05/15/2017 at 12:05 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 310: Am I Selling on eBay the Wrong Way? #18029
Week May 7th-May 13th, 2017
Total Items in Store: 866
Items Sold: 15 (2 Amazon, 1 Bonanza)
Total Sales: $560.90
Cost of Items Sold: $43 (7.7% of sales)
Highest Price Sold: $164 (1st ed Charlie & The Chocolate Factory)
Average Price Sold: $37.39
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $90
Number of items listed this week: 18
Promoted listings test: 5 sales, $237.36 (42% of total sales), $13.30 fees (5.6% of sales)Another solid week. Volume of sales is down a good bit (have been 20+ for several weeks now), but the total of $560+ is still quite good for me on an “average” basis. And my COGS were some of the best of the year (I usually shoot for under 20%, so 7.7% is amazing for me).
Sometimes it’s amazing what you sell and when you sell it. The Charlie & The Chocolate Factory first edition on eBay has been through numerous sales, as much as 40% off since there seemed to be little to no interest in it. But it sold for full price (minus the small discount for being on Bonanza).
Pick of the week goes to a deck of cards I picked up for probably $0.25 (it was part of a “pile” I made at an estate sale for $10). I always pick up decks of cards as is, so that wasn’t a change, but these were in French, dated, and feature “risque” paintings of the Kings/Queens/Jacks. Based on research, this is an incredibly rare maker and set. Currently only other deck like it listed is $350, so I put mine up for $325 and would take any offer over $200.

05/08/2017 at 10:23 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 309: Scrapping and Parting – Interview w/ Eric in Ottawa Canada #17650Definitely. I like to balance being in line at the best sales on the first day with being there later in the day on the big/hoarder sales. Gives me a good balance of quality & quantity. If I worked from home, I’d probably do the same as you on the early weekdays. Currently, I’m held to Saturday & Sundays only for the most part.

Total Items in Store: 861
Items Sold: 22 (5 Amazon)
Total Sales: $1,091.42
Cost of Items Sold: $139 (12.7% of sales)
Highest Price Sold: $400 (1960s The Beatles 12″ Record Case)
Average Price Sold: $49.61
Returns: 0
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: $80
Number of items listed this week: 25
Promoted listings test: 7 sales, $359.98 (33% of total sales), $20.55 fees (5.7% of sales)Another really great week for me. Would have still been good without the big sale, but that certainly helped.
I got the Beatles record case from a guy that sources & picks himself, but hates eBay. He usually just sets up on his stoop and sells on nice days. Since I bought from him a couple times, he told me that he’d call me first when he gets something good. He told me about this Beatles record tote – I’ve seen them at the 45rpm/7″ size, but never large. Even on eBay only one had sold in the past year. I paid $40 for it, expecting about $150 until I did my research. Listed high at $500 since it was the only full sized version listed(thanks Ryanne!) and jumped at the $400 offer.
Other big sales that fueled the week included a 48 Star Flag and several nice LP sales.

48 Star Bulldog Bunting American 4’x6′ Flag
You guys know I love flags! Bought for $10 at an estate sale, sold for $200 this evening.(2) Vintage 1920s Louis Sherry New York CanCo Tin Metal Hinged Boxes
Love vintage advertising tins. Had one of these a while back that sold for like $30, so when I found two together I jumped on them for $1 or so. Sold for $34.
(3) 1940s/50s Boxes of Disney Donald Duck Straws
Every so often, I make a mistake. Found these at a sale of a Disney collector and thought I hit pay dirt. Paid up $30 for the three boxes. Finally sold after nearly three years for $25.c1950s Zippo Lighter Empty Box
Recently bought this at a sale. There was a modern Zippo in the box, mismatched. Listed them separately and this empty box sold for $31. The Zippo is still listed.Vintage Givenchy L’Interdit Perfume Empty Bottle
I’ve scored with empty perfume bottles in the past, especially high end brands like this. Bought this and another empty bottle at a sale for $5. The other one sold for over $100 because it was Baccarat crystal. This was a lower end bottle, ended up selling for $20.2001 Cartier Watch Instructions
Incredibly expensive watches, but they were missing from a sale. Took a chance on two sets of these booklets for $5 each. Took a while, but this one sold for $30 best offer. Did this one sell because it was stamped as purchased at Trump Tower? (the other one was from Saks Fifth Avenue)1990s Tommy Hilfiger Long Sleeve Box Logo T-Shirt
Only because of this show do I know about RN numbers. Found this and did some quick field research before checking out and the RN number showed it was true early 1990s vintage. Paid up for it at $10, but sold rather quickly for $75 full price. Buyer also paid $35 for express shipping to TX. Hope they enjoy it!05/03/2017 at 3:16 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 307: Getting Ready to Sell While Traveling #17432Quick update on this – after a few calls to eBay, they couldn’t figure out why there was no code for me, so they manually sent me one at the end of last week for $50 and I ordered my supplies. They arrived yesterday. Also arriving today was a NEW $50 supplies code… will be ordering more supplies this evening!
Wooo, exciting! SL podcast on my way home for the first time instead of Monday morning!
Something to look forward to!Week April 23-29
Items In Store: 857
Items Sold: 27 (11 Amazon)
Total Sales: $887.32 ($425.89 Amazon)
Avg Selling Price: $32.86 ($38.72 Amazon, $28.84 eBay)
Highest Price sold: $75 (1990s Tommy Hilfiger long sleeve tee)
Cost of Goods Sold: $129 (14.5% of my total sales)
Promoted Listings Experiment: 9 sales (56% of my eBay sales) for $215.96, $12.80 fees (5.9% of sales)
Money spent on new inventory: $85
New Listings: 13Wow. Didn’t feel this busy. Maybe because I was selling a lot of multiples on my Amazon items. Anyway, pretty pleased with the week – high volume for me, above average weekly sales, low COGS.
While I don’t have kids or anything like that, I do balance my time with eBay & my wife/family; eBay & my 50+ hr real job; eBay & life experiences. I do find eBay getting in the way every so often & vice versa. But that’s why I like selling – I can turn it off & on as I see fit. I can build up a big inventory over the course of 4-5 straight weeks of picking and let it go on autopilot (did that from mid-December through end of February) so I can enjoy the outdoors or go on a vacation.
04/28/2017 at 8:56 am in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Tapes, patches, Ferragamos, six packs, desk blotter, sewing box #17222I always pick up golf towels that feature courses (assuming they’re a buck or two). I think of them just like caps – you’re not going to get rich off of them, but a $1 investment for $20-$30 sale is a great pipeline. They’re easy to store, easy to ship.

