Week of 3/26-4/1
Total Items in Store: 862
Items Sold: 21 (1 Amazon)
Total Sales: $579.38
Cost of Items Sold: $46
Highest Item Sold: $50 – Vintage US Merchant Marine Academy Crest Porcelain Stein
Avg Sale Price: $27.59
Money Spend on New Inventory: $0
Number of Items Listed This Week: 0Pretty good week considering I had extended handling time at the beginning as we came home from vacation and also putting little to no work into my store as I get back into the swing of things. I mentioned the Merchant Marine stein on the Wednesday What Sold thread – such a cool piece!
In store milestones, I crossed $100k in gross sales this week. Started my store in summer 2013, less than 4 years ago. First purchase ever with the only intent to sell was a c1930s Gillette Safety Razor in it’s original case. Stormville Flea in upstate NY, paid $30 and sold for $120. That early success got me hooked and finding this community very close to the beginning inspired me to continue.
Continuing to monitor the perfomance of my promoted listings. This week had 6 sales that were promoted for $137.97 in sales and $6.62 in fees associated (4.8%). Since starting promoted listings, I’ve had 38 sales for $1,312.36 and $72 in fees (5.5%). I may pause the promotions to see if there is a dip – it’s still unclear if I would have sold the same amounts without the promotions.
Hopefully will get back to listing and maybe sourcing later this week.

03/31/2017 at 9:13 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Spectacles, Water Ski, Prince 45, Pattern kits, Photo Enlarger #15677I love your poster sales (these plus the other ones you’ve talked about over the past couple months). Love when “serious collectors” email me about prices. I always simply say that my price is what I need to get for the item and if they can find it elsewhere for cheaper it’s totally find by me. I’ve been tempted in the past to email after something sells for asking price, but I try to take the high road and leave it be. 🙂

03/31/2017 at 8:45 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Spectacles, Water Ski, Prince 45, Pattern kits, Photo Enlarger #15675Didn’t post last week since we were away in London, so these are a few things that sold over the past 2 weeks or so. In addition to the below, sold a bunch of records since 3/15 (the last time I posted what sold) – 18 for $496 (average $27.58 each) – highlighted by Iggy & The Stooges, Kiss Double Platinum, The Cure Kiss Me Kiss Me, Rush 2112, Dio Holy Diver, Rolling Stone Sticky Fingers, and Van Morrison Moondance. That cache of records I bought about a month ago continues to pay off.
c1970s Anson Steel Pen & Pencil Set with Bell Systems Logo
Part of a box lot, so couldn’t have paid more than $1.50-$2 for this. Looked like a boring cheap pen & pencil set until I noticed an early 1970s Bell Systems logo on the tips. Sold for $30.(8) Vintage Silver Cup Fo-Mac Clay Roller Skate Wheels
I don’t know why I was drawn to these at an auction. Had to have them for some reason. Splurged $8 on them. Sold for $40 best offer after a month or so.Vintage US Merchant Marine Academy Crest Porcelain Stein Mug Nude Mermaid Handle
I love these old porcelain souvenir steins. Always pick them up for $1-$5 if they feature universities or military things. This one paid $1 for at an estate sale, sold for $50 within a month. Love the nude mermaid handle.1978 Walt Disney Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs Cassette in Thai
I bought this at the estate sale of a hoarder. Boxes & boxes of stuff stacked to the ceiling. She had tons of Disney stuff. Most was super common, or McDonald’s Happy Meals toys, etc. But I did find a few gems. This was one of them I took a chance on. Apparently it’s a cassette of Snow White. I identified it at Thai based on the manufacturer, but a buyer contacted me and said the writing looked Korean. I told him that if he was not satisfied or mislabeled I’d accept a return if he wasn’t happy. Buyer was amazingly pleased once he received it. Bought for $1, sold for $40.NWT Jonathan Adler Icon Leather iPad Pro Case
I got this and a bunch more at a Jonathan Adler sample sale here in NYC. NWT and the $158 retail price. I paid $3 each. They sat forever because they were for an older generation iPad. However, the brand new iPad Pros happen to be the same size and the old iPad 2, so I changed some keywords and the title and they’ve started to sell. This one sold for $40 when I had a half price day on certain old items. Also, the subject of the show will sure be interesting to hear. I’ve mentioned before that my brother sells on Amazon full time. I believe he crossed $300k in gross sales last year, netting a bit under $100k after COGS, fees, taxes.
Week of 3/19-3/25
Total Items in Store: 878
Items Sold: 20 (2 Amazon)
Total Sales: $502.92
Cost of Items Sold: $59
Highest Item Sold: $39.99 (Kiss Double Platinum record)
Average price sold: $25.15
Returns: 0
Money Spent on new inventory: $0
Number of Items Listed This Week: 0Just got home about an hour ago from London. I had extended handling time, so these sales are actually pretty good – just finished packing 11 items. Arrived in London on the day of the terror attacks, so that was pretty surreal. Otherwise, the trip was awesome. Our AirBnB was in an incredibly convenient location to walk to Westminister/Big Ben/Parliament/Buckingham Palace, Notting Hill, Abbey Road, etc. Short-ish trip for my wife’s birthday, but great to get away.
Sales were pretty good, although everything was low-ish dollar and/or bread & butter. That being said, COGS were also quite low right around 11% which is good for me.
Not looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, but looking forward to hearing your voices again on the show on the way to work!
03/22/2017 at 9:47 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #15047Is the package sealed? If so, there should be no question on its authenticity with the buyer.
03/21/2017 at 3:22 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #14996I can promote anything, but only up to 500 items per promotion – so I’ve basically set up different promotions for different categories to see if there’s a sweet spot. I’m not 100% that this is helping or if it’s just a placebo. I’m driving a ton more traffic to my pages (using the performance dashboard).
Here are some stats:
— 1/1 – 2/8 (39 days) – my listings appeared in 474k searches and I got 6.7k listing views (1.4% click through) and a total of $3,034 sales.
— 2/9 – 3/18 (39 days) – my listings appeared in 599k searches and I got 12.7k listing views (2.7% click through) and a total of $4,149 sales.I’m showing up in 26% more searches (I credit that to better titles & more interesting items) but getting 90% more click throughs (this I credit to listing promotions, showing up higher in ranks) and my sales are 37% higher.

