Buyer opened a case. Tracking shows delivered to Marion, OH but the label was properly printed as going to Sunbury, OH. It’s a 45 mile difference. I printed straight from eBay with no changes. I’ve never had this happen before. Does anyone have experience with this?

Wow, that’s a big mistake!
First, I would contact your buyer saying that the package appears to have been mis-delivered, and you are going to contact the shipping service to see what they can do.
Assuming that you used the post office, you can either call them directly or submit the issue online. To contact them directly, you can call 1-800-275-8777 or call the local office if you know it. Or, to submit online, go to USPS.com and select “Find Missing Mail” under the Help menu. From there, you can select “Start Your Missing Mail Search” and fill out the information.
I haven’t had this issue before, so I can’t tell you what to expect. However, if they cannot get the package back, you will need to make a claim and get your money refunded. And then refund the seller.
If you used a different service than the post office, check out their website and find a similar procedure.

You could also call the main post office in Marian OH and talk to someone local. The town isnt that large so the USPS employees probably all know each other.

Thanks. I will try that. It’s very weird too because the correct street name is “Trigg Hupp Rd,” not a name like “Main” that could easily have a twin somewhere.

when i googled Trigg Hupp Rd, google told me it was acutally “Twigg Hupp Rd” with a W, not R.
could that have messed things up? did the buyer have a typo in their address? -

Buyer says he spoke with the Marion, OH post office and that there were two labels on the package and the Marion, OH people said it was their package. Not only did they lie, I had no purchases from Marion, OH and I always check my boxes for old barcodes, etc. and remove them or marker them out. I have no explanation except perhaps the package was tampered with. It was also an item that not everybody would necessarily want — an 18″ ornate brass scales of justice.

I’m laughing at the irony…Scales of Justice…

So will Marion USPS resend it to the correct location?

You are the one who should be speaking to the post office in Marion OH not the buyer. I wouldn’t trust any thing the buyer has to say.
As far as the double label is concerned its possible although unlikely that the original label was damaged then the sort center put on a new label and got it wrong.
Like Jay said, if the post office is small the carriers will probably remember details about the package and/or the customer who received it. Those memories fade fast though so I would get on the phone with Marion OH asap. Don’t be afraid to ask for the post master.

They told the buyer there is nothing more they can do. I even had a packing slip inside the box showing the rightful recipient. So even if the person who got it was mistaken in receiving it, they should have known better once they opened it. I had to refund all $115. I am so bummed.

If you sent it priority mail, then you have insurance. First class does not, but you could argue that a mistake was made and they should cover it.

It was insured. I have filed a claim. I hope the double-label thing doesn’t keep me from collecting. I have been through every label I have for one week prior and after the purchase and NOTHING was to Marion, OH. Midway through the tracking record, it says it’s en route to Sunbury, OH, so I don’t know how it got diverted.

If this is really bugging you, you could always write to the Marion address to explain the mistake. I’m not sure what the $110 item was, but honest people do exist.

That’s a good idea, Jay, but the exact address was never told me. All I know is it ended up in that town. Another thing I don’t understand is, if it had two labels, it must have had two tracking numbers. And my label would have been the one with the latest date, unless it was tampered with. How does USPS get to show an item delivered properly by them with two tracking numbers? I wish I knew the other tracking number. That information would be helpful I bet.

UPDATE: USPS denied my claim. I was just getting ready to appeal when the buyer contacted me and said the box came to him (3 weeks later) very beaten up, but with no breakage inside. He offered to pay again. I was really grateful for his honesty and that the wrongful recipient had forwarded it on. I sent him a Paypal invoice for the purchase price only, not shipping. The whole thing is still a mystery, but he paid, so there is a happy ending.
