Slow Sales? One reason… I’m mind boggled at all the similar items selling below on the Ebay listing page, many at dirt cheap prices. Yep, we pay fees before and after and still Ebay has to plaster our pages with other seller’s listings. This is old news but still bugs me. Thanks for all your shows Scavenger Life!!!

Thanks again for your shows! I’ve had 3 buyers recently contact me for ‘lost packages’ that were just horribly delayed by 2+ weeks. These were all USPS First Class and all 3 ended up sitting in different hubs for about a week not moving, Detroit, Grand Rapids and Chicago, then finally got delivered. I’m also seeing my local initial PO tracking scans not occurring until 25 -36 hours later even after mailbox pickup notifications. A few recent Priority packages never had tracking scans for days after getting halfway across the country. Anyway, I’m grateful to my PO carriers especially during this risky busy time for them. My mom was a 30+year postal carrier who worked her way up to PostMaster. My husband was a FedEx carrier for 30 years and newly retired (thankfully). Their stories of dog bites, falling on ice, crazy naked people opening doors, women locked out with newborns, the sweet regular customers, the stories are endless. Remember to thank your carriers!
10/27/2019 at 4:50 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 434: Do You Have A Business Destiny? #69621Thanks guys, love your show every single week! My returns have skyrocketed for clothing! What’s going on? All my returns are for Does Not Fit. I’m hovering at 4.7% suddenly despite loads of measurements and item specifics, ave 10 pics, many details in the listing. I have 30 day buyer pays returns. Did the description on mobile go even more incognito? I’m waiting on 5 returns right now and I’m a small seller, it’s an endless flow back into my mailbox. Ug!
Jay, I fondly remember the early 1980s bank interest rates for CDs and money markets 16+% earning. Yes, so true! I was in undergrad and grad school then. My dad was so smart. He said we would NEVER see these rates again. He had me take out the maximum student loans allowed and we invested it ALL. Since my parents had been divorced the court ruled earlier each party pay 1/3 college (dad, mom, myself) so the $ was mostly available as I went to an inexpensive state college (Go Plattsburg SUNY) then got a full scholarship to Syracuse Univ for grad school. I made a boat load of money. I still had to pay off the student loans but my earnings were keep in a separate account with strict instructions not to touch, my profit was huge!!! I am forever grateful to him for his wise advice, wish he was still around so I could give him a hug.
What a great story Jay sharing your journey with stuttering. I hope this reaches so many. I was 26 year Speech Language Pathologist who left the field due to illness and found Ebay as a second career. I’m always naturally aware of subtle speech patterns. I love how unique each person’s speech is with dialect, rate, volume and of course content. Speech is like a fingerprint really, so very uniquely personal. After grad school back in the 80s I was offered full funding for a PhD degree in the area of stuttering research with Dr Conture at Syracuse University, totally free! However the field of stuttering/ dysfluencies was then, and still remains so mysterious, a combination of mostly genetic plus learned avoidance patterns. After a week of tears and indecision I turned down the offer as my interests were in other areas. Some individuals with stuttering do greatly benefit from professional training and techniques resulting in near or full fluency. However, I suspect at least 60% remain challenged with lifelong stuttering despite all efforts, cost and time. I’m always shocked that well meaning but uniformed listeners will comment on someone’s stuttering when they would never speak out on a scar, physical disability or weight problem. Jay thanks again for sharing yourself so publicly, bravely and honestly. Your (J & R) podcasts are always valuable, entertaining and interesting and remain my #1 favorite out of the never ending troupe of resellers filling the air.

Despite loads of social media and CL ads, signs everywhere, it was a pretty terrible outcome and soooo much work. We made $187 but this took hours and hours. Some furniture like painted rocking chairs going for $10, buyers bartering from .50 cents to a quarter. Plus a completely unexpected early rain shower likely made many yard salers stay home. Now we have tons of junk in the garage to figure out. Never ever again, I’d rather get poison ivy, a root canal and a migraine all at once!

