2024 projected total sales $76,583.00I got a lot accomplished this week. I put a bunch of listed items into inventory. I got my son to clean 20 pair of shoes, and my daughter photographed 14 pair. I’ve kept plugging along on creating draft listings and I’m still over 130 ready for photos. I even got some electronics testing done on some cameras. It always astounds me when people sell video cameras with recorded media still in the bag. One of them was likely a storage cleanout, but still surprising. This one had a church play and just random vids of the family on it. There’s no way I could get this back to the family so I just toss it after testing the camera’s playback/record functions.
Saturday was a weird day for me. I had BIG plans to get stuff done since we had no baseball games for once. I did yard sales early just before 8 with my wife. She was tired (growing a baby is HARD work) so I dropped her off back at home for a nap at 9 and I went back out by myself. After yard sales I took my wife out to lunch – she had been napping all that time until I got home at 12:30. When we got back home I ended up taking a nap until almost 6!
So at the end of the day all I accomplished was yard sales. No yard work, no organizing work, nothing. I made up for it on Sunday though!
This week so far I am firing on all cylinders. Every day I’m creating drafts, photographing 5-8 items, my son is cleaning shoes, and I’m putting at least 5 items into inventory each day. I’m also ending/sell similar at least 30 items a day.

So my profit is much higher on this through a series of events. I sold this a few weeks ago. The buyer immediately opened a return and shipped back same day. Said his wife didn’t like it like he thought she would. I had a bad feeling about this return due to the high value and rarity of the remote. When I got it back I didn’t see the remote. I withheld shipping costs and reduced the return by the lost value of not having the remote. I messaged the buyer and said I would happily refund the rest if they returned the remote. They said it was in the box wrapped up in bubble wrap. Sure enough, there it was in a wad of big bubble wrap. It was so light that I didn’t feel the weight and in so many layers I couldn’t see the remote. WHOOPS!!!
I profusely apologized and talked to ebay to try and get the refund fixed. The CSR appreciated my honesty, but they have no mechanism to amend the refund. They made a note in the system to auto approve a customer appeal and had me coach the buyer to appeal the partial refund. It went smoothly and the customer got all their money back including shipping. None of it came out of my pocket so I made an extra $40 on this item.

Nothing earth shattering in the yard sales this past weekend. Yesterday thought I bought WAY too much stuff I did NOT need on whatnot.
So one of the youtubers I follow had a blowout clearout sale on whatnot yesterday. Years ago they did a huge buyout of an entire warehouse of video game stuff. They had a ton of accessories and controllers they knew they’d never get rid of and didn’t fit their current profit margin model, so they wanted the space back for highter dollar inventory. I normally don’t pay attention to their whatnots because people typically WAY overpay on every item. I’m talking at or well above ebay averages. It’s crazy! This one started as I started my lunch break so I figured what the hay – I’ll watch a few minutes while I eat. Things escalated from there after I won a lot I just threw a bid on fully expecting to lose.
This auction they were selling of lots of vintage video game controllers. They’d throw 8-10 controllers or accessories in a box and run it. I ended up buying 16 lots! I paid an average of $47 a box for a total of $756. I’ll make about $1500 profit once everything sells. Not my normal margins, but this is some COOL STUFF I’ve never been able to handle before. Even though I make serious money in this business, it is still just a hobby for fun at heart so I want to sell and play with the fun stuff. In many cases there was one item in the box worth what I paid for the whole box.
I like these youtubers, but I’d be lying if I wasn’t thoroughly entertained at the constrained disappointment they choked back at what alot of items sold for in this auction. They asked for the resellers to show up and they got what they asked for. LOL!

I’ll keep chipping away at listings and inventory storage in the spare minutes of my days until my schedule clears up a bit. I’m still creating listings. Even with 30 listings last week I still have a draft bank of 150 items ready for photos.I do a lot of listing while sitting in my van on breaks/lunch. Sometimes I bring items into my office to list or photograph if they are smalls. I have 9 bins of listed items that need moved into the inventory system. And then I have 6 bins of the 150 draft bank items that will follow shortly behind.
My older kids are working to finish up their school this month and baseball will wrap up early in June. Then they’ll be free to help me more and clear out that backlog. They’ve expressed interest in doing another $10 ebay challenge this summer.
Or maybe they’ll just play video games all day. It remains to be seen.

