I visited a great family-run estate sale on Saturday. I was the first person to find a small table of good cameras priced at $5 – 10 each so I filled a bag. I also picked up an armful of hats and a computer so it was one of my best scores in a while.
I just noticed my seller limits on the seller dashboard. I presume “B” is for billion. This is certainly a lofty goal:

Hope everyone has a great week!
I’m excited for you :- going full time on eBay. I hope you’ll give us updates on your progress and what challenges arise.

I saw photos of booths at couple of different conferences on / around IPO day so some of those must have been from the conference you were at. I’ve worked here just over 3 years. In the tech world that’s considered a a fairly long time though I’m not a very early employee. I was granted a very generous number of options (as it turns out). I’ve had options at 4 previous employers and none of those amounted to anything so I considered these options to be valueless up until a month or two ago when I heard about the IPO. Anything I make from my stock is just an unexpected bonus.

Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.62%
Hats sold this week: 29 (61% of sales) worth $508.67 (51% of sales $)I took a day off work last week and focused mainly on eBay which helped boost my number of listings for the week. Sales were plentiful but mainly cheaper items which kept the sales $ down.
As I mentioned last week, the company I worked for ended up going public on the New York Stock Exchange last Thursday. It was a great day and gave my financial situation a boost – but to the theme of the podcast – I won’t consider that disposable income. I’ll treat that with care like the rest of my income.
Hope everyone has a great week!
As far as I know, Managed Payments don’t yet work with GSP either. That’s a deal-breaker for me.
I’m late to the party but here are my numbers for the week:
Total Items in Store: 2860
Items Sold: 35
Total Sales: $752
Cost of Items Sold: $93
Average Price Sold: $21.47

Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 212
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 162
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.22%
Hats sold this week: 22 (62% of sales) worth $385.19 (51% of sales $)This was a pretty typical week, sales-wise. I didn’t have any high value sales so that kept my overall number lower than it’s been recently. No complaints though.
I’m still lagging slightly behind last year. I’m putting as much time as I have available into my ebay biz so I don’t see things changing much unless I try and source different items online.
The company I work at for my day job is having their IPO tomorrow so that’s pretty exciting. I’ve been there several years and I got a lot of cheaply-priced options when I joined. We’re all supposed to try and be in the office by 6:15am (pacific time) to see the opening bell being rung at the New York Stock Exchange by my company.
I haven’t had a chance to listened to the show yet but here are my numbers:
Total Items in Store: 2822
Items Sold: 39
Total Sales: $1003
Cost of Items Sold: $105
Average Price Sold: $25.72
Average Cost of Item: $2.71
Highest Price Item Sold: $99.95 Go Video Recorder Burner DVD VCR MP3 Combo Player
Number of items listed this week: 63
YTD Sales: $11291
YTD sales compared to this time last year: -6%
Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 376
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 210
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 117
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.38%
Hats sold this week: 28 (71% of sales) worth $491.75 (49% of sales $)Sales were pretty good for me. As usual it was busy early in the week and got quiet on the weekend.
My sales for the month of March were just ahead of this time last year which was good since I was below in February.
Nothing very interesting to report this week other than I reinstalled the Android ebay app and got a different version to the one I had previously. Apparently I agree to be a beta tester at some point and I think I was seeing a new version of the photos management/uploading functionality. It was much faster but it was a little buggy. I think I have the regular version of the app again now.
@SilverFoxFinds – yes, if the item doesn’t sell and it’s renewed next month it will count against 1000 free listings. So, if you have 1070 listings and nothing sells and you don’t end any you will get charged $7 (70 * 10c) If you list 10 new items today and nothing sells for a month you’ll end up paying $8 (80 x 10c) in insertion fees by this time next month.
I’m in the middle of the store donut hole. I have 2700 listings and currenlty pay $170/month in extra insertion fees each month which is kinda depressing. Not sure why it feels better to pay store fees than insertion fees but it does.
That was an interesting update @SpartyQ
In regard to the impact of not listing, I think there’s enough anecdotal evidence out there to strongly suggest a correlation between listing and sales. eBay likes stores with activity. When you list new items you’ll get activity from people looking at (and hopefully buying) some of those items. When eBay sees this activity it seems to give your whole store a bump and you’re likely to see some sales of your older items too.
Hi R&J – thanks for the podcast!
Here are my numbers for the week:
Total Items in Store: 2798

Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 367
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 248
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 140
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1%
Hats sold this week: 21 (75% of sales) worth $367.17 (48% of sales $)Another weird change in sales activity in my store. From 46 sales last week to 28 sales this week for no particular reason. My average sale value was pretty close to last week even though it felt like I sold more high-value things last week. (My total sales $ fell from $1278 last week to $754 this week). I’m still perfectly happy with my overall sales though I’d love more weeks like last week if the eBay gods obliged.
I’m old enough to have seen several boom bust cycles. My very first stock purchase was the day after Black Monday in 1987 when the stock market tumbled around the world. I rode the dot com boom and bust and was forced to freelance when the San Francisco tech sector all but dried up and I grinded through years of a soul-sucking job at an insurance company through the 2008 recession years. While the stock market could take a tumble I dont feel any building pressure for a major economic collapse right now. I hope I’m right especially a I’m hopefully less than 18 months away from a planned early retirement.
Wishing every a profitable week on eBay!
I had the same experience as Sharyn. A few weeks ago the Fedex labels started coming out like regular USPS-sized labels. I don’t know if the feature is in beta and perhaps not visible to everyone.
There is a workaround that I still use for international (not GSP) labels. This would work for half-page Fedex labels too if you’re still seeing them. When the label appears on the screen, click the link to open the label window then download and open the label in adobe reader, use the edit / “take a snapshot” command to select the area you want to print and then when you print it will just print the selected area. (You’ll probably have to correct the label size and possible switch between portrait and landscape in the print dialog windwos)
I did a quick check and found my listings that have caps for keywords in the title appear in Google’s regular search results and Google Shopping. Not all my listings appear in Google Shopping but I didn’t discern a pattern based on the limited searching that I did.
I generally put my main keywords in caps. I have no compelling reason for doing that other than I think that those words will stand out when skimming down a page of similar items.
Thanks for the show. I’ll admit I had to rewind and listen to parts a second time as I took a little snooze on the way to my day job while I was listening. (Fortunately I ride a bus to work and dont drive :).
Here are my numbers:
Total Items in Store: 2760
Items Sold: 46
Total Sales: $1278
Cost of Items Sold: $169
Average Price Sold: $27.78
Average Cost of Item: $3.68
Highest Price Item Sold: $119.95 Canon PowerShot SX620 HS
Number of items listed this week: 57
YTD Sales: $9534
YTD sales compared to this time last year: -3%
Average age of items in store (in days since listing): 373
Average number of days between listing and selling this week: 115
Median age of sales (in days, between listing and selling): 28
Sell-through rate (for the week): 1.67%
Hats sold this week: 21 (45% of sales count) – $361.02 (28% of sales value)I had a great week – the best for 5 months. I have to look back to October last year to find a week with higher sales. This was mainly due to selling a bunch of higher-priced items that I’d scavenged recently. (The median selling age above indicates that I sold a lot of recently-listed items.) Apart from the camera mentioned above, I also sold a set of flatware for $100 and a slide rule for $80.
On your podcast topic, I think it’s a fine line between FOMO and jealously. The best example of FOMO that I can think of recently is the craziness around bitcoin towards the end of last year. Everyone was talking about it and people were jumping into due to FOMO. I remember having to tell my daughter to be careful about the hype.
R&J – I hope you have a much better week sales-wise this week!
Thanks so much for identifying this piece Hausfrau. That helps a lot. Originally I thought maybe it was a sconce or something but the weight of the piece makes perfect sense as a table lamp. It would be fun to see it restored but even as a rusty piece of iron I like this a lot as a decorative piece. Thanks to both of you for responding.
Thanks Jay! I googled Art Nouveau and that definitely seems to fit this piece. That’s very helpful. I hadn’t considered that it might have had a paper backing but that certainly seems possible based on what i can see on the reverse.
