I responded immediately via message to the buyer and apologized for the delay and asked that they please allow for more time. I am just trying to utilize the system for the most days possible though. The order was for $300+.
I ended up listing them on Mercari because they allow the sale of used cosmetics. I put some very competitive prices on them and sold a couple already.
To be safe, I think I will avoid selling used perfume on eBay. I have sold new perfume without any issues obviously.
Unfortunately, I cannot get much back by reselling it. Maybe $20. The majority of the value came from the item being brand new and sealed in the original packaging. The item sold for $125 plus shipping, so they got $62.50 back.
Just thought I would give an update:
I tested the walkman extensively and it works perfectly. My suspicions about not getting the original headphones back was correct. Through a series of messages, the buyer admitted to sending back the wrong headphones. They opened the item, took the new headphones, and sent back their old broken headphones. I have since issued a 50% refund and withheld the original shipping cost.
I have been selling full time for 2 years now and this is the 3rd time someone has made a scam attempt. I wish I could recoup the full value of the item, but at least I got 50% back.
Thanks for the help everyone!
Fortunately, this is my first removal in a couple of years. I try to stay on top of policies and VeROs, because I never want to get to a place where I am on thin ice. I have spoken to 5 reps and they are not budging at all on their decision. So I think I just have to move forward and continue to be cautious.
Thanks for the reply Jay! It appears it will cost me about $19 a month to get the service, if I am reading it correctly. I will most likely get the service. Losing 700 listings would be devastating.
That would be ideal if they don’t fight it, but I just want to prepare for the worst case scenario. Thanks again!
Okay, I will fight it then. Thanks again for the replies, I really appreciate it. I will post an update once everything is done.
Hey Jay, thanks for the reply. I don’t have any defects at all. My concern is that if I don’t refund the original shipping cost, the buyer will open a case. If they decide in favor of the buyer, it would count against me right? Or am I protected because of being a top rated seller with 30 day free returns?
It is obvious to me that the buyer is abusing the return policy, I just have to get eBay to side with me, which is the hard part.
Thanks for the reply Sonia.
I am worried if fighting this could result in a defect. It doesn’t help either that eBay customer support is only available through email.

I totally agree. That is how I have operated for the past 2 years. The only thing that is making me consider opening an unpaid item case is that there seems to be an influx of flakey buyers or people not taking offers seriously. I have no data to support this, other than the transactions from my store.
If I don’t open a case, this person is going to continue doing the same thing.
I wish so badly that eBay would tie payments and offers together like Mercari does. If I send an offer on Mercari and the seller accepts it, the payment is processed immediately.

I understand your points and think they are valid. I was trying to be honest and pay what I thought was the right price tag, because I wanted it. I could have approached them without the tag as well in hopes it would have been priced lower, which would have been unethical.
For being a thrift store and the area where I live, I think $20 was an above average price for the coat. At $43, it won’t sell until there is a 50% off sale. When it comes to researching pricing and achieving maximum profit, theres a fine line of reasonable and unreasonable pricing that thrift stores walk. I think sometimes stores forget that they do not offer any guarantee or return policy on their items. A quick eBay search does not equal a cash final sale type of transaction.
It is what it is, I have moved on and someone else will hopefully get a deal on the coat. The money to be made wasn’t that significant, it was just the principal of it all. There is a layer to the story that I can’t convey in writing on how the whole interaction went down. I was polite and let go of the issue quickly, whereas the manager seemed to have it out against me for no reason. It just sucked to put it short.
Thanks for the responses. I have a store subscription and when I look at my dashboard my transaction defect rate, late shipment rate, and cases closed without resolution are all 0%. My tracking uploaded on time is 100% as well. Currently my return rate is 2.57% (12 out of 467 transactions). I believe I am evaluated on a quarterly basis because of my volume (400+ transactions).
I guess the part I am kind of confused about is the service metrics. If I go to my Seller Hub and then select Performance, on the left hand side, there is another filter called “Service Metrics”. This breaks down the returns associated from “Item Not As Described” and “Item Not Received”. I thought for some reason, this section would better explain how I am evaluated or if there was a problem, but it all it really does is show me returns associated to categories and how I rank against my peers. I guess this rank determines if there really is a problem and if I will be charged higher fees.
I think I found my answer to this all though. One INAD isn’t really a big deal, eBay views it as the same thing as a return due to being “defective”, they all fall underneath the INAD category. You just can’t have too many of them in one category. Fortunately I don’t really have many at all and I am just over thinking it all.
Thanks again everyone for responses!
Welp, I feel pretty silly, but I got an answer. The symbol belongs to Madonna University in Michigan. I emailed Pangborn directly and they responded pretty quick. The funny thing is, my wife went to college there. I showed her the logo and she knew instantly what it was. I wasted 2 hours researching this logo today when the answer was right in front of my face the whole time. Lol
Oh well, Pangborn’s customer service is top notch though!
I have a Worthpoint subscription and didn’t find anything that matches unfortunately. I checked Terapeak as well. I was hoping someone here could identify the M with a flame symbol from personal knowledge.
Thank you for the response though!