This one is very nice and has the missile so I’ll be pricing at $200.
Another one I pulled out but isn’t worth a ton is a G1 Scattershot. Anytime you find a G1 in the wild is a great day! He…uhhh….well…. he has a “special” transforming feature that he was setting in when I pulled him out of the box.
Bonus – there is a button you can press where that “part” explodes open. Oh boy…
I got a couple neat things at yard sales this weekend. I didn’t do my full loop though due to time constraints.
at a church yard sale I got a small box full of Thomas the Train engines. These can be big money for the older wooden ones. I’ve done an initial run through and there are 5 worth $15-20 each. Then a lot of lesser value wooden ones. Then a pile of trackmaster and minis.
At the same sale I got the old pager system from their nursery. It sells for $250 on ebay. Paid $5.
At another yard sale I got a box full of transformers toys for $1 each. Google lens makes identifying these soooo much easier! At the same sale I picked up a nice vintage Silver dinnerware collection for $20. Sold comps were in the $200-300 range. I’ve sold silver sets before – they can take a while to get the big bucks.
It’s because of ebay that when my wife said “I want this” I was able to just throw it on a cart without having to crunch a budget. That’s why I do this.
$100 total for both. I also bought a tub of Xbox controllers for $10 that will MORE than cover the entire purchase. That was a good price for him untested, and a great price for me that I didn’t even need to consider negotiating.

2024 projected total sales $78,534.44Spent most of my free time gardening with the family this week. We completely redid the flower gardens – adding a fountain, some ponds as well as all new plants. It was quite the undertaking!
The fountain is pretty sweet!
I put in a pond along with a small waterfall feeder pond above it. The filter discharge in the bigger pond is routed up to the waterfall feeder. Both ponds will get rimmed with slate this week. It will look like the tree fountain is feeding the ponds.
It was raining all morning Saturday so yard sales were…actually quite good! There were plenty of sales that were in the garage or under pop up shelters. I scored some really cool stuff. The highlight was a Sega Dreamcast and a Sega Saturn VIA the power of the ask. The rule I go by is if I see signs of cool stuff, I ask if there is more cool stuff. For example, if I see a video game I’ll ask if they have the system too. You’d be surprised how many times this results in a bin of more stuff coming out. In this case I overheard another buyer buying some loose dreamcast game case art. After he left I asked the owner if he had any more video game stuff. That’s when he brought down the systems. The dreamcast came with a new sealed VMU, which is $80-100 itself. I love that I can get cool toys & electronics at yard sales for cheap. Toys and electronics rarely show up at thrift stores now and if they do, they are priced to the moon.
Still no new listings added to ebay but my draft bank is up over 140. I’ll be busy most of May but then things will calm down a bit. And of course I’m looking forward to that 4 weeks of paid paternity leave later this summer. I’m quite surprised that even without new listing activity I had the best April ever by a WIDE margin outside April 2020. April 2020 is such a WILD outlier, anything that wasn’t bolted down was selling for top dollar!
I’m 4 days into the current week and I’ve started getting stuff in inventory and photographing/listing. Baby steps – just a couple items a day put into inventory and photographed.
Regarding the rest of the premium hoarder stuff I haven’t secured, I haven’t heard anything from the owner. Last I heard the estate consignor still hadn’t done the auction on all the outrageous hardgoods that I shared on here.
I’m kind of out of room right now so I’m not in any hurry. I’ve adopted the position that I will wait for them to reach out to me. I may just cherry pick once the time comes. I’m pretty confident I already have the best stuff, so if nothing else comes from it I can live with that.
Premium Hoarder update:
Sold 7 items for $473.
You can do some pretty amazing stuff with the consumer ones, but you do need to get into the $2k+ range to do the REALLY cool stuff. I did some trials just using an FDM printer to do casting patterns but it doesn’t work well with cast steels and will contaminate alloy steels. The resolution is bad and the build times are SLOW. It works pretty darn good for casting aluminum or bronze in a home foundry.

For finished solid products there are many manufacturers starting to use printer farms to make parts.
rapid prototyping jigs, tool holders, molds, you name it.
The Toyota plant near me has a huge room full of consumer grade FDM printers that they keep running constantly for production support.3d metal printing is in its infancy. Aerospace is going all in on 3d printing metal. The government is throwing a lot of money at gearing up additive to support legacy parts manufacturing for DOD.
We’re also in the running for an additive/subtractive machine that uses a direct laser deposition process to build up layers of metal and then machine it to final size. Again, aerospace is heavy into this technology. It’s another million plus machine. My colleague at work is now on the ASTM committee for additive metal technologies and will get to help shape the standards going forward.
I’ve been invited to join the American Foundry Society additive technology committee.