03/20/2017 at 12:17 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #14886I use calculated shipping for everything in the US and International – and I rarely if ever have problems. If anything, the only thing would be if a certain item is restricted to that country – for example, Israel wouldn’t allow shipping perfume.
03/19/2017 at 5:32 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #14830No shame in a small store, especially if it’s only your part time inventory. Your COGS are amazing -just over 5%! I’m happy between 10%-20% 🙂
03/19/2017 at 3:47 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #14826Also, after the convos a couple weeks ago about Promoted Listings, I tried out a test. Over the past 14 days, I’ve had 15 sales from Promoted Listings for a total of $660 and paid a combined $37 in fees (about 5%). Those 15 sales account for about 32% of my sales. So far so good. I’m using my TRS savings to fund Promoted Listings.
03/19/2017 at 3:35 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 302: How to Deal with Dreaded eBay Scammers Lurking Everywhere!! #14823Just by the title, this sounds like a super interesting show. Will be all ears tomorrow morning on the way to work.
Week 3/12/17 – 3/18/17
Total items in store: 875
Items sold: 22 (2 Amazon)
Cost of items sold: $157
Total sales: $1,051.42
Highest price sold: $200 (1930s Tiffany clock) & $450 (lot of 5 TDK MA-XG cassettes)
Average price sold: $47.79
Returns: 0 (although I had to refund someone when I couldn’t find the item)
Money spent on new inventory this week: $265
Items listed: 29Really a great week of sales. It started hot last Sunday morning and didn’t really cool off. The Tiffany Clock was a big sale on Sunday to kick the week off and then the 5x TDK MA-XG cassettes that I talked about on the What Sold post sold on Monday – Jay was shocked that I listed a cassette for $120 and I jumped on a $90/each offer I got on Monday for all 5 ($450 total). But also had the first ever item I can’t find. It was a Whiting & Davis gold mesh bag, sold for $60. I looked everywhere it should be and everywhere it shouldn’t be. Wrote an extremely apologetic note to the buyer who was super nice about it. Simply asked for a refund but said to contact her if it doesn’t turn up.
Didn’t go out to any sales this weekend, but I did find a guy on CL selling some super high end records. I paid up, but it takes my listings to a whole new level. Led Zeppelin Mothership sealed box set listed for $150, Iggy Pop Lust for Life true A1/B1 first pressing listed for $120, several Kiss albums, minty fresh Rolling Stones, and more. While I paid $200 for the group, have them listed for over $640.
Headed to London on Wednesday-Sunday for a long weekend & my wife’s birthday – flights paid for by eBay sales. Very excited to get away.

Post ’em! There are sellers of all levels here! That, plus we were all small sellers at one point (I still consider myself a small time seller). But the real benefit to posting your number and what sold is learning from each other – you probably know something about a particular topic that I don’t know and I can learn from you. Same vice versa, hopefully you learn something from what I post.