06/25/2018 at 10:41 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 366: How To Run A Small, Local Business #43408Hi there, faithful listener but rarely post. My sales are down 47% for the year, mostly pre-owned clothing. I feel sure this is due to 1) buyers, especially younger buyers, are now shopping more on Poshmark and consider Ebay “old fashioned” and 2) prices on both platforms are falling to rock bottom given so many new sellers.
In response to Jay’s question, does Ebay consider small sellers like us? Minimally, in my opinion. 81.5% of items sold on Ebay are NEW. Also, look at Ebay’s endless massive $$$ aquisitions worldwide-India, Asia which all seem to cater to NEW items. We are literally a drop in the bucket, just a drop, so raising fees, dropping discounts, expecting more, ending seller protection simply benefits Ebay.04/16/2018 at 9:45 am in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 355: We Catch Up w/ Maria & Ryan from Passport Vintage Austin, TX #37740Ah, we just returned from a fabulous Austin week of vacation. Wish we heard this before, will have to check out Maria & Ryan’s place next time. Austin so so great, love the phrase there ‘Keep Austin Weird’. Since our airline was so crazy stingy on luggage now we didn’t hit any thrift stores unfortunately. Fun to hear about Etsy and brick & mortar, good luck on your business and growth!
08/10/2017 at 4:38 pm in reply to: What Sells On eBay: Models, Pipe Stand, LL Bean shirt, Teva sandals, & a couple Facebook Marketplace sales #21638Syroco Plastics was also manufactured in my hometown of Baldwinsville NY in a hamlet called VanBuren, just 15 minutes from Syracuse NY. We were surrounded by the stuff in the 70s- wall art, parson’s tables, ice buckets, dishes.
I’ve never added to the what sold- here are just a few of the items sold this week. I’m a part time seller. Prices do not include shipping
-Asolo Hiking H2O waist fanny pack $28.99 to Budapest Hungary
-Ralph Lauren queen floral duvet, could not ID the exact pattern despite searching $69.99
-Red Wing Tampico mid century 4 dinner plates $39.99
-2 ‘King Size’ brand plaid shirts, men’s BIG sizes 8XL and 9XL to the same buyer, for $21.99 each, not a huge sale but hard to find sizes.
-Vintage Christian Dior pink wool coat- $100 to a NYC design firm
-Max Mara linen blazer-$35.99, Brooks Brothers gold button ladies blazer $39.99, Valentino Tweed ladies blazer $45.99I went to Ebay Open, first time for me. I am totally not a Vegas fan, not a gambler or drinker. My husband was excited to hang at the sports areas at various casinos so we had a car. The best part for me were non-Ebay adventures- out to Red Rock park- so amazing, finding a weird exclusive pricy village called Blue Diamond, wandering the streets around ULV. Last day we escaped to Red Rock Casino for a buffet and just hung for 2 hours playing cheap Keno waiting for our red eye flight. Great people watching but kind of sad too. Needless to say- so hot, 108 on Thursday.
Ebay Open- I might consider going again, it was very motivating, just super huge & hectic. It’s a long trip from NH. Absolutely mind boggling amazing the $$$ Ebay puts into Ebay Open, stunning jumbo screens, endless food, massive square footage of conference spaces. I met loads of great people plus we had a group from our local NH meetup. Not so thrilled with our MGM room but the hotel price was OK, many many many small flaws daily, the glitz is all in the public areas.
WHAT I LEARNED FROM EBAY OPEN- actually nothing new I did not hear already, Ebay Radio really does do great updates. Explore the Growth tab on the Seller Hub, Ebay will be expanding this data significantly very soon. 80% of Ebay listings are NEW items. Use sales or promotions, all retail does, buyers expect it. The social media hash tag advanced suggestions were way over my head. Use plain white, black or perhaps gray backgrounds for best search. Use all your tax deductions, don’t be scared if they are legal & acceptable. Change my Ebay fees to credit card vs PayPal withdrawal to earn points (I’ve been procrastinating, like throwing $ away).Griff’s photo sessions are packed, get there early or you will be standing or shut out.
I encourage you to go at least once to Ebay Open, it really is a BIG experience!Jay, are you asking about the PayPal comment just now?
Air Conditioning- Sleeping porch sounds absolutely wonderful! If you have an open concept home and want a cheaper a/c alternative, consider a split A/C (and secondary heat option too) wall mount system. Our brand is Daikin, it cools the entire approx 1600sq/ft first floor when doors are open. The dehumidifier works almost as well for cooling as the a/c without the fan sound. We love it.
Returns after case closed- The buyer can open a PayPal dispute case. PayPal will still require ( or force) a refund up to 180 days later if the buyer can show tracking that the item was delivered regardless of what Ebay decides. PayPal’s response- if the buyer does not want it they can return it.
04/17/2017 at 5:06 pm in reply to: Scavenger Life Episode 306: We Love Flea Markets and Craigslist #16718Brimfield Fair in Brimfield MA is just over 2 hours from me here in NH, coming up in early May then again in July & Sept. It’s a great day, so huge, so much stuff. I love seeing all the mid century items, beautifully staged vintage booths and superb people watching! Yes, there are items to be found for resellers, I’ve picked up many small items simply because I didn’t want to carry big things. You can hire porters to haul your big purchases to your vehicle. Just watch for rainy days or the morning after a big rainstorm otherwise it’s a muddy mess, bring spare footwear. Be ready to walk & walk & walk. We even took a nap in the back field before. As Ryanne says, be prepared- food, water, sunglasses. You may even see Lara Spencer & Flea Market Flip filming, I did. My favorite part is just taking lots of photos. I can’t wait to go soon!!!
