SOLD FOR $108.01
What the heck? If there isn’t any price gouging, what’s the big deal? Some of these items are completely sold out online and in local stores.
I bet they’re next going to ban certain hard to find food items.
Star Trek Picard just aired on CBS/CBS all-access. Fun if you’re a fan of STNG & Voyager. A lot of people hated this season, but Discovery’s getting delayed due to the coronavirus, so this is all the new Star Trek you can get at this time.
Kingdom Season 2 just came out on Netflix. South Korean zombie show with incredible costumes and hats. Especially noted for how fast the zombies run, unlike the slow-moving barely standing zombies on The Walking Dead.
I’ve been enjoying watching Devs on FX/Hulu. The last episode of the miniseries is airing this week. It’s pretty much a mystery show with a science fiction edge. The science fiction is goofy in places, but there’s some good moments in the show.
Westworld Season 3 is back on HBO. It’s not as bad as I thought it would be. Season 2 was meh. Season 1 will probably be the best season of the show, but it’s something to watch.
Better Call Saul season 5 is also currently airing on AMC. I’m still a bigger fan of this show than Breaking Bad. Good season so far.
Curb Your Enthusiasm just aired its 10th season. Really funny season this year. Way better than the 9th season, but I’m also not a fan of Lin Manuel Miranda.
Different carriers each day, and they really don’t want to communicate during this time. We sometimes have 2 or 3 carriers come each day – 1 for letters, 1 for packages, sometimes a second carrier for packages.
I saw on the package pickup website that you could indicate where the packages are – front of house, side of house, etc,.
I was thinking of getting a ring doorbell if I do this. Hmmm…
I love thrifting as much as everyone else here, but thrift stores in general need to remain closed for as long as possible during this time. My local thrifts have been shut for a few weeks. How long will they remain closed? Hopefully for at least 2 months. Even opening up again in May would be extremely optimistic. Encouraging a steady stream of thrifters and bargain shoppers to touch and re-touch questionable used goods in an enclosed space during this time is not the way to go. Thrifts, auctions, estate sales, any place involving crowding and used items needs to stay shut for as long as possible.
I don’t understand how the hype is overblown? They’re setting up a temporary morgue outside of a hospital in Manhattan:
Makeshift morgue for coronavirus victims set up outside NYC hospital
The media hasn’t taken this seriously enough until it went downhill over the past few weeks. During the first few months of the crisis, they were downplaying what was happening in China.
Travel tchotchkes are starting to move. I think a lot of people are bored at home and are planning their summer vacations, or just wishing they were somewhere else. Now’s the time to get them listed!
Also, I’m noticing nostalgic items are starting to move again – postcards, old advertisements. Sales of ephemeral items have started picking up again in the past week.
Anything instructional – books, dvds, audiobooks. People are bored and are making an effort at trying something new.
Thank you very much for the link! I’m going to piggyback on a grocery delivery order with neighbors for early next week. Hopefully chicken will be in stock, will also stock up on more eggs and cheese. That should get us through to the end of April, hopefully. Not sure why they seem to have trouble stocking chicken thighs. I guess everyone’s at home making fried chicken and chicken soup now?
Thank you very much, I appreciate that! š Luckily, I’m going to piggyback in on a grocery delivery order for early next week with neighbors to get in some more eggs, cheese, hopefully some chicken. That should get us through most of April for those sort of foods, if necessary. The current delivery slots are still all taken through April 7th, with no available time slots in sight. I’m not sure when one will open up, might need to be up at midnight one night to see if that’s when they release the slots.
I thrifted a used vintage Star Wars puzzle from the 1970s a few years ago that I didnāt put together and just listed as is. It still sold,āno returns acceptedā and all. No problem. A few potential customers asked me to assemble it to see if it was complete, but I said nah. Still got $30 for it, only paid $2. I mightāve been able to get $50-60 for it if I had put it together and it was complete, but I didnāt feel like it was a good use of my time, especially if it really did turn out to be incomplete.
Soooo happy about this. š Theyāre finally starting to come through.
Hi, thanks, I appreciate the link. Iām fine and consider myself to be the healthiest in the household, so Iāve been stepping it up by bringing the mail into the post office by foot for the past two full weeks. This is now week 3. That is the only place I have been going to daily, and the staff at the post office are behind bulletproof glass (thankful for my previously dangerous neighborhood) so my face to face interactions have not really been face to face. For other lesser, much more infrequent interactions, I stand as far away as possible, tilt my head so Iām not exactly face to face and always wear a mask (yes, I realize thatās weird, but we also have the most cases here and Iām scared). I think Iāve only gone to 2 other places in the past 17 days thatās not my post office.
What is bad with my area is that everyone is turning up sick. I could go get these items at my local store, but I donāt want to risk being in a store at the same time as someone thatās sick, or that had been sick and touched what I want to get but left it without buying it. It feels too risky to go and do normal things at this point. At least when groceries are delivered (contactless at this point, yay) I can sit and wipe them down, or let items in Walmart boxes sit for a bit. Iāve heard that Target online is also running out of stock, but Iāll check on them next.