04/27/2017 at 1:07 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Tapes, patches, Ferragamos, six packs, desk blotter, sewing box #17199Love those Masonic collars. I always pick up Masonic stuff for the right price. I’ve found that anything is highly collectible, but if it can be tied back to a specific person or a specific lodge the prices go up exponentially. And of course, the higher up the ranks you go, the rarer things become.
04/27/2017 at 1:01 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Tapes, patches, Ferragamos, six packs, desk blotter, sewing box #17197I’ve never sold Prada shoes, but I have sold a Prada backpack. Didn’t have any problems, but maybe I was lucky. I just took a lot of pics of the triangle logo plates, stitching, serial numbers, etc. You should be able to tell if they’re real by high quality attention to detail like this. If something looks off like the seams don’t match, logos misaligned, etc, they’re probably fake and will be a problem.

Interesting sales this week:
1976 Smithsonian Institute US Bicentennial Washington Silk Ribbon Bookmark
Neat little item, still wrapped and with the Smithsonian pricetag on it. Bought for less than $1 on the last day of an estate sale and sold for $30.1987 U2 Joshua Tree Album Release Promotional Poster
Got this as well as several other promo posters in a box at an estate sale of a former record exec. Paid probably $3ish per poster and sold this one for $45 best offer.Vintage St. Andrews The Old Course Golf Towel
Found this on the last day of a sale. They were doing “fill up a bag” and I found this while digging around in the basement. It’s used, old, dirty, but that’s why I liked it. Probably paid $0.25 or less for it, sold for $25.NEW SEALED La Mer Blanc de Whitening Masks
This was part of the huge lot of high end perfumes & cosmetics I bought about a year ago. The stuff certainly wasn’t cheap, but it goes with trying to get higher end items in my store. It’s been a nice pipeline that’s almost exhausted now. These specifically I paid about $10 for and they sold for $45. In total, the lot I bought of Chanel, Gucci, and other high end brands i paid about $500 for and have made nearly $1800 thus far.Zildjian Embroidered Adjustable Cap
Thanks to the podcast, buy neat caps all the time now. Never bought them before the show. Paid $1 at a yard sale, sold for $25. Bread & butter.-

04/26/2017 at 12:18 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 307: Getting Ready to Sell While Traveling #17138Yeah, that page is live for me, but when I click on “See Details” do get the code is where there’s an error.
04/26/2017 at 12:10 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 307: Getting Ready to Sell While Traveling #17134Anyone else having problems with their shipping coupon? I got mine in the first week of April but didn’t try to order anything until this week. Now, when I go to the discount page, it says “Currently Not Available. Please Try Again Later”. It’s been like that for a week, so I called eBay and the rep said, “this is strange”.
Wondering if it’s only me or a large segment of store owners.
04/24/2017 at 10:41 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 307: Getting Ready to Sell While Traveling #16985I too have noticed in Q2 after taxes, some “newbs” to eBay come out of the woodwork. While most of them are perfect and pay, there does seem to be a bit of a learning curve especially if they make an offer. I’ve had a few this month make an offer, I accept, and then they say the found it for cheaper or they inspected again and don’t think it’s worth it. I think someone talked about it in the past, but I think if someone makes an offer that there should be some seller protection that they have held money on a CC or PayPal (via temporary authorization) – they do it for sellers that have a case opened, so it’s possible.
