanting to get the number of active listings up vs. the urge to dump a bunch of stuff. I’ll weed, but keep sourcing weekly and make sure what I’m bringing home are only things I really want to deal with and store. I also want to cross post what I can to my fledgling etsy store.
The Disney bedspread sale (to Japan) was a great end of the week finale. I had that bedspread on my kitchen floor for weeks as it went through multiple rounds of stain fighting. When I felt max force Oxyclean could do all it could do, I listed it & it sold within a few hours. I was a little worried when I saw that the buyer had private feedback, but when I saw that their email address had “Disney” incorporated into it, I kinda knew all would be fine for some reason. Here’s to a good week for everyone.

Total items in store: 361
Items sold: 49
Cost of items sold: approx. $78
Total sales: $480.51 (not incl. selling costs)
Highest price sold: $99.99 (Ralph Lauren equestrian toile fabric)!
Average price sold: $9.80
International Sales: 0
Returns – 0
Money spent on new inventory this week: $0 (usually I go once a week, but this week, low on funds for sourcing and determined to just go through my death piles… also organized my closet and listed some things from there)
Number of items listed this week: 25This was a better week for me than usual, was motivated to try to get sales up & did a lot of fiddling daily… auctions, sales, removed all buyer restrictions and accepted all non-insane offers. I think the fiddling definitely helps, but also feels like a waste of time. It is the best use of time to just list, but maybe while a small store is growing, if you need the sales to come in, other things have to be done I think.