All prepared for those type of meals, and instapot type soup/bean meals (which we eat a lot of normally because it’s cheap anyway), it’s just that in a few weeks we’re going to run out of cheese & eggs and I’m terrified of how high the case count will be by then. 2 people were confirmed positive that work in a school 3 blocks away from me yesterday, still testing a few others, so I don’t want to risk going to the bodega at the end of my block that’s the closest bodega to where they work in case they were there. I’m assuming that another school a block away from my house will announce a positive case any day now. I feel like all of my local businesses are cut off from me because they’re all dirty and my neighborhood and nearby neighborhoods are all swarming with cases. I wouldn’t ask anyone I know with a vehicle to risk getting food for me, either. Just need to keep an eye on grocery slots more often. š
1st day of the shutdown in NYC. Even though a lot of stores have been closed prior to the shutdown, it was still weird to walk around and see most stores gated. A lot of restaurants and fast food places have also closed, which really surprised me.
On top of the shutdown, it was raining, cloudy and windy on the walk to & from the post office. It sucked. Thankfully, the post office was still open and no one was in it. As long as I can keep sending mail in, I will continue to run. It scares me to leave the house, but it also scares me to not have any income coming in at all for several months. If it gets really bad (it IS really bad here, but really really terrifyingly bad) I’ll look into postal pick-up, but I fear that people will yank my packages no matter what. As for now, I go out in a mask with filter & gloves, and make sure to clean myself and everything when I get back like I am decontaminating from life.
I didn’t know what to expect during the 1st day of the shutdown, but I saw no one walking outside to “enforce” any social distancing rules or anything. I don’t know if it was due to the weather or what, but okay. I was sort of afraid that someone would hassle me for walking around, but it wasn’t like that at all.
I had my worst week ever on Amazon – sales are down 80% from normal. This is normally the time of year I source heavily for Amazon, so oops. I’ll just continue to put my efforts into Ebay, which is thankfully starting to pick up from the slack of Ebay. I’m also adding more to Etsy because I have been getting a lot of likes and people adding my store to their favorites. I’ll probably put it on sale soon to in order to encourage more sales.
I’m going to start running perpetual sales on Ebay for the rest of the year. I think they will go 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%. 25% if it’s really dire. 5% will be the majority of the sales for the year, with a duration of 1 week apiece so I get the sale countdown thing at the end each week.
I’ve also been getting grocery delivery for years since I don’t have a car. Now that everyone has discovered it and is getting grocery delivery, delivery slots are no longer available. All the slots through April 5th have been taken for my main grocery delivery company. Not one is for me. Amazon Whole Foods only gives a 2 day set of slots, always all taken. Another expensive delivery company is completely booked up 5 days out, so those are all taken. I could try instacart, but I don’t know if they’re also all taken or if the food I need will be available for the shoppers to pick up?
I could go to the grocery store, but I can’t take an Uber back with my food so I can’t buy that much at one time and the closest one to me is tiny and expensive with cramped aisles. If I went the grocery route, I would have to make more frequent trips on foot and put myself more at risk by being around others more frequently. As for not taking Uber, it is not a good idea to get into a stranger’s car at this time because you don’t know how often they sanitize. I can go to bodegas, but they’re expensive and risky and you can’t keep a 6 ft apart rule. I have also stopped getting food delivered (that used to be twice a week), so what I have at home is all I have to eat. I’ve been supplementing grocery delivery with Walmart, but a lot of food is running out on there as well. I have food, but I have to start planning NOW to have maybe a month from now that doesn’t put myself at great risk.
I could try venturing to other boroughs of the city, but a lot of the major grocery stores have lines outside the door with bouncers waiting outside to let you in. I don’t know how much food is available, and once again, how would I get the food back if I have to walk across bridges to avoid taking the subway? Ugh.
I’m currently on week 5 of sourcing solely online. The last time I went out to source in public was in one thrift store in mid-February. Even at that point, I went to what I perceived to be the “cleanest” thrift store and hand sanitized frequently. While the sourcing was good, I knew it was risky to be sourcing out in the wild even at that point. After that, I skipped all local estate sales, thrift stores, library sales, auctions, etc,. It was not worth it.
I am continuing to buy stock online because I am getting through it fairly quickly and I just list it in rotation with my backlog. It is nowhere near the amount of stock I would normally buy, but it brings some sense of normalcy to my business.
Our current scheduled shutdown starting tonight is supposed to ease on April 19th. I highly doubt that’s going to happen. In NY, I suspect that we’ll be on shutdown through July in some way or another, at least in NYC. That’s being optimistic. Even if it’s “safe” to start sourcing again mid-summer, I personally will most likely not source again in physical stores or estate sales until the fall.
GOOD. I’m surprised it took that long for MaxSold to come to their senses and cease auctions for the time being. Every time I’ve received an email from them over the past few weeks, I’ve been shaking my head. Even though the items for pick-up are most likely safe, I worry for the staff members herding all the buyers around. Being around strangers in an enclosed space is not safe at this point.
